Subject: How long does the winter last? From: Morticia Date: 25 Jan 02 - 11:30 PM Here,(U.K) we seem to be going into our 47th month.....well, okay, maybe not that long, but it's certainly been wet, cold and dismal for much longer than I need.So I'm thinking, well, Skarpi has it much worse, (God love him) but Mark Cohen has it so very much better ( not that I'm jealous or anything ...she says through gritted teeth). How long is the winter where you are and how cold does it get? Anyone seeing primroses or the local equivalent thereof yet? Who still has chilblains? Anyone want to run away with me to the Carribean? |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 25 Jan 02 - 11:40 PM Roses are trimed, but indoors, the prims are blooming So sorry, in your woods the weather is glooming Daffy-down-dilly's will soon be in town Wearing white pettycoat and their green gown.
You should have planted crocus, they're the first to appear. |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: Clinton Hammond Date: 25 Jan 02 - 11:42 PM Here in Windsor, I'm still waiting for winter to hit... |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: katlaughing Date: 26 Jan 02 - 12:05 AM It was 15 below zero where my sister lives in Colorado, Mortee, the past few nights. Our winter here in Wyoming has been such a chaotic mess...the past few days it has been cold with a steady 30mph wind with gustss of over 60 and so very, very dry, it looks like pix of the Dust Bowl of the 1930's. even if we gripe about the snow, we are sore in need of it here...all the ponds, etc. stayed dry throughout last spring and summer. Without any snow they will remain so. I worry for all of the wildlife. So...how about sending your rain over here?:-) |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: Blackcatter Date: 26 Jan 02 - 12:08 AM It got down to 28 F three nights in a row 2 weeks ago, but the days made it up to 50 F anyhow. Currently is is Midnight and I have the windows open, the fans on and I'm sitting in a pair of shorts. My thermometer says it's 80 F in the house, I'd guess it's 75 F outside (I just came in an hour ago). It's supposed to rain a bit this weekend, but the temp should stay in the mid 80s during the day. Where do I live? Orlando, FL. Winter? We don't vant no stinkin' winter! Please visit - I'll buy the first round at the English Pub 1/2 block from my home. Hell, if you prove to me your a Mudcatter, I'll let you sleep on my couch! pax yall |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 26 Jan 02 - 12:19 AM Here on the prairies of western Canada it has been dry, dry, dry, until this week. In southern Alberta we are getting a little snow along with bitter cold, well below zero (perhaps 30 below F. tonight). I can sense Mark Cohen in Hawai'i laughing. |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: Blackcatter Date: 26 Jan 02 - 12:27 AM Yeah, but remember that Hawai'ians PAY for the weather - Ask Mark how much basic living expenses are. |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: Lyrical Lady Date: 26 Jan 02 - 01:24 AM Hi Morticia ... not too cold here on Saltspring ...we've had some lovely days...But not enough sunlight to ward off SADS ...hurry up Spring! LL |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: Ebbie Date: 26 Jan 02 - 04:38 AM In Juneau, Alaska, we have BEAUTIFUL snow on the ground- and lots of it. But the wind has turned cold now and one tends to keep moving. The temps are ranging from 15 or so to 21F. Let's hear it for winter! |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: Hrothgar Date: 26 Jan 02 - 04:39 AM We have a bad week in July, when the temperature can get down to five or six degrees Celsius. Eat your hearts out! |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: GUEST,Souter Date: 26 Jan 02 - 05:35 AM We never got winter this year. There were people eating garden tomatoes as late as december. My rose bush lost its last rose a week ago, now it's starting to bud. And all this while down South, they get snow. Go figure. |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 26 Jan 02 - 07:08 AM This has been a most unusual winter so far here in central New England, with precious little snow and temps forecasted to be in the 50s this weekend. Normally we'd be shoveling 6-10 inches every week or so through early March; last year we were still shoveling into April. I predict we'll get our winter weather in Feb and March this year; the apple trees really need a good 6-8 weeks of snow (Mother Nature's fertilizer) but it may be too late. Spring equals mud, pollen, and black flies- but it's soooo pretty and so nice to shed the winter layers! |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: gnu Date: 26 Jan 02 - 07:24 AM Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada has about three feet of snow on the ground. Snow and cold were about three weeks late this year... usually starts third week of November. We've had it rather warm, between -5C and -15C, but the full moon is Monday, and given that winter started about three weeks later than usual, I assume we are in for our normal -15C to -30C over the next month or so. March sees a return