Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: Mrs.Duck Date: 08 Apr 02 - 06:16 PM The problem with a ceilidh as we found last year is that apart from those playing in the band most of the others at the gathering were not interested. If it hadn't been for the two local morris teams invited to swell numbers there wouldn't have been any dancers. |

Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: GUEST,Bagpuss at work Date: 04 Apr 02 - 09:17 AM When did it change from being 24th-25th May? Now I am confused... |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: Mrs.Duck Date: 04 Apr 02 - 09:15 AM Sorry Ringer the date is the 3rd - 5th May and the George and Dragon is in West Haddlesey North Yorkshire (UK). I will organise maps and directions nearer the time. |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: Mrs.Duck Date: 04 Apr 02 - 09:10 AM The George and Dragon does not have separate rooms and was not therefore our original choice. However whist it may lack some of the facilities of the Jug it more than makes up for that with the welcome of Graham and Wendy the landlord and landlady. They are 100% behind us and will bend over backwards to make it a successful weekend! We will all have to be sensible about the song versus music thing which I wish didn't occur. To make sure everyone has a good time I intend to be a bit bossy (so out of character) and will appoint people to wear the hat and take charge of various parts of the weekend so there will be singarounds, there will be sessions but for a lot of the time (especially in the evening) there will be a mixture whether that is in a floor spot situation or just see what happens. Anyone who has visited the Kingston in Hull will know that this can work so long as people are prepared to let it. |

Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: Skipjack K8 Date: 04 Apr 02 - 08:46 AM Is there a separate room/bar for a tune only session, or is it a Kim Howells nightmare? Don't get me wrong, some of my best friends are folk singers, and I think their musical proclivities are equally valid as straight musicians, but I wouldn't want it to get round that I partake in any singles song orgies. Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: Geoff the Duck Date: 28 Mar 02 - 08:54 AM The George & Dragon is in West Haddlesey. Heading North on the A19 from the M62 , you would turn LEFT instead of right at the crossroads near the Jug. It is about a mile down that road. |

Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: Mrs.Duck Date: 27 Mar 02 - 08:44 PM Fingers crossed, everybody, the landlord at the George & Dragon, where the session is now held on alternate Wednesdays, has expressed great interest in hosting the gathering. There is a piece of land adjoining thr pub, which is owned by the council, but has been used by the pub for events such as fireworks etc. and provided they have no objection to our using the land for that weekend, the gathering will take place on the weekend before the Jubilee bank holiday (24/25 May) as planned. |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: Mrs.Duck Date: 19 Mar 02 - 07:29 PM Still not organised a new venue yet but it will definitely NOT be the Jug who have made it clear that musicians are not really welcome! |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: Mrs.Duck Date: 09 Mar 02 - 07:55 AM All may not be lost yet. Discussions will take place with various people this weekend and the outcome will be posted as soon as. Ther WILL be a Yorkshire gathering that weekend and it may yet still be at the Jug but until I know for certain I'll keep quiet! |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: Tig Date: 08 Mar 02 - 04:46 PM When i posted the above the spirits in the air hadn't brought the last three postings, especially the one from Mrs Duck. Not sure now what is going to happen. Very sad :-((( |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: brid widder Date: 08 Mar 02 - 01:12 PM I went to the Saltersgate by public transport....the bus from York stopped outside....no problem. |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: IvanB Date: 08 Mar 02 - 12:17 PM I sure hope something will happen on that weekend, as I was looking forward to meeting numerous UK Cats. The Jug was an almost ideal location as we would be staying only 40 miles away. If it's further away from us, I suspect I'll still plan on making it, even if only for the Saturday. I note The Jug's website still touts the Wednesday evening sessions and its large contingent of Mudcatters. It also makes mention of the number who attended last years do. Seems if they're becoming less 'music friendly' they might want to change their website. |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: Geoff the Duck Date: 08 Mar 02 - 11:34 AM The Saltersgate is an excellent pub for a gathering. The only problem is that it is not in the most easily accessible spot for those restricted to public transport. I have seen New Year in on at least two occasions at the Saltersgate, and it has sufficient rooms for singing sessions, music only sessions and a mixture to take place without one interfering with the others. Quack Geoff |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: Tig Date: 08 Mar 02 - 06:57 AM I'm really looking forward to the weekend and meeting up with (new) old friends. Let me know if you need help planning it. |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: BanjoRay Date: 07 Mar 02 - 07:36 PM The beer at the Legendary Saltersgate Tavern is also excellent. This is where it is (I hope) where it says 'PH'. Cheers

Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: brid widder Date: 07 Mar 02 - 07:14 PM I don't know if this is any use but in September I went along to a little 'do' in 'The Legendary Saltersgate Tavern' at the hole of Horcum...near Thornton le Dale. The Landlord there was VERY welcoming and I am sure would welcome such a gathering...he does B&B...very good grub and has a good campsite (free) with a barbeque...a fantastic spot too in the Yorkshire Moors within sight of Fylingdales. I don't know how to do clicky thingys but I'm sure a search would find the details.. |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: Mrs.Duck Date: 07 Mar 02 - 05:58 PM Sadly since I refreshed this thread earlier this evening I have been informed that the landlord has been making musicians feel very unwelcome in the pub on the Wednesday session and therefore I will not be organising the gathering this year. This is not to say it will not take place but it is looking unlikely. Apparently musicians were asked not to play as people were in the bar eating (8.30ish) The diners were not approached to see if they had any objections. The landlord had already intimated to me that gatherers would not be welcome in the pub until food was no longer being served ('they don't want violin bows in their ears when they're eating')and when I pointed out that many may well be eating all he could say was that they aren't there every day!! I don't think he realises just what a profitable weekend it was for Syd and Val last year but I can't go ahead with organising an event where we are at best tolerated and at worst left out in the cold! I understand some people have begun to talk about holding the event at another pub but I have not been party to those discussions so unless someone else takes up this the Yorkshire gathering is off. Jane - feeling very sad and let down! |

Subject: RE: Yorkshire Gathering 2002? From: mouldy Date: 11 Feb 02 - 02:46 AM Remember,Jez, that Hensall didn't get flooded last time, apart from a 2 foot deep patch downhill from me at the crossroads when the beck back-flowed with all the water from the flood plains. Mind you, now that those who "know what they are doing" have channelled it into a culvert and filled up its channel... Les, since Val has left there's no cow pie any more! By the way folks, I had a letter from Syd and Val last week, and their new enterprise is to be called "Chews and Booze". Andrea
