I will be listening attentively. I had heard, (and I hope it was and is just an urban myth) that Johnny Winter was living rough and sleeping out on the beach here in Miami.

Murray,

Johnny sure has had his share of demons over the years. I have heard reports that are similar to you the ones that you describe, although I never heard them to quite the extent that you are describing. Most have more to do with his health. I do know that I saw hiem a few years agao and he was much slower moving and lacked the ligthning speed that he had when I'd seen him on previous occassions. But, he is now nearly completely blind and is almost sixty. I get a sense that the reports that you've heard are false. He is still married, still recording and touring (although a very limited schedule).

I have always respected him for turning hsi back on the the Rock Guitar God role that the industry was trying to force him into so that he could return to his real love, the Blues.

God bless him, he's certainly done his bit.

I've got some of his live stuff on tape, and what impresses me most is the feeling that the whole band is working together and actually listening to each other.

As you say, he could have been a real guitar god if he'd wanted to, you can only admire him for sticking to the blues.

I remember an article in one of the guitar mags. Johnny had just produced the album 'Hard Again' for Muddy Waters.

At the end of the interview Muddy says "That's my son."

What else can you say?

I obviously can't listen to the 'phone in from the U.K. but I hope there'll be some way of getting the questions and answers from the site.

Thanks for the thread Steve.......

Latimer, a question for you, sort of related but not related....

On Mean Town Blues, live version, how might one tell who is playing which guitar part? Rick Derringer and Johnny Winter trade licks throughout the whole jam, but it would be nice to know who is playing what. Any suggestions?

My take on Meantown Blues (one of, if not my favourite live electric pieces ever) is that Johnny does most of the playing. I think that Johnny's playing is the cleaner sounding of the two. The muddier sounding parts are Derringer, he seems to be using more distortion than Winter. I love the drumming in that version.
