So true, I.S. -

It's an incredible CD by a marvelously talented young lady TOO SOON taken from us...

I heard her father interviewed on a local radio station last year; they concluded the radio spot with Eva's unmatchable rendition of "Over the Rainbow"... I was literally captivated, and ordered the CD that morning...

It's been said 'that she's singing in a Heavenly Choir now'... I can only agree that her voice would certainly bring a smile to God's face...

Murph

Mike Regenstreif ended today's Folk Roots/Folk Branches with Eva's version of "Over the Rainbow." He referred to it as "exquisite."

This thread didn't need to go under the "BS" label--it's about music!

I have "Time after Time" which is also excellent. A very wonderful singer who was taken from us at such a young age.

Best regard,

My wife saw something about her on TV one time and I heard about her here, so we bought on of her CDs. We now have all of them and at least one of them gets played at least every other day. Even my 18-year-old rap fan daughter likes to sing along.

Eva was definitely taken away from us too early.

I absolutely love 'Autumn Leaves' on the Songbird CD. Wonder if there's a history of that song on here somewhere.

Also enjoy 'Wade in the Water' and 'Wayfaring Stranger'. Time After Time is a great collection too.

I do try to sing along, but she is so extemporaneous it's difficult.

Gonna try to pick up the rest of her CDs when I have the money...

Seems a shame that this thread had to start with a BS. The thing that gets me about Eva Cassidy is that she is total "class" if you know what I mean.

Allan; I do apologize about that but as i wasn't asking a specific question I really didn't know where to put the thread. No slighting of the lady was intended and if taken so, you all have my abject and humble apologies. Kindest regards, neil

A really nice bio written by Joel Siegel here.

One of the only female vocalists that affects me on such a profound emotional level, that tears stream down my face when I listen to anything by her (in a good way *G*)-especially her versions of Blue Skies and Fields of Gold. God has many voices. Eva was definitely one them.

A cynical note here - I had never heard of Eva Cassidy until after her death. I guess it's part of the music industry grind - that someone with talent doesn't get much promotion until after they're dead. Now that he's dead, people are promoting Peter Bellamy's work; Jim Croce's record sales after his death far exceeded those while he was alive; guitarists are falling over themselves to record Nic Jones arrangements now that he's unable to play himself, etc, etc, etc. Where were Eva's friends in the music biz that are now pushing her work when she was alive?

All of these people were immensely talented in their lifetimes (or healthy days, in Nic's case) but overlooked or ignored. Is there a special cachet that accrues when a performer is no longer around above and beyond what his or her actual talents were? Perhaps its because the musician isn't here to have good days and bad days, transcendant performances and average ones and plain sloppy ones. People fixate on the melodrama in the "tragedy of untimely death" and lose a sense of perspective. I guess I just get weary of people gushing about the newest dead musical genius that we all somehow missed in their lifetime.

It's Monday, and I'm crabby.

lamarca, get hold of a copy of Eva's biography (also called Songbird). An extremely talented artist and musician as well as having that beautiful voice.

She was painfully shy but extremely determined to do the music she wanted and not what some record company thought she be.

The book gives the impression she would not have been comfortable as the big star but we are really lucky that her friends gave her access to recording time or we may never have the record of her work that we have now.

Cheers Gary

Lamarca, You bring up excellent points. Wish I had heard of Eva before she passed on. I was unaware Peter Bellamy was dead. I have a copy of his Barracks Room Ballads on vinyl that I got years ago when I was stationed in Virginia Beach and hadn't seen anything by him since (This was 1987)I was buying Croce's stuff before he died but he wasn't as you point out getting a hell of a lot of air time. kindest regards, Neil
