For devilment we would play it on my long dead grandfather's gramaphone when our parents were out. I think we broke the 78 and several others - I recall using them as frisbees as young kids who had no idea of their value...needless to say my parents were none to happy with our handiwork. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: paddy m'gintys goat From: Jeanie Date: 17 Sep 08 - 04:25 AM Aha ! Lovely song ! I wonder if you know that this song features, specified in the script, in a very funny scene in the Alan Ayckbourn play - "Flat Spin" ? In the play, a girl is pretending she is the owner of a luxury flat and has invited a man over for dinner, wanting desperately to impress him. (She doesn't know that the minimalist furnishing is because the flat is actually not occupied - being used as a surveillance cover by the police). She picks out one of the only 2 CDs as romantic background music.....only to find that when it starts to play it is dear old Val singing Paddy McGinty at maximum volume. "Err...do you like this ?"- "Oh, yes, can't get enough of it " - she says, jigging about. Here is the song on YouTube with a lovely film of pygmy goats and other cute creatures - jeanie |

Subject: Lyr Add: PADDY MCGINTY'S GOAT From: GUEST Date: 16 Mar 06 - 09:46 AM Actually, I think I might have the whole song for you: Mr. Paddy McGinty, an Irishman of note, Came into fortune and bought himself a goat. He said. "Sure o' goat's milk, I mean to have me fill" And when he brought the nanny home, he found it was a bill. And now all the ladies who live in Killaloo Are all wearin' bustles like their mothers used to do. They each wear a bolster beneath their petticoat And leave the rack of providence to Paddy McGinty's goat. Mickey Riley he went to the races 'other day, He won $20 and shouted "hip hooray!" He held up the note saying, "Look what I have got." The goat came up and grabbed at it and swallowed all the lot. "Oh, he's eatin' me money," cried Mickey with a huff. They sent for the doctor. He brought a stomach pump. He pumped and he pumped for that $20 note And all he got was makin's out of Paddy McGinty's goat. And sure Paddy's old goat had a wondrous appetite, And one day for breakfast, he had some dynamite, A big box of matches, a quart of kerosene, Two pints of petrol, the same of gasoline. He sat by the fire and didn't give a hang. He swallowed a spark and then exploded with a BANG! So if you go to heaven, you can bet your dollar note, That the angel who has whiskers on is Paddy McGinty's Goat.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: paddy m'gintys goat From: Joe_F Date: 01 Oct 04 - 06:47 PM Possibly the dollar denomination was inserted in America -- or the whole thing may be American (if you were in Ireland writing a song, would you bother to mention that the hero was a Irishman?). I found out about this song in _A Drinking Life_, the autobiography of the American journalist Pete Hamill, who describes it as having been in oral circulation among the American Irish during W.W. II. His father sang it in a Brooklyn bar: "Laughter and cheers and off he went, verse after verse, even one about Hitler, added to help the war effort. Then everyone in the bar joined in the song's final lines: And we'll leave the rest to Providence -- And Paddy McGinty's Goat!" The acknowledgment at the back of the book says "...by R. P. Weston, B. Lee, B. Adams, and B. Allen. Copyright 1917 renewed 1945...." So now we know who the two Bobs were, FWIW. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: paddy m'gintys goat From: Bob Bolton Date: 30 Sep 04 - 07:15 PM G'day Joe F (and everyone else who has posted to this thread over the last 6½ years!), The version (linked way above) in the DT is pretty close to the way I have absorbed this song over my lifetime - by a combination of osmosis and occasional confirmation from written sources. This is basically the same material you provide - obviously from someone whose version relies on some degree of memory / personal choice / local version. The "German Submarine" verses quoted by Gareth and Grandad Baker's Grandson, in 2002 and 2003, seem to be World War (One ... ?) updates, some of which I have in a collection of "World War Songs" - somewhere on one of my bookshelves! The "Dynamite" verses I remember mostly in Boy Scout campfire / Gang Shows contexts ... Both my parents were heavily involved in Scouting here in Australia and my father helped assemble the first Australian Scout Song Book (compiled, mostly, by pinching popular song texts from English "Community Song Books"!). I'm sure I would have a few of these tucked away and, between them and my own collection, I could probably probably string together enough verses of Paddy M'Ginty's Goat to tax the patience of the most dedicated! Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: Lyr Add: PADDY MCGINTY'S GOAT From: Lanfranc Date: 30 Sep 04 - 07:04 PM I sometimes astonish myself at the depths to which my sheet music collection will sink, but here's about as close as I am likely to get to a definitive version of this song! Despite the Irish propensity to adopt any song as Irish if any Irishman ever sang it, I think they can have this one, but I'm a little doubtful about the use of the dollar for currency, even if the change did come in pence! From the Val Doonican Songbook (c)1965 Francis, Day & Hunter Ltd PADDY MCGINTY'S GOAT Words and Music by R. P. Weston, Bert Lee and The Two Bobs (c)1917 F,D & H Ltd Now Patrick McGinty, an Irishman of note, Fell in for a fortune and he bought himself a goat. Says he, "Sure of goat's milk, I goin' to have me fill," But when he brought the nanny