John Nesbitt, I used to go to the Emerald Isle Pub in Chicago, way back around 1972. Tony loved the Moody Blues then, Isn't Life Strange. I doubt very much he'd recall me, but tell him Susan from Chicago said hi anyway. Hope you are all well. Thank you.

Saw them last night (10/10/15) at Donovan's in Springfield. They sounded just as good as they ever have. They must have a lot of followers as that's the most crowded I have seen Donovan's other than St. Patrick's Day.

Wow. The record that got me into ithis music in the early 1980s was a cheap double compilation LP called All The Folk That Fits, and there was one track by The Bards on it, Lanigan's Ball. I can still hear my two little kids singing along, "I stepped out and I stepped in again..." They're in their mid to late 30s now!   :-(

You can catch Jimmy at Donovan's and the John Boyle O'Reilly club in Springfield and at the Sons of Erin in Westfield. I try to never miss a show, he's voice is so hypnotic!

I know its a little late in writing here but I just saw this page, Jimmy McArdle and Barney McElhone play almost every Saturday night at Donovans Irish Pub in Springfield MA. Jimmy McArdle plays with Barney and sometimes another musician at the John Boyle O'Reilly Club once a month in Springfield, MA. John Nesbit does not live in this area but plays at Donovans once in a while. I'm sure that Jimmy McArdle still has or can get you a cd. They are $10 each. You can email me for more info at angeladele@verizon.net.

The Bards are doing a reunion show this Saturday night, January 31st, at the Olde Irish Alehouse in Dedham, MA. Should be a great show. The Alehouse is owned by one of the band members. They opened the place with a show back in the 1970s and now they're doing it again.

Barry, I don't know anything about the Bards as a group, but we got to know John and Jeannie when they performed at the Inn at Long Trail, near Killington, VT, on a regular basis. They were then living in Rangely, ME. We lost track of them, but I think they have moved back to the greater Boston area.

They performed as a duo under the name, "Glenshane." They put out at least one tape that we have (this was back when small private recordings were done on cassette.)

Peter.

If it's the same Bards that Gary T's refering to, John Nesbitt got married way back to a great singer (Jeannie), got family. Haven't seen them in years but last I heard John & Jean were preforming together (which they've been doing for close to 20 yrs) somewhere in the wilds of Maine. He may have done a reunion thing with them but not in agages as a group. The rest have been playing the Boston area over the years but haven't heard anything of them for quite a while. Barry

The second McElhone (Ollie) is a soloist who does Irish folk. He filled in with the Bards briefly although he wasn't a founding member. The current lineup includes all origional members. I think Ollie will be opening for the Bards in Philly (at least).

The Bards I heard consisted of Martin McElhone, Tony Hegarty, Jimmy McArdle, and John Nesbitt. I would say they're the same band NoMattch was referring to, although I don't know anything about a second Mr. McElhone. My sister had heard them at Matt Kane's in Washington, D.C., and was excited when she saw they were playing at The Irish Brigade in Kansas City in the late 70's. I remember their saying that they had been doing rock and roll at some time but came back to folk music because it meant more to them.

I have no clue as to whether this might be the same group mariner mentioned.

The Bards, as in Dermot O'Leary and The Bards are a big cabaret attraction here in Ireland and have been for many years, and to the best of my knowledge have never broken up.Are we talking about the same "Irish band"here?.

Hi Gary,

I found out that they are back together and doing a US tour. The closest gig to me is at a place called Brittinghams near Philadelphia, PA on Feb 28th. I know saw on the web that they have dates scheduled in Mass. I haven't seen any other dates yet.

Sorry I don't have any current info. I remember seeing them twenty-some years ago when they played in an Irish pub in Kansas City. Bought a couple of their albums. It would be nice to see them again, so I hope they are back together and touring.

Hi all,

I heard from some friends that the Irish band "The Bards" are back together for the first time in about 20 years. However, I haven't seen any advertising for them. Does anyone know if they're actually touring? I've always wanted to see them but I've only ever heard recordings. I have seen the McElhone brothers (from the bards) play in Philadelphia but to see the Bards would be excelent. Any info would be greatly appreciated...
