I've friends who regularly wear their kilts, as the evening wears on us ladies are regularly reminding them to keep their.... 'deportment' sorted out. Though after a while... it just gets plain boring!

Long long ago I was a very bad highland dancer. The Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing decreed that we should wear black briefs beneath our kilts when dancing. A friend went into one of the better department stores and asked for a pair. The clerk said, "Does your MOTHER know you're buying those?" So much for the SOBHD.

I knew a kid in a pipe band, who wore a very elaborate uniform. When we kidded him about it, he kidded back telling everyone that he had $500 worth of plaid underwear under it. Now, when you are 15 that is a challenge. So three of us bought a pair of plaid boxer shorts and sent them to him for his birthday. Mother spent years avoiding his mother, because they fit, and the good lady would never believe we had guessed his size.

At an SCA event, one of the Scots was quite drunk. Some female asked him what he had under his kilt, he whooped and pulled it up to show her. She reacted like she'd never seen one before. (And I know for a fact she'd seen several.) Screamed and hid her face.
He was so pleased with the reaction that he showed Justinian, our resident fop.
Justinian eyed the display, clucked his tongue and said, "Is that all?"

On the sidetrack about Haddington Folk Club and Davie Robertson, it depends on the ten-year-old.... I went with my mum when I was about that age (it was in the Pheasant then) and was always made very welcome. I have fond memories of Davie singing 'Sairly Plagued by the Wind'

This is the kind of question that drives me away from Mudcat in despair at the sad stereotypes that infest it. My ancestors wore the kilt, but not the sewn / military one currently affected by the affected and those in the fashion, plus three reasonable people who I know, who wear it in and out of the fashion, in the city or collecting the sheep up the hills. Scotsmen may average 5ft 10. I'm A 6ft 7 Scot and always wear underpants under the kilt for fear of wee Edinburgh grannies sneaking a a peek at what dangles there.

The thought of their laghter ringing along Prince's Street is painfult to imagine.

Scotmen average around 5ft 10 inches tall. Thistles grow about three foot high. That's why I find it hard to believe that the highlanders wore nothing under their kilts!!!

We use the term "regimental" at our Renaissance Faires. Though why anybody would want to wear a short wool skirt with no underwear to sit around on hay bales in 95 degree weather is beyond me. There are such things as tiny bugs called hay bale mites...I would also like to remind gentlemen who are not used to wearing skirts to be very aware of how they sit when wearing kilts! ;-)

Zipster, Davie has many songs of that calibre. IMHO some of them are even better. If you search the Forum using the filter box and input "Noran Water" (Or is it "Norran Water") you will find a parody of Jim Reid's song written by Davie.

The first Tuesday in Balerno (which used to be and may still be held in the Grey Horse) is NOT the Folk Club meeting, btw, it is an informal singaround led my Morag Dunbar. It is a really enjoyable evening, as I recollect.

No Balerno met in the Kestrel Bar up until last year when they moved to the rugby club.

It was Davie Robertson's apparent participation that made me interested in H'ton as I'm a big "Star of the Bar" fan. Is that a one-off or does he have more of that calibre?

I guess I ahould get myself along and find out huh.

Kris, I think you are indeed missing some history. There is a difference between light-hearted risqué humor and in -your-face obscenity. Check out the "Sears Catalog model thread" for a further example of that.

Of course, we know now that Bob has severe problems but when he was taken to task on this thread we didn't know that.

Your daughter would be more than welcome, the Club is always delighted to see young recruits. It is also a no-smoking venue as far as I remember (I haven't been back to Britain for a few years).

Haddington Folk Club is great. Wonderfully friendly, but probably not as suitable for a ten year old. Davie Robertson, who wrote "Star of the Bar" is a regular there. Meetings used to be on Wednesdays (maybe still are ), same night as Edinburgh Club, unfortunately.

I take it you go to the "first Tuesday of the month" meeting in Balerno? Used to be in the Grey Horse, but I think they changed the venue.

Correct, it's approximately 7 to 9 yards long and 40" wide, pleated in the back and wrapped around and belted, thus the term the "Belted Plaid", however it does "fly-up" in a gust of wind, I've both seen and experienced it myself. Couple years ago at National Tartan Day in D.C. the wind picked up and my partner said, "I hope you're wearing something under there..."

Skarpi when in Edinburgh get yourself alongto the folk club at the Cafe Royal, and ask if they still hold Ceilidhs at the Assembly rooms in George St. I've not been for a while myself, but there's usually enough birling to make the answer to your lady friend's question self-evident.

Skarpi - If you are going to wear a kilt then it's probably best to avoid "Hard Feelings" anyway - might be a bit too obvious. I've never worn a kilt - but if your girlfiend really wants to know what's under one - perhaps I ought to get one and volunteer myself. Second point. Also remember that the traditional kilt/tartan is more of a wrap around thing made with quite a lot of fabric - it wasn't exactly a skirt that could "fly-up" in a gust of wind.

Third point. ummm - hell, I don't have one - but it's 85 degrees (F) here in sunny Florida.

Somebody should add that almost no-one wore underwear until the industrial revolution made cheap cloth common, so it all depends on how traditional you're feeling.