home, he found it was a bill! All the young ladies who live in Killaloo, They're all wearing bustles like their mother used to do! They each wear a bolster beneath their petticoat And leave the rest to providence and Paddy McGinty's goat. Missus Burke to her daughter said, "Listen, Mary Jane: Who was the man you were cuddling in the lane? He'd long wiry whiskers a-hanging from his chin." "'Twas only Pat McGinty's goat," she answer'd with a grin. She went away from the village in disgrace. She came back with powder and paint on her face. She'd rings on her fingers. She wore a sable coat. You bet your life she didn't get those from Paddy McGinty's goat. Now, Nora McCarthy the knot was goin' to tie. She washed out her trousseau and hung it out to dry. Along came the goat and he saw the bits of white And chewed up all her fallderals upon her wedding night. "Oh, turn out the light, quick!" she shouted out to Pat, "For though I'm your bride, sure I'm not worth lookin' at. I had two of everything, I told you when I wrote, But now I've one of nothing all through Paddy McGinty's Goat." Mickey Riley he went to the races t'other day. He won twenty dollars and shouted, "Hip-hooray!" He held up the note, shouting, "Look at what I've got!" The goat came up and grabbed at it and swallowed up the lot. "He's eaten me bank note," said Mickey with a hump. They went for the doctor and they got a stomach pump. They pumped and pumped for the twenty dollar note, But all they got was ninepence out of Paddy McGinty's Goat. Now ould Paddy's goat had a wondrous appetite, And one day for breakfast he had some dynamite. A big box of matches he swallowed all serene; Then out he went and swallowed up a quart of paraffin. He sat by the fireside. He didn't give a hang. He swallowed a spark, and exploded with a bang. So, if you go to heav'n, you can bet a dollar note, That the angel with the whiskers is Paddy McGinty's goat! Might even revive it at Blackmore on Monday! Alan |
Subject: Lyr Add: PADDY MCGINTY'S GOAT From: Joe_F Date: 30 Sep 04 - 05:49 PM Here is a version that was sent me by one Matthew Cline after I inquired about this song on rec.music.folk in 1994. He copied it off a record, with due caution as to accuracy. PADDY MCGINTY'S GOAT -------------------- Mr. Patrick McGinty, an Irishman of note, Came into fortune and bought himself a goat. Said he "sure o' goat's milk, I mean to have my fill" But when he got his nanny home, he found it was a bill. Now all the ladies that live in Killaloo, They're all wearin' bustles like their mothers used to do. They each turned a bolster beneath their petticoats And they leave the rest to providence and Paddy McGinty's goat. Little Laura McHardy, the night was goin' to tie, She washed out her trousseau and hung it out to dry. The goat came along and he saw the bits of white. He chewed up all her falderals & on her weddin' night. "Oh, turn out the light," she hollered out to Pat, "Although I'm your bride, I'm not worth lookin' at. I had two of everything - I told you when I wrote - Now I've one of nothing all for Paddy McGinty's Goat." Mickey Reilly to the races t'other day, He won 20 dollars and shouted, "Hip-hooray." He held up the note, and said, "Look what I've got," The goat came up and grabbed it and swallered all the lot. "He swallowed up me bank notes," said Mickey with a hump. They ran for the doctor and he brought his stomach pump. They pumped and pumped for the 20-dollar note, But he wound up with no money all for Paddy McGinty's goat. Mrs. Berg said to her daughter, "Listen, Mary Jane. Who was the old man you were neckin' in the lane? He had long wiry whiskers all hangin' from his chin." "'Twas only Paddy McGinty's goat," she answered with a grin. Then she went away from the village in disgrace, Came back with powder and paint on her face, Rings on 'er fingers and wearin' a sable coat. You can bet you hat she didn't get that from Paddy McGinty's goat. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: last verses paddy mcginty,s goat From: GUEST Date: 18 Jul 04 - 05:03 PM Val Doonican did a version of this which I think was a bit different in the last verse Now old Paddy's goat, it had a wonderous appetite And one day for breakfast it had some dynamite A big box of matches he swallowed all serene And out he went and swallowed up a quart of parafin (PRONOUNCED "PARAFEENE" TO RHYME WITH "SERENE") He sat by the fire side he didn't give a hang He swallowed a spark and exploded with a bang So when you go to heaven you can bet the dollar note That the angel with the whiskers on is Paddy McGinty's goat. Subject: RE: paddy m'gintys goat From: GUEST,Grandad Baker's Grandson Date: 23 Dec 03 - 06:01 AM There's a verse here which has been added over the years I believe. I'm not sure of its authenticity but it seems to fit in pretty well. Off the west coast of Ireland one morning there were seen As plain as any pikes, there's the German submarines. When Coastguard Maloney fell over in a fit, Said Paddy McGinty's goat, "It's time for me to do my bit." He dove into the water as frisky as a whale, Swam around the U-boat, waggin' his little tail. He upped with his horn and he stuck it in the boat And sent the Hun to Heligoland did Paddy McGinty's Goat. Now the bold Irish Guards, though you'd think it was romance, Adopted the goat and they took him out to France. The day that they landed, he heard the bugle blow. He ducked his little cranium and ran to meet the foe. The Germans retreated and hurriedly they fled, And holding their noses, they tumbled over dead. "Ach," said the Kaiser, "there's poison gas afloat." It was only the effluvium from Paddy McGinty's goat. |
