From: CapriUni
Date: 27 Jan 02 - 11:12 PM

The first part, here, is now over 100 messages, so I figured it's start a new half.

And for the most ambitious among us (the talented or the fearless) can we turn this into a song challege?

Well, I'm gonna try, anyway!

Write a song using as many of these sayings as you can.

Before moving on to THE CONTINUATION THREAD (link above), a couple of comments on posts in this thread:

GUEST,Russ, I believe it was Yogi Berra who (first) said, What is "ado" and why shouldn't there be any further of it?

My great aunt used to say someone was "as nervous as a fart in a hot skillet."

"It ain't over till it's over." Yogi Berra "When you come to a fork in the road, take it." (also Yogi Berra)

A saying that is made better by its context (Printed around the circumfrence of Pete Seeger's banjo head):

"This machine surrounds hate, and forces it to surrender."

The best one I know's from central Europe somewhere: An insult is a cup of poison, anyone can hand it to you but only you can drink it. I got that from a bohunk in Texas many years ago when there were still towns that only spoke German or Czech.

Ooh, Misophist! You're right -- that is a great one.

Having seen how easily flamers and nasty trolls[*] can take over a newsgroup, I also think it's a great saying for cyber culture...

[*] as opposed to Pro-Fun Trolls who go from newsgroup to newsgroup spreading playful ideas, and inciting thoughtful commentary... or at least, we try ;-)

Both of these were favourites of an elderly relative, but I think his best was,
"Never let your braces dangle in the shite"

LOL, Beadie, LOL.

My maternal grandmother's " Ach your're neither sugar nor salt, you won't melt " should you complain about getting wet in any situation.

From the same school, "Ach it's far aff your backside, you'll no sit on it " which was used almost indescrimintly, regardless of occasion.

" May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits"

About as useful as.......
a chocolate teapot
a one legged man in an arse kicking contest

About as welcome as.....
a ham sandwich at a bar mitzvah
a fart in a spacesuit
nettles at a nudist colony
grit in your vaseline

"He who lives by the pork sword, shall die by the pork sword" ( By Me! )

Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.

"Soon we'll be sliding down the razor blade of life!" Tom Lehrer

My grandmother--Come on out from back down up in under there. (She has a way with prepositions.) My other grandmother used to talk about ne'er do wells who went around "drinkin and swarpin," but my mother couldn't tell me what "swarpin" was. I need to know, hope to preserve the lost art of swarpin. Because, as Mae West said "whenever I have to choose between two evils, I take the one I haven't tried yet." A good man is hard to define. To each his own, or it's equivalent. Conceptual artist Jenny Holtzer had a bunch of sayings on posters and things, and I once won a bet that I could re-arrange them into better, truer, sayings. A few mixed sayings were "sex differences are nothing to be proud of" and "the land is living on borrowed time". Yesterday someone asked about the phrase "spooning" and my friend John told him it just meant snuggling front to back. Later I explained that that's what we told John, because he's a little young yet, but spooning is actually... well, think of the dirtiest thing you can. It's still a little dirtier than that. I'm afraid it actually involves a spoon. But don't tell John. I like to tell my kids warped versions of sayings so that they will hate me for it later. My daughter wonders why I work at night, I tell her "because Rome wasn't built in the day". fred

"It's a poor workman who blames his tools."

Someone says, "Take it easy." I say, "I'll take it any way I can get it!"

Someone says: "How goes it?" I say, "It doesn't go; ya gotta push it!" (A whole philosophy of life there, if you think about it.)
