The lyrics of this song don't seem to be in DT or Forum, and I couldn't find them via Google either. Who can help?

Thanks, Sorcha. I'm no help on this because I don't know the song/tune. The friend who asked me insists there must be words as a German folk band translated them. Maybe they just took the tune and wrote the German words for it?

Damfinknow, skw. If you can't find it and I can't find it, it's probably not on the web. I did find out which album it's on. Would that help?

Susanne (skw)-- I kind of doubt if this is what you seek, especially given Sorcha's info; but, just in case -- I have on a Makem & Clancy (not Clannad) album a song by J.B. Goodenough entitled: "The Parting Song (Journey's End)". I would've assumed it's well-known and the lyrics would be around in many listings; but maybe not?? (This is NOT the old Clancy Brothers standard "The Parting Glass" by the way; different song altogether.) If this is, or could be, the one, post here again & I'll be happy to transcribe the lyrics. -Joe in Connecticut

Susanne (skw) - Well, having just shamefacedly gathered from the Mudcat Newcomer's Guide that people should go ahead & post the damn lyrics requested instead of fuh-tootsing around about it (as me sainted mother used to say, God rest her); and having searched the DT without results for "The Parting Song", which is apparently an alternate title for "Journey's End" --- here it is, as lifted from www.makem.com (forgive me Tommy)(and I hope I can this line-break business right!) If this is it, great; if not, hopefully you & others may enjoy it anyway. I recently nominated it in the "Saddest Songs Part II" thread herein. --Joe in Connecticut (again)

THE PARTING SONG (Journey's End)

The fire is out, the moon is down
The parting glass is dry and done
And I must go and leave this town
Before the rising of the sun
And long's the road and far's the mile
Before I rest my soul again
With girls that weep and girls that smile
And all the words and ways of men

For some there are, who may not bide
But wander to the journey's end
Nor take a girl to be a bride
Nor keep a man to be a friend
And when I'm done with wandering
I'll sit beside the road and weep
For all the songs I did not sing
And promises I did not keep

- words and music by J.B. Goodenough

Joe in C. - many thanks, but you're right in suspecting this is not the song I'm after. It was mentioned in a couple of threads, but I don't think the lyrics are in the forum yet, so thanks again.

Meanwhile, a German folkie has found the Clannad lyrics for me, even though the track on 'Macalla' is indeed instrumental. On the principle Joe has just set out again, here they are: JOURNEY'S END
(???)

Blue waves a-rolling
Visions in my mind
Of a strange voice calling
"Journey's at an end;
Journey's at an end!"

"Hear the anchor sinking,
Voices ringing clear,
A welcome from my kindred,
And friends I love so dear...
And friends I love so dear."

"Lost springs are fading;
They sweep across the vale,
And with oceans of meadows
To bring me back again,
To bring me back again."

Long have I traveled
In storm and sun and rain
And it's homeward sailing
Journey's at an end,
Journey's at an end!"

Found by Rainer Koester on this site, which I haven't yet looked at.

Susanne (skw)- Very glad you got the right lyrics; & thank-you for the thank-you! People on this Forum are nice, sez I; even to inexpert Newbies. (Mudkittens? Uhh...no.)

Those Clannad lyrics are beautiful btw.

I think of (last verse, The Grey Funnel Line)(am I committing the dreaded Thread-Creep here?):

So I'll pass the time like some machine
Until the blue ocean turns to green
Then I'll dance on down that walk ashore
And I'll sail the Grey Funnel Line no more.

Just one more day, on the Grey Funnel Line.

Joe, I love that term: Mudkitten! If you are one, grow up fast and join as a member. All it takes is to enter your details, read the FAQ thread at the top and join in the fun (you can even P(rivate) M(essage) others as a member!).

Till last week I didn't even know there were English words to this song. The German words have long been the Schleswig-Holstein [that's the Northern tip of Germany] Folk Association anthem.

Susanne (skw): Well thanks again. I've been thinkin' about joining; but to be honest, I'm a wee bit intimidated by the vast folkie erudition of the folkie-folks here. You're all so nice; but you all KNOW so damn much! (Schleswig-Holstein Folk Association, to be sure to be sure!) Me, I don't know from the northern tip of Da Bronx.(Well OK, I guess I do---it's Riverdale--- but I just wanted to use dat definite article "da". Duh.) Oh, I'm familiar with (and love) a certain slice of the material; but outside of that, I get a little lost. Then again, quite a few Regulars here seem to share my Irish/Celtic obsession AHEM nowait I mean, cultural orientation; and I do like to learn new stuff, too. Well I'll mull it some more. Appreciate your encouragement. Ohyeah---Full Disclosure Dept: my only "instrument" is the tin whistle. Disqualified?? (I'd mention I play it badly too, but that's redundant; hee hee) And as to "Mudkitten": glad you like the term, but at 54-come-Valentine's-Day, it feels kinda funny on me. (On the other paw: "Mew! Mew!") -- Joe in Connecticut

Susanne - I read with interest about the German words in existence. Being a German expatriate folkie in Californis, I'd love it if you could post or PM them to me.
Thanks in advance,
Michael

Subject: Lyr Add: LAND IN SICHT
From: Susanne (skw)

Joe - mull away! But please take into account that a) my only instrument is the CD player, b) my only interest is songs, c) I never have been and never will be seen outside Europe (or anywhere that involves flying), and d) practice makes perfect - I joined the Mudcat almost five years ago, and I've certainly learned more from it about folk music than from anywhere else. This is a place to learn and grow and hand on what you've learned. Nobody's going to show off by putting you down (well - very few, I should say ...), and if they do, there are more than enough others who won't like it and will say so. You're certainly welcome, whatever!

Michael, here you are. It's a great song for mass singing and was popularised by the German folk band Liederjan.

LAND IN SICHT

Lang war die Reise, holt die Segel dicht
Bald liegt das Schiff im Hafen, es ist Land in Sicht Es ist Land in Sicht

Chorus: the same on 'la la la ...'

Thanks, Susanne, that's lovely, if a bit clichéd. BTW, what is the current state of folk music in Germany? Has anyone rescued our traditional canon from the Heinos I remember (I've been gone since 79)?

Tschüs,
Michael

Well, yes, its popularity is certainly not due to the lyrics! As to your questions, we had a fairly long discussion on the topic in these threads German folk music and German folk music II recently. One of these days I'll revive them and post the full (?) lyrics of 'Dat du min Leevsten buest', as promised! But not yet.

Use a keyboard synth, a vocal processor that lets you multiply your voice, and lots of reverb.

Or were you asking for the chords?

;-) Michael

Is the music a traditional piece?
