Virgin have agreed to pay $28 million to Mariah not to record for them. Two thoughts ocur to me. Who would Mudcatters pay to stop recording and how much would you accept not to record for Virgin or any other company.

I would opt for Celine Dion, and would settle for a couple of million in the retirement fund - but I come cheap.

Listen, I'm at least ten times worse a singer than Carey so I'll take $280,000,000. I think she a suckass personality and singer and can kiss my ass for free, but if we're paying not to record here, then gimmee mine!

I'll settle for 28 million, the house of my choosing, and all my utilities and phone bills for life. And a new car whenever I want one. I think I'm a lot more entertaining when I perform, and I stay after a performance to talk to the folks that came to see me. Carey's just a clone of every other female pop singer recording these days, so I'd like to see all the others (Brittany Speers, any sister of M. Jackson) paid not to perform, too. And any who appears on any tabloid TV show under the assumption that their lives are newsworthy.

I will accept a can of Guinness and a big chocolate cake as my agreement never to record for Virgin.

I would contribute to a Stop Mariah Carey Fund if it meant that I never had to hear her annoying little squeal again. I'm a mild-mannered sort, but the woman who sat just over the "wall" from me in our office listens to a pop radio station every day. She's a very sweet woman and tried to keep the radio turned down, which generally worked just fine. She had to get up and down a lot so she couldn't wear headphones. Usually I learned to tune out the subcutaneous, uninteresting music. Except ... when Mire-ah Carries came on. That little high-pitched voice penetrated my concentration like a dentist's drill and my usual serene demeanor ... ok, my usual relatively calm demeanor ... would start to get its hackles up. I knew we were going to be moving soon, and I also knew we were the "new kids" and I didn't want all the ladies in that department to start thinking we were a bunch of prissy snots. So I didn't say anything. But it took us a whole lot longer to move to our new offices than I thought it would, so I've now heard three lifetimes worth of Mariah Carey, thankyou very much. I'm going to send Virgin Records $5 to help sweeten the pot. Anyone else?

Oh this is great...

Time to make fun of someone who's had a serious mental breakdown?

Fucking hilarious!

You people sicken me

I thought Maria Carey was quite sweet when she guested on "Ally McBeal". OK, she isn't the greatest singer in the world, but I couldn't bring myself to dislike her.

(Actually, I couldn't bring myself to dislike ANY woman who looks like that ....)

Guest, I started this thread, not as a way to mock Mariah Carey's mental health problem, merely to question the idea of someone being paid a large amount of money not to sing or record again. I assume that most contributers to Mudcat play, perform, or enjoy music in some way. In your case I may have been mistaken.

Look after youself, Van

I'm guessing that Virgin "bought out" Mariah's contract. If so, what's the big deal? It's done all the time.

Time to make fun of someone who's a bad performer, regardless. She's technically a very good singer - great range and stuff - it's just that she has no soul or any feeling in her singing, and the stuff she sings is complete pap with less musical value than Spaw's farts. If she sometime chooses to use her talent to sing good music, then great - if not, then the sooner her stuff stops being touted around the better.

Graham.

An Associated Press blurb copied from a news service (I'd link it, but I don't think it'll be there tomorrow):

Virgin Records Ends Mariah Carey Deal

Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002

LONDON (AP) - Virgin Records America is ending troubled diva Mariah Carey's multi-album contract with a $28 million buyout, Virgin's parent company EMI announced Wednesday.

The contract would have paid Carey a reported $100 million.

``Glitter,'' her first album for Virgin and the soundtrack for her movie of the same name, was a disappointment, failing to live up to the best-selling status of her previous albums for Columbia Records.

It was released after the singer was hospitalized last year for a much-publicized breakdown.

EMI had released a statement earlier this month denying it had agreed to buy out Carey's pricey deal.

The singer's stardom was forged from a wholesome image and soaring ballads that highlighted her multi-octave voice.

But over the last few years, her image has changed. After her divorce from Tommy Mottola, the former president of Columbia and current Sony Music chief, her once-demure image became sexier; she also switched musically, using more hip-hop beats instead of the adult contemporary sound that made her famous.

There are a few others I would add to the list to pay to not sing; but I can't tell them all apart well enough to give you a list. My kids tell me who some of them are, and have taught me what to listen for. But some of them (as has always been the case in popular music) just don't have much merit. They fade away eventually.

Interesting how the snipers so frequently drop in anonymously. It's okay to be an ardent fan of someone we're poking fun at--few would deny that--but the remark would be more meaningful if GUEST would suggest a good example of her work we can look to, and remark that she's had her share of difficulties, rather than hit and run with a point oblique to the discussion at hand.

There is not one Maria Carey song that I can listen to throughout - after 30 seconds of that warbling, I can stand it no longer. Boy, is she is heavy going.

Now GUEST Wilson, I can say what I like about Ms Rusby...freedom of speech and all that...she's very nice and all and sounds quite pretty but it's just a bit samey and whiney and she never smiles when she sings and looks like she's having a godawful time...needs a bit of livening up that girl...probably has her mum's broom handle (see Cobbler's daughter) up her arse for being naughty with a boy and as a result has become stiff and boring...

Maybe a surgical procedure would help...

:)

P.S. I have been to see her five times just to check...cos I always go and see people a few times to make sure. But i must say that Who Will Sing Me Lullabies is a fab song...
