Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old Scotch(or Scots?) Mother Mine From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 24 Jan 02 - 09:36 AM Nowadays, yes, but the terms were used interchangeably -in Scotland as elsewhere- until well into the first half of the 20th century. Mother Mine may prove a little hard to find without some sort of clue; could we perhaps have a few lines to get us started? There are a good many possibilities; for example:
At The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music:
Mother o' Mine (If I were hang'd on the highest hill, Mother o' Mine...) Words by Rudyard Kipling. Music by Frank E. Tours
That Old Irish Mother of Mine. (In my mind there's a beautiful picture...) Lyric by William Jerome. Music by Harry Von Tilzer. That Old Fashioned Mother of Mine. (There's a dear little valley in County Kildare...) Lyric by J. Will Callahan. Music by Lee S. Roberts
At Duke University:
That Wonderful Mother of Mine (The moon never beams without bringing me dreams...) Walter Goodwin & Clyde Hager.
That's without even considering the many modern songs with similar titles, though Susan MacKeown's Mother of Mine turned up in a discussion here some time ago.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old Scotch(or Scots?) Mother Mine From: Jim McLean Date: 22 Feb 06 - 05:13 PM The song I know starts 'Old Scotch mither, mine, You are with me all the time ...' If this is the song, then I'll give you the rest of the lyrics and by the way if you ever hear it sung as 'old Scots mither mine' it's time to throw up. The adjective 'scotch' fits beautifully. The statement by Kendall is so, so narrow minded and incorrect. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old Scotch(or Scots?) Mother Mine From: GUEST,porksausagemike Date: 23 Feb 06 - 01:31 PM Can anybody provide with a music score for "That old fashioned Mother of Mine"...she wears no fine clothes or no rich silken hose, but there's something that makes her divine, for the angels above taught the way how to love to that old fashioned mother of mine. I'm unable to transpose a score from 4 flats to the key of A D G C or F...you can prob guess I play a melodian! Many thanks, Mike, "Sunny" Bournemouth UK...and it is now gently snowing. |
Subject: Lyr Add: THAT OLD FASHIONED MOTHER OF MINE From: Jim Dixon Date: 27 Feb 06 - 09:52 PM Porksausagemike: There are several songs with the same, or a very similar, title, but this seems to be the one you want. I haven't found any sheet music yet. THAT OLD FASHIONED MOTHER OF MINE Words, David Worton. Music, David H. Nicholls. 1919 1. There are colleens with eyes just as fair as the skies. There are colleens the world thinks are handsome or wise. But deep in my heart, there's a sweet memory Of someone who still holds attractions for me. CHORUS: Just an old-fashioned lady with old-fashioned ways, And a smile that says, "Welcome!" to you, An old-fashioned bedside where she kneels and prays When the toil of the long day is through. Though she wears no fine clothes, Or no rich silken hose, Still there's something that makes her divine; For the angels above Taught the way how to love To that old-fashioned mother of mine. 2. There are jewels I know that set men's hearts aglow, If they're worn by the colleens that they worship so; But there is a jewel that I worship more: It's set in the heart of the one I adore. [A sound sample of a barbershop quartet singing this song can be heard by clicking the title near the bottom of this page.] |
