Subject: New Mudcat room for Sundays
From: Steve in Idaho
Date: 21 Jan 02 - 11:36 AM

OK - I went to Paltalk and found out why we don't have a password protected room that holds more folks - $50.00 a month and the limit there is 25! More than I am ready to pay. I figured if it was $15.00 or under I'd do it just to have the space. Maybe when I win the lottery.

So I made a new room. Liz is correct in that the Admins can, and will, bounce trouble makers. I called it "Norton1's Live Acoustic Music." Pretty original eh? I also put a paragraph in about what type of music we'll take, made it G rated for the kids and family who would come to listen, and am going to be in need of a couple of Admins who are willing to be there on Sundays from 11 - 3 at a minimum.

The name is only to get the room as I can amend anything. I had to go through the process in order to find out the costs and what it is all about. They have an extensive list of rules and things - and you know what a hassle it can be to wend your way through it to simply reinstall - so this is the starting place. I was reluctant to name the room "The Mudcat" as I don't have the authority to use that name. Maybe one of the Joe Clones or Max could give us some direction on this aspect.

So please give me some feedback about what you'd like this room to be and what name you want for it. I'll do the modifying and take down names for Admins. Anything I've forgotten - well let me know.

Steve

Nice one Steve, hope to be in the "room" next week!
And thanks for all your efforts - it's a pleasure to be able to play- and listen to- other 'catters around the globe.

Oops - forgot to offer any feedback! I like the format the way it is - the putting up of hands, and one "in the chair" running the circle.

I'd be glad to help with the admin' but can't always guarantee being here at the right time.

Good job Steve. Doing what is reasonable and explaining the basis for it make for good outcomes. Hope it goes well. Might wander in when I can.

Thanks Chris - I'll take the volunteer for admin and say "Thanks." Mary in Kentucky is also going to be involved. As we get more folks perhaps we could meet in "The Snug" and go over some of the basics so we are all operating on the same principle.

Steve - room names... When I started the Hearme room (not the original which was started by Max as a result of a suggestion from JAB but the 1st workable music room we had - no timeouts, etc.) , I was worried about using the Mudcat name and did not use it but Aine took over later and the name became the "Mudcat Song Circle".

When it became clear that Hearme were no longer interested in providing the free rooms I got involved again and we moved onto Paltalk. I used the name that Aine had established in Hearme. This name is up for grabs - maybe you would like to change to the original name for a Mudcat Paltalk room.

Just, would you please ALWAYS give the room name and a link, when you start a thread announcing it's open? And name the announcement thread with some thought to the time it may be open? It's so frustrating to open threads titled "OPEN NOW" and find it's chat about what was on 3 hours ago! Or to open one that IS on "NOW" but no way to find it!

Re-usable thread copy sitting on the desktop, maybe, including link in HTML coding, to make this simpler for the admins?

Norton, I'd be happy to help out with the admin-ing as and when I can. Won't be able to do next Sunday as I'll be down in deepest darkest Yorkshire for a singing weekend.

Susan - I could certainly start doing that. Something like:

Subject: Paltalk Song Room Open -- Then in the text area -- Room name is: Mudcat Song Circle and it is open on Paltalk at 11 o'clock Mountain Time 20 January 2002.

Would that do it?

There really isn't enough room in the subject line to do much more. And we have set a standard time of 11 o'clock Mountain Time on Sundays for now. Someone else can do the link business.

Scott - you're hired. I'll get more info out to those who want to help as the week goes on. Thanks -

People used to enter the date in the thread title, and sometimes the time...

SUNDAY SNUG 20-JAN-02 1-3 EST

That would fit I think. It's Mudcat date-style and time zone, so people can compare it to the forum date/time.

Maybe?

Steve, that sounds good. I did that sometimes with the Mudcat Concert Room and it worked fine. Unfortunately, I generally work Sundays (or gig), and have found that by the time I get home and finish supper that things have generally pooped out. I do hope to be able to join in sometimes.

Whoo hoo!!!

Thanks Norton1 - not only a good guy but a biker as well!!!

I'm happy to be an admin too, if you want another Brit to open up at 6.00pm GMT

Might not be able to do it next Sunday though, off to Cader Idris and a shopping village!

Susan - That would be perfect and I can do that. I'll put the time in as Mudcat time - two hours earlier than mine - and that will give a reference for everyone. Great idea and thanks for the follow through!!

Miz Liz - You're hired also! It sounds like the UK contingent is off soewhere this Sunday but we'll get by just fine and keep you all in our thoughts. I am doing something special this Sunday so regretably you'll miss it - :-) I've been a biker since 1967 - owned a ton of Harleys - and I wasn't always a good guy - So Thank You for the compliment!!

Jock Morris you are also hired. That gives us four admins for now and we may increase that as we see how time frames and duties allow.

Dwditty and Bigchuck - always a pleasure and we'll see you both around at some point in time.

Great Steve-- I'll come in and listen when I can, and maybe try out a sound check since our jam pals offered a February CatConcert-- actually we would lead a gospel singalong/playalong. But I never did the sound check! *G*

Oh Liz - I bought my first Harley in 1967, a 1949 Panhead, for $25 - it was running and leaking oil. For an additional $25 I got a 1950 Harley for parts (complete bike in pieces). I've owned most all of them - a 1958 Panhead, a 1972 Shovelhead, a couple of older versions (1946 and a 1947 Knucklehead), a 1992 Evo that Janet now rides, and the one in the photo is a 2001 Night Train (my Birthday present for living longer than I should have). I think there were a couple more but those stick out in my memory.

