From: Jim Dixon

YOU'RE BREAKING MY HEART
(Pat Genaro and Sunny Skylar)

CHO: You're breaking my heart 'cause you're leaving.
You've fallen for somebody new.
It isn't too easy believing
You'd leave after all we've been through.

It's breaking my heart to remember
The dreams we depended upon.
You're leaving a slow dying ember.
I'll miss you, my love, when you're gone.

I wish you joy, though teardrops burn,
But if some day you should want to return,
Please hurry back and we'll make a new start.
Till then, you're breaking my heart.

Still, The harry Nilsson version has a certain something. I mean who can't like a stanza that goes thus: "You're breaking my heart, you're tearing me apart so F--K you!" By the way Kevin, how have you been? Kindest regards, Neil

Sizeable hit in UK in 1965 for Keely Smith...just thought I'd mention that.

The Inkspots' "You're Breaking My Heart" was released in 1949 (Decca 24693). The info is from HERE.

Now that's a surprise to me. I dont' think I ever heard the Ink Spots version. Vic Damone had the hit, as I remember it.

McGrath: your point is well taken about heartbrak and country songs.

Sure, it turns out not to be Country - what I mean is, getting your heart broken is the central theme to an awful lot of Country Music.

And a bloke called Eric sends his heartfelt thanks for finding this one.

"You're Breaking My Heart" (1948 w.m., Pat Genaro, Sunny Skylar).
(Julius Mattfeld, Variety Music Cavalcade 1620-1961, rev. ed., Prentice-Hall, 1962) The Great Song Thesaurus (1984, Oxford UP), however, writes the date of composition was "1949."

But Cowpie is devoted almost exclusively to "Country" music, isn't it McGrath?

This song was on the Pop, not Country charts in the U. S.

"You could have found them at LYRICS WORLD ...."

But if I'd done that I wouldn't have got the pointer to Leoncavallo and all those other Midi's. The Mudcat always provides more than you actually ask for.

But I'm still surprised that my search at Cowpie didn't throw up hundreds of songs using the line. I mean, it sums up one of the basic themes.

The tune is based on Leoncavallo's "La Mattinata". MIDI (clip) is HERE.

A very popular song in the United States in the late 1940's recorded by Vic Damone.

Not bad! Thanks there, masato. I'd wrongly assumed it'd be country, with a first line likee that, which was why I tried CowPie. But, as always, the Mudcat comes through.

Incidentally, here's the parody that someone wrote for the goodbye:

You're breaking my heart 'cos you're leaving
You're leaving because of somebody new
It isn't a dream, it isn't a lie because it's true.

You're breaking my heart 'cos you're leaving
Your computer will miss you like we do
All the paperwork you had to do
The computer can have a rest after you.

Well, the line is:

"You're breaking my heart 'cos you're leaving"

Someone used it for a goodbye card where my wife works, and she asked me to see if I could trace the song.

I'd have thought a line like that would probably have figured in hundreds of songs. But when I tried asking CowPie's search engine, it just came up with a bunch of songs, but none of which contain the line.

Any suggestions?
