Subject: All In The April Evening April Airs From: Dimple Date: 30 Jan 02 - 05:19 PM hello, a bit late, but Happy New Year to Every body on Mudcat.Still in the doldrums up here in Cumbria,but we are getting out to one or two sing -songs.At the moment we are trying to find the words for the above song which we know is often sung in church at easter,it seems many years ago, but we did once know these words \we would be extremely grateful if any one knows them . All in the April Evening April Airs were Abroad I saw the sheep with their lambs as they passed me by on the road . That is as near as we can remember, If this message is a bit disjointed I have just had to have my very favorite old horse put to sleep tonight.I bred him and have had him 32 years .He galloped into his stable ,slipped and damaged his spine so badly he would have been paralysed him within a couple of hours hour,so we had to put him to sleep. please excuse any lack of manners Dimplydoo. |
Subject: Lyr Add: ALL IN THE APRIL EVENING From: kytrad (Jean Ritchie) Date: 30 Jan 02 - 05:35 PM I sang this in church choir when I was in college (1944). ALL IN THE APRIL EVENING All in the April evening; April airs were abroad. The sheep with their little lambs passed me by on the road The sheep with their little lambs passed me by on the road All in the April evening I thought on the Lamb of God.
The lambs were weary and crying with a weak, human cry
But for the Lamb, the Lamb of God, up on the hilltop green I know the tune, but can't put it down for you...perhaps some other Catters will do that. So sad saying goodbye to your horse- they can be such good friends! But I'm sure you gave him a good and happy life. Take care, Jean |

Arthur Quiller-Couch, ed. 1919. The Oxford Book of English Verse: 1250–1900. |
Katharine Tynan Hinkson. b. 1861 |
877. Sheep and Lambs |
ALL in the April morning,
April airs were abroad;
The sheep with their little lambs
Pass'd me by on the road.
The sheep with their little lambs | 5 |
Pass'd me by on the road;
All in an April evening | |
I thought on the Lamb of God.
The lambs were weary, and crying
With a weak human cry, | 10 |
I thought on the Lamb of God
Going meekly to die. | |
Up in the blue, blue mountains
Dewy pastures are sweet:
Rest for the little bodies, | 15 |
Rest for the little feet.
Rest for the Lamb of God | |
Up on the hill-top green,
Only a cross of shame | |
Two stark crosses between. | 20 |
All in the April evening,
April airs were abroad;
I saw the sheep with their lambs,
And thought on the Lamb of God. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: All In The April Evening April Airs From: Dimple Date: 30 Jan 02 - 07:28 PM Thanks for the quick response to my request re lyrics,It's amazing how well the words come back when they are in front of one's eyes.Thanks about my old horse,he didn't deserve to go like he did,he lost his friend 35yrs on Boxing Day,but was getting on well with a new friend and looked very good for quite a few years to come.He's the end of an era for me, and it's only starting to hit me now at 1 27.am,as it is my husband who is absolutly distraught,despite him being a farmer, and this year being used to death on the farm. |

I never realised this choir was not only started in 1901 by Hugh Roberton but voted to dissolve itself 50 years later when Sir Hugh, as he was by then, decided to step down from the rostrum. |