I was into the British bikes for a cuple of years, still owned Harleys, but had a couple of Triumphs and the Norton. Of all the bikes I've owned the Norton was the most challenging to build and scary to ride. It was a sweet little Cafe Bike that had over 90 Horsepower - we went nuts building the motor - and it would fly. But my first love has always been Harleys. I've a photo of me on my Uncle Pete's 1948 Harley when I was about 8-9 years old.

Just plain fun -

Steve

OK - I've named the room the Mudcat Song Circle. Below is the greeting that each new person who comes into the group will see - let me know what needs to be added or deleted. Thanks all - -

Welcome to the group! This is a "G" rated room so please conduct yourselves appropriately. This is a Folk focused group but we welcome most live music. If you wish to sing, play, or a combination of the two simply raise your hand. No Mic jumping, no rude or demeaning comments about the performers, no backtracks, no recordings, no kareoke, no rap or rock and roll, and keep it live!!

Steve, as the room is a Mudcat room, I feel that "Folk" should be changed to "Folk and Blues".

Just a point of order: how "G" is "G"?

Not that I'm planning to sing "The Sexual Life of the Camel" or anything, but f'rinstance, Barrett's Privateers with its "goddamn them all" and There Were Were Roses with "Oh, Christ, it's young O'Malley they've taken from his door" are among my repertoire. I don't sing a lot of songs with profanity in them, and I can't think of any raunchy ones either (I don't actually do "Camel"); but if a song I like (such as these ones) has profanity that to me isn't unwarranted or out of place, I sing it.

Not a complaint or criticism by any means, mind you; I just don't want to perform material like these examples if it's in contradiction with the charter.

Thanks,

Chris

On the rating subject, I ended up changing from a G rating to an R (adult but no sexually explicit conversation) because of problems with the automatic text filter in G rated rooms.

Someone got a warning and was threatened with being bounced by the system for asking about the song "Who Killed Cock Robin"...

Good points both of you -

I'll change the rating to an R to accomodate those word issues.

If you'd sing it around your kids then it is OK I think - it still leaves a lot of grey area but several folks mentioned inviting family and friends to listen - What would you prefer they heard? A bawdy ballad is a whole different chunk of change than a string of "R" rated words strung together -

I don't have a lot of experience so my premise is use some common sense. I believe we are all adults, all capable of making mistakes, and are doing this to have fun and entertain each other. And I think the two sessions we've had so far are typical of what we should expect -

I'm modeling this to a degree on how KatRose runs her room. She will cut you some slack but if you maintain a negative air you are out - She expects courteous adult behavior - I think we should also.

Doing great so far!!

Steve

I think you've got the right approach, Steve. Not that I think the concern I expressed warrants changing the room rating, but certainly Jon's does--reminds me of the person who got a warning message from the Eudora content filter because they were sending out a message that mentioned the President and Vice President, based only on flagging the one's last name and the other's first name, which as plain ol' words are perfectly innocent, but can be vulgar slang: George Bush and Dick Cheney. These filters just aren't as smart as we need them to be, yet.

Interesting you raise the question of kids, though. The one time I've done Barrett's at a "family" show (an international students' dinner to which the community was invited), Beth overcame my objections and talked me into singing "well hang them all" instead--on the basis of "family" concerns, and the fact that she worked in the International Student Advising Office at the time. To be frank, it really still didn't feel right to change it, but then again, this one guy who came from our church who's a bit conservative theologically (like my grandma, not like Falwell) enjoyed it immensely, never knowing the original might have offended him, as did his kids--kids just eat up that lively sea-shantyish stuff for some reason. But I think I'd still sing the original in the room, unless someone objected--different settings.

Would I have sung it to my foster daughter when she was a kid? Yeah. But then again, her (actual) mother sang "The Sexual Life of the Camel," so it was too late to protect her not-so-innocent ears. She turned out alright anyway. :-)

But there are no easy answers or hard-and-fast rules on this stuff, I don't think. I just know that if--unlikely as the occurrence may be--someone says something I'm singing makes them uncomfortable, for themselves or for their kids, I'll stop (if I'm reading the chat at the time, at least--those who've been in the room the last couple of weeks know the trouble I've run into by reading while singing (or was that sinning) :-) ).

Chris

When this was on Hearme, we handled it on an as-needed basis.

When kids were present, we always knew it-- and behaved accordingly in song and text chat. They were offspring of Mudcatters, with parents present, as far as I know, and they SANG!

Beyond that, if a young person wanders in, it's not our fault if they hear something bawdy-- it's that their parental beings have failed to monitor or filter the computer's use, properly. In your intro copy, you can ask that under-18's signing in let you know they are present, but I don't think you can really control what material people will be doing.

Another approach would be to offer occasional "family sings" in the room, and just specify that the occasion will be such.

Fun being in charge, eh? *G* Can't please ANYONE! *G*

Susan, when we used Hearme, we were in a room that was pretty well hidden from those outside Mudcat and there was no question of a room rating. There was also no ability to admin a room although I can't remember there ever being a problem there.

The Paltalk rooms, particulary the open ones did present new problems, the room rating being one of them. I still do not know a correct answer to this one and I don't believe we really fit into any category - I'd guess something like a PG rating would suit us best.

The only thing I can say is that in my experience, people both from Mudcat and from outside that genuinely want to use the folk rooms seem to be reasonable and would not want to cause offense although handling a problem regarding under 18s in an Adult room could be difficult as I don't think they are really supposed to be there according to Paltalk's rules - I don't think the signing in would be allowed.

Jon
