Subject: RE: ADD:Hail, Glorious St. Patrick From: MarcB Date: 12 Mar 98 - 08:08 PM Alison, Alice I have St. Patrick's Breastplate as Hymn 370 in the 1982 Episcopal Hymnal. The part you recited above(Christ before me, etc.) is sandwiched between the "I bind unto myself today" verses to a different tune and key. Makes for a great piece. I assume you have this so I'm not transcribing full lyrics. Let me know if you want them. I actually use the breastplate as personal ritual and found it quite effective as a ward. I love the lyrics which began this thread, thank you Alice and I will add them to my list of faith stuff. I like the Slane tune with them as well. Here's to ya. Marc |
Subject: RE: ADD:Hail, Glorious St. Patrick From: Alice Date: 12 Mar 98 - 06:37 PM thanks, alison, I was getting "K error" on the first one in K:C, the one above you posted was K:D. I will try that and see if I can get it to play. Glad Murray pointed me toward the Mac version of abc. alice |
Subject: Tune Add: ST PATRICK'S BREASTPLATE or CLONMACNOISE From: alison Date: 12 Mar 98 - 06:30 PM Hi alice, No idea at all, Alan of Oz is the one to ask if you've got problems. The breastplate bit is actually sung to the tune "Clonmacnoise".

Subject: Lyr Add: ST. PATRICK'S BREASTPLATE From: Alice Date: 12 Mar 98 - 09:27 AM Although tunes may be similar and shuffled around to different sets of lyrics, "St. Patrick's Breastplate" is actually a prayer (supposedly written by St. Patrick himself) that have been used with different tunes. The song words I posted above are from 1920, by Sister Agnes. The prayer is called a 'breastplate' because it is meant to be a 'sheild' from harm. There are different versions of the prayer, especially when it is used with a tune, but here is one:

Subject: Tune Add: ST PATRICK and SLANE From: alison Date: 12 Mar 98 - 01:27 AM Hi Alice, The tune is called "St Patrick", I always knew it as "St Patrick's breastplate." I think the words fit even better to another old Irish tune "Slane" so here are both of them.... see what you think.

Subject: Lyr Add: HAIL, GLORIOUS SAINT PATRICK From: Alice Date: 11 Mar 98 - 08:30 PM This is from a 1947 edition (with dog-chewed off cover) of the St. Gregory Hymnal and Choir Book. HAIL, GLORIOUS SAINT PATRICK © 1920, words, Sister Agnes Ancient Irish Melody
1. Hail, glorious Saint Patrick, dear Saint of our isle!
2. Hail, glorious Saint Patrick, thy words were once strong,
3. In the war against sin, in the fight for the faith,
4. Thy people, now exiles on many a shore,
5. Ever bless and defend the sweet land of our birth,
Whenever I can figure out how to use the Mac abc software (Barfly) I will post the tune. May not be by the 17th. |
