THE MARINER

Soft blew the air, and smooth flowed the tide
And blue the heav'n' in its mirror smiled
The white sale trembling and expanding wide,
The busy sailor at anchor toil'd.
The last dread moment comes, the sail or youth
Hides the big drop and smile amid his pain.
Soothes his sad bride and vows eternal truth
"Farewell, farewell, farewell," he crys (sic), "we soon shall meet again."

Eve yields to night, the breeze of wintry gales
In one vast head of the seas and shores repose
He turns his aching eyes, his spirits fail,
The chill tear falls, sad to the deck he goes
The storm of midnight swells, the sails are furled
Deep sounds the lead, but sounds alas in vain,
Then o'er the waves, the wretched bark is hurled,
"Farewell, farewell, farewell," he crys, "we ne'er shall meet again."

Oh! what avails the seaman's toiling care?
The straining cords are burst, the masts are riv'n,
Sad sounds of terror groan along the air,
Then, from afar, the bark on rock was driv'n;
Fierce o'er the wreck, the whelming waters passed,
The helpless crew sunk in the roaring main.
Henry's faint accents trembled in the blast,
"Farewell, farewell, farewell, my love, we ne'er shall meet again."