to -5C to -15C, but we often get raging blizzards during that time. The end ? Anywhere from April 1 to 30 is when the daffodils come up to get snowed upon by the odd nor'easter. A brief, wet snow has been known to fall until mid-May, but it hits green grass. |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: MMario Date: 26 Jan 02 - 08:32 AM I've seen over a foot of snow here (upstate NY ) mid-may; but usually the beginning of April is the last of the winter weather. Can't count on a lack of frost until about May 30th though, though the last killing frosts are usually again, in April. |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: GUEST,Quinn the Eskimo Date: 26 Jan 02 - 08:38 AM In West Lothian (Scotland) the only way you can tell that that it is summer, not winter, is that the days get longer. |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: sledge Date: 26 Jan 02 - 10:32 AM Winter here in the Sahara usually means its a bit cold at night for a couple of months, but I'm back in shorts, t shirts and sandles now. The shock of going back to the UK aftewards though not looking forward to that. Run away with Morticia to the Caribian, mmmmmm, is that suitcase still in the loft :-) Sledge |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: SINSULL Date: 26 Jan 02 - 10:53 AM We have had almost no winter in NYC. Last week we had 4" of snow, the first real snow of the year. It was gone in less than 24 hours. My rhododendron actually bloomed in early January. And the poor daffodils and crocus keep shooting up, dropping down and getting thoroughly confused. |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: Bat Goddess Date: 26 Jan 02 - 11:06 AM I'm almost hesitant to say anything -- don't want to take a chance on spoiling the unseasonably mild winter we've been having (a bit closer to the Seacoast in NH from where Animaterra is). Temperatures are way above normal, and minimal snowfall. We did just come out of a couple weeks of rainish-snowishness with no real accumulation, just annoyance factor. Especially during the commute. Like being nibbled to death by ducks. Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: sophocleese Date: 26 Jan 02 - 11:39 AM Its been a very mild winter so far in Orillia. We finally got snow after Christmas. Today we have spring-like temperatures instead of more usual January cold with a north wind. My daughter was running around outside without a coat. |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: Bill D Date: 26 Jan 02 - 11:39 AM We seem to have the advancement of Global warming, a possible return of "La Nina", the destruction of the rain forests, and changes in underwater currents (especially in the N. Atlantic)...all competing to mess up what we thought were 'patterns'.....looks like Weathermen are going to need Tarot cards and Crystal balls to be competitive! VERY little winter here in Wash DC so far...(in the 50s & 60s when it should be in the teens & 20s),,,,dry and confusing. |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: Desdemona Date: 26 Jan 02 - 12:11 PM Until spring comes, of course! Here in New England, winters can be very variable; several years ago we had 2 ina row that literally HEAPED snow upon us from early December till the end of march, then we had a few with very minimal snow but horrible cold. This year it was mild till January, and we've had SOME snow, but I'm still bracing myself for what Feb & March may bring! What I envy about UK weather is the nice, long springs you have---it's really a proper season in it's own right, whereas here we seem to go from miserable cold to miserable heat, with very little in between! |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: Leeder Date: 26 Jan 02 - 03:20 PM The winter in Calgary lasts from December 22 to March 22 (roughly), same as anywhere else. Of course we can get wintry weather in other months. I've been snowed on in every month of the year here, but heavy snowfalls can be expected from September to May (but the snow doesn't stay on the ground as long in the fall and spring months). Today it's minus 25 Celsius, with lots of snow on the ground from a heavy fall yesterday. A chinook is predicted for Wednesday, with the temperature rising almost to freezing. And my car chose yesterday to break down, so I'm without wheels for a bit. |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: Herga Kitty Date: 26 Jan 02 - 03:21 PM Mortie Today in Harrow was dark, wet and dismal, though not especially cold. This is the time of year that makes you realise how good it is to get away from. It's only a fortnight until Stony Stratford, 4 weeks until the Middle Bar reunion and 6 weeks until Dog Days. If that helps at all..... Kitty |
Subject: RE: BS: How long does the winter last? From: Rolfyboy6 Date: 26 Jan 02 - 03:34 PM In coastal Northern California we are far ahead of average in rainfall. Rain, rain, rain. We've had clear days for the last four with freezing every night, but the rain is back now. Moss and mildew on the north side of everything. Spring is taking the long way around. As usual, the tourists look confused. They keep looking for Los Angeles in the 1930s. |
