On the Stars in my Crown CD by Lynn Heraud & Keith Kendrick there is a song entitled One Starry Night. This has got to be my favourite track on the CD and I love the lyrics, but in the last verse there is a sentence I cannot understand - it sounds like "Oh Molly bawn estorian come and lay me down". I guessed 'bawn' which is the Irish for pretty but I may be completely wrong. A previous verse mentions 'boreen' so there is definitely an Irish link. Does anyone know this song and if so do you know the line I'm having trouble with? Any suggestions welcome...

Liam Weldon(RIP) learned this song from gypsies who camped near his house. "estorian" should be "a stor".

Slight correction after listening to the record. It is the diminutive "a storeen" little treasure. The song came from a traveller called Mary Dukes in the early sixties.

And "bawn", Arnie , is Irish for white, or in this case I'd say "Fair". Liam Weldon had one hell of a voice and a great collection of songs.

Theses words were given to me by a friend but I've never posted anything before so I'm hoping for the best.

STARRY NIGHT

It's many the mile love with you I've travelled
Many's the hour with you I've spent
I dreamed you were my love forever
But now I find love you were only lent

One starry night as I lay sleeping
One starry night as I lay in bed
I dreamed I heard wagon wheels a-creeping
When I awoke my own love had fled

I've searched the highways likewise the byways
I've searched the boreens the camping places too
I have enquired of all our people
Have they tide or tidings or signs of you

I'm drunk today but I'm oft-times sober
A constant rover from town to town
And when I'm dead and my trials are ended
My Molly bawn a toreen come lay me down

HTML line breaks added. --JoeClone, 2-Feb-02.

There are always a few different words here and there to these lyrics ... but your last line should surely read "Molly bawn a stoírín (a storeen) come lay me down." Hope this helps.
