Subject: Song in 'Big Hand for a Little Lady'
From: Fiolar

Can any 'catter help with a song which has me stumped for ages. Called (I believe) "Rosie, You are My Posy" it cropped up several times in that great comedy Western "Big Hand For a Little Lady" (AKA "Big Deal in Dodge City")starring Henry Fonda, Joanne Woodward,Burgess Merdith and Jason Robards among others. It was the favourite of the "doc" character played by Burgess. Would love to know if it has been recorded and by whom. Thanks.

Hi, Fiolar.......

Great movie, and a wonderful Burgess Meredith character!

The song is "Ma Blushin' Rosie (Ma Posie Sweet)", Al Jolsen had it as a hit in 1946, but it's much older than that. I'm not sure who sang it in the movie, but I well up when I see Burgess listening to her at the end.

Here are some actual recordings:

    Al Jolson:

    Norman Brooks (a Jolsen mimic):

Ma Blushin' Rosie (Ma Posie Sweet) - Al Jolson
Written by John A. Stromberg and Edgar Smith, 1900
Published by M. Witmark & Sons

    Rosie, you are my posie,
    You are my heart's bouquet.
Come out, here in the moonlight,
    There's something, sweet love,
    I want to say.

    Your honey, boy, I'm waitin'
    Your ruby lips to greet.
    Don't be so captivatin',
    My blushin' Rosie,
    My posie sweet.

There's a little bunch of sweetness
That I long to call my bride,
And believe me, I'm not happy,
'Less my baby's by my side.

Her baptismal name is Rosie,
But she puts the rose to shame,
And 'most every night,
You'll hear me call her name.

Professor!
I'm gonna sing about my Rosie!

    Rosie, you are my posie,
    You are my heart's bouquet.
Come out here in the moonlight,
    There's something, sweet love,
I'm gonna sing about my baby!

Your honey, your boy, I'm waitin',
Your ruby, your lips to greet
    Don't be so captivatin',
    My blushin' Rosie,
    My posie sweet.
