Subject: RE: BS: Do Patriots Have a Chance From: catspaw49 Date: 04 Feb 02 - 05:17 PM Blanda also played QB. As soon as Rick said "B" the only Eagle that immediately came to mind was Chuck Bednarik. I don't recall him ever kicking a goal, but he kicked a lot of ass!!! As I recall he did boot Gifford through the uprights didn't he? There was only one running back who was ever a match for Bednarik. Could the kicker have been named something common like Brown or Baker....kinda' sticks in my mind. Also, who did come first in the sidewinders? Could it have been Stenerud (sp) with the Chiefs? Spaw |

Almost makes me want to go out and buy some Bud Light. Almost. Tom Dempsey was an Eagle before he was a Saint, of course. And as soon as I have my ginkgo I'll probably remember the name of the Eagles old kicker for Rick. And who was the guy who was both QB and kicker? Was it Blanda? Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: BS: Do Patriots Have a Chance From: catspaw49 Date: 04 Feb 02 - 12:11 PM Ah yes....another Brown great! Lou "The Toe" Groza. Rick, how about Tom Dempsey? Remember him? Only had half a foot and he kicked the longest field goal in history....63 yards.....Is that still a record? I remeber reading alex Karras' book where he described that kick. Karras said he and the other Lions didn't even really rush the Saints and pretty much just turned around to get a good view of this laughable 63 yard attempt. I think he used the word numb in describing his amazement that it went through. Spaw |

It really was a classic game, even if our British friends can't figure out how a team can score that many goals in a football game. And Louie...my coconut-frond hat is off to you, my friend. Nailed down and preserved in cyberspace! And Rick, if you stayed around for the saccharine post-game show, you'll know that it was Pat Summerall who kicked that field goal for the Giants. Subject: RE: BS: Do Patriots Have a Chance From: catspaw49 Date: 31 Jan 02 - 06:48 PM You're right of course Loop and it's the owners, us, the whole damn system and it is what it is..........But every now and then around here I go off on these rants while dreaming of times past. One of the nicer things is that I live close to a city with a minor league ball club and you can see a good game and have a fun night with the family and spend less than 50 bucks including gas, parking, food, and assorted ballpark junk. Additionally, there is someone who's giving away tickets for almost every game when a block is bought by some company. Last year we had free tickets to "Dime-A-Dog Night" and our two families went (4 adults, 4kids). We got there early and were able to upgrade to box seats, ate around 40 dogs, bought a couple of caps, bought drinks and some other munchies too, and went home after seeing a damn good ball game feeling great because the whole night for EIGHT people had cost about $65.00. Geeziz, I can't get a pair of decent Reds tickets for that. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Do Patriots Have a Chance From: LoopySanchez Date: 31 Jan 02 - 05:02 PM Spaw, I'm all for letting leagues tie their own ropes if they want to let salaries spiral out of control. But if owners are going to make big bucks selling advertising rights, luxury boxes, and team merchandise, I have no problem with players getting as big a slice of the pie as possible. Salaries will come down on their own in a hurry if people get fed up with paying $30 to park their car (da Bears), or $81.00 for a ticket (avg. price for a 'Skins ticket). They'll quit showing up, and the owners will cut costs to save their wallets. It hasn't happened yet, so more power to em' if they can find 80,000 people willing to turn over a Benjamin or two to enjoy a three hour footgall game eight Sundays a year. But as long as Jim Carrey, Ah-nuld, Julia, and Jack can make $20 million for a few month's work memorizing and reciting some lines, I have no problem if someone wants to pay Barry Bonds that much for a 162 game season, or if they want to pay Peyton Manning $7 million to play 16 games of football a year. When people stop coming to the games, those athletes will learn to live on less, or they'll learn to live on a LOT less selling shoes rather than endorsing them. |

Subject: RE: BS: Do Patriots Have a Chance From: JedMarum Date: 31 Jan 02 - 09:40 AM I like Flutie, Rick. He played in a league where he simply wasn't really big enough. He has contributed more to the first line of NFL QBs then most who do have the size and physical skills. It's true that he just cannot overcome his size to have had a long career, and the success he might otherwsie haev had - but he did much better then he should have been able to. Kinda like Spud Web. |
Subject: RE: BS: Do Patriots Have a Chance From: Rick Fielding Date: 31 Jan 02 - 01:09 AM Thread creep (no I don't mean you Spaw) The greatest moment I've ever had in the NFL (well on TV anyway) "The snow was coming down...BLANK lines up for the field goal......here's the kick...49 yards, and through the uprights. The GIANTS win! I was a little kid, but that kicker became my hero. anybody know who it was? Biggest disappointment....That little fucker Flutie really CAN'T pass over an NFL defensive line! (he was great in Toronto and Vancouver where the defensive lines are (on average) three inches shorter. Oh, he also had sure handed receivers on the teams he played for here...he didn't get a lot of help in San Diego...'specially from the running game. There...now I can never mention his name again as long as I live. Rick

Screw Art Modell for stealin' em' from Cleveland. Fir the ol bobert, it ain't about color, though. It's about football. Man, I can still see Ernest's fumble. But, man, could he ever run. I loved watching him after the Brown's traded him to Washington. But the Browns to me is a lot like the Washington Senators back when I was a kid. If you think that corporate America has a plan for ripping off Washington, just think back and think of BASEBALL ITSELF stole the Washington Senators, not once.... BUT TWICE!!!!! AND THAT IS THE TRUTH!!!! The second thief stole MY TEAM and moved it to Texas where it is known as the Texas Rangers, it's former owner... being none other than.....(drum roll...) Subject: RE: BS: Do Patriots Have a Chance From: catspaw49 Date: 30 Jan 02 - 06:48 PM I like the plan Loopy!! I think we could then do away with about half of the interminably long season along with a sizable number of teams. THEN we'd have a league that was once again small enough that only the very best would be playing. THEN we could impose some salary limits on it too. Give players a great retirement package and all, but cut the salaries from the ridiculous levels and then those who didn't want to play for say, $300,000 per year could sell Buicks instead. I propose we adopt the same plan for baseball and basketball and if the hockey or soccer leagues go nuts, we'll sit on their asses too. This would make tickets affordable and nobody's season would overlap on both sides. Glad I'm not king huh? I just get so disgusted with the whole thing though.................Sorry..Rant over. Spaw

Subject: RE: BS: Do Patriots Have a Chance From: LoopySanchez Date: 30 Jan 02 - 06:02 PM Quoth Spaw: "Once again though, these Patriots are simply lip-service liberals who maintain their vested interests when they could be taking a huge step forward in uncivil football rights..." What do you expect Spaw, After all, The Patriots are from the home state of lip-service liberalism--Taxachusetts! :>) (No, I'm not that dense, I get the parody... Hillarious stuff, Spaw!!!) However, if the NFL were a truly civilized league, they'd make sure that the Eagles make the Super Bowl regularly due to their status as a protected species, as would the Buffalo Bills. The Redskins would make it to compensate for their years of betrayal at the hands of the so-called "Patriots". The Chiefs would get the occasional free pass for the same reason. The The Steelers would need to be given a free pass once every four years too--After all, most steel workers are union members, and you'd hate for them to switch their voter support from the NFL party to another one. The 49ers would never go--after all, why reward people who mine for gold and destroy mother earth? The Cowboys would stay home every year as well--Punishment for their abuse of those poor innocent bovines that they round up to be slaughtered. |
