Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Life gets tedious, don't it From: Mrrzy Date: 04 Feb 02 - 12:54 PM Had this by Doc Watson, as Life gets Teachous, don't it, or something. Took me years to figure out that teachous is just another form of Tedious... I thought it was "teach-ous" as in, it will teach you lessons, like the dog too lazy to get off the thorn he's lying on, howling... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Life gets tedious, don't it From: Sandy Paton Date: 04 Feb 02 - 11:05 PM So do I, Kendall. It works awfully well with the downeast flavor of your recitation. It's another Carson Robison product, isn't it? (The song, that is, not your speech.) Sandy (stealing time from real work) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Life gets tedious, don't it From: Sandy Paton Date: 06 Feb 02 - 03:23 AM No, Kendall, I didn't, although he lived over in Pleasant Valley, NY, not far from here. I sang one of his songs at a neighbor's social gathering some years ago, and one of the guests, a retired doctor who lived just up the road from Folk-Legacy's barn, was delighted to hear it. Turns out he had been the pediatrician for Robison's kids before he retired. Made me regret not getting to know him earlier. Sandy |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Life gets tedious, don't it From: InOBU Date: 06 Feb 02 - 06:49 AM I heard the Doc Watstson verson oh... twenty years ago maybe and the chorus, the sun goes up the sun goes down, hands of the clock spin round and round, ain't life tedious, really stuck with me... kinda like the Dick Gregrory Kent State speach... I have to click the wee clicky and see what the rest was... cheers, Larry |
Subject: Lyr Add: LIFE GETS TEEJUS, DON'T IT? From: Steve Parkes Date: 06 Feb 02 - 09:19 AM The version I remember (and I forget who by; he was never very big in the UK) goes like this: The sun comes up and the sun goes down, The hands on the clock go round and round. I just get up and it's time to lay down … Life gets teejus, don't it? My shoe's untied, but I don't care, I don't figure on goin' nowhere; I'd have to wash and comb my hair … That's just wasted effort. Water in the well get lower and lower, Can't take a bath in a month or more; But I've heard it said--and it's true, I'm sure-- That too much bathing will weaken you. Danged ol' mule, he must be sick. I jabbed him in the rump with a pin on a stick: He hunched his back, but he wouldn't kick; Something cock-eyed somewhere. Hound dog's howling so forlorn, Laziest dawg that ever was born: He's howlin' 'cause he's settin' on a thorn; Just too tired to move over. The cow's gone dry and the hens won't lay, And the fish quit bitin' last Saturday; Troubles pile up day by day … And now I'm gettin' dandruff. Roof's a-leakin' and the chimney leans, There's a hole in the seat of my old blue jeans; Now I've et the last of the pork an' beans … Just can't depend on nothin'. There's a mouse chawin' at the pantry door, He's been at it now for a month or more. When he gets through he'll sure be sore-- There ain't a darn thing in there. Debts and taxes, griefs and woes, Aches and miseries, so it goes; And now I'm getting a cold in my nose … Life gets tasteless, don't it? If anyone wants to make further corrections, I'd be grateful. I must finish learning it well enough to perform. Steve |

Old Brown mule... It's been so long ago, I cant be sure, but, I think I learned this from Carson Robison himself.(a recording) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Life gets tedious, don't it From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 07 Aug 08 - 11:00 AM If memory serves, Tex Williams, a late 1940's singer who was more famous for singing Merle Travis' "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette in 1947," had an early version that recieved a lot of air play around 1948-50 or so. I remember seeing his western swing band at the old Knott's Berry Farm amphitheater around that time. I do remember the Nervous Norvus version as well. |
Subject: Lyr Add: SMOKE SMOKE SMOKE THAT CIGARETTE From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 07 Aug 08 - 11:19 AM As a follow-up, here are the lyrics to "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette." It's done in a talking blues style with the chorus sung. Merle Travis is credited with writing it, at least in part. It was #1 on the charts in 1947 for something like six weeks. The song was recently revived for use on the Soundtrack of the film "Thank You for Smoking." Title: Smoke, Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette! (Tex Williams) Now I'm a feller with a heart of gold And the ways of a gentleman I've been told The kind of guy that wouldn't even harm a flea But if me and a certain character met The guy that invented the cigarette I'd murder that son-of-a-gun in the first degree It ain't cuz I don't smoke myself And I don't reckon that it'll harm your health Smoked all my life and I ain't dead yet But nicotine slaves are all the same At a pettin' party or a poker game Everything gotta stop while they have a cigarette Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette Puff, puff, puff and if you smoke yourself to death Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate That you hate to make him wait But you just gotta have another cigarette Now in a game of chance the other night Old Dame Fortune was a-doin' me right The kings and the queens just kept on comin' round And I got a full and I bet 'em high But my bluff didn't work on a certain guy He just kept on raisin' and layin' that money down Now he'd raise me and I'd raise him I sweated blood, gotta sink or swim He finally called and didn't even raise the bet So I said "aces full Pops how 'bout you?" He said "I'll tell you in a minute or two But right now, I gotta have me a cigarette" Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette Puff, puff, puff and if you smoke yourself to death Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate That you hates to make him wait But you just gotta have another cigarette (Ah, smoke it! Hah! Yes! Yes! Yes!) The other night I had a date With the cutest little girl in the United States A high-bred, uptown, fancy little dame She loved me and it seemed to me That things were 'bout like they oughta be So hand in hand we strolled down lover's lane She was oh so far from a cake of ice And our smoochin' party was goin' nice So help me cats I believe I'd be there yet But I give her a kiss and a little squeeze And she said, "ah, Marty, excuse me please I just gotta have me another, cigarette" And she said, smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette Puff, puff, puff and if you smoke yourself to death Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate That you hate to make him wait But you just gotta have another cigarette. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Life gets tedious, don't it From: Leadfingers Date: 07 Aug 08 - 03:41 PM Carson Robison did a follow up recording - More and more Teejus Aint It !! I'll try and find the words ! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Life gets tedious, don't it From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 08 Aug 08 - 07:22 AM It bears mentioning that Carson Robison was the composer of "Life Gets Tee-jus" and its original followup, "Don't Make Sense, Does It?" Robison was a titan in the development of the country music industry, beginning as a soloist, studio guitarist, and notably accompanist to Vernon Dalhart. He wrote many fine songs, some of which have passed into tradition. (My fave is "Ramblin' Cowboy.") He dueted with pop singers with a folky edge like Frank Luther, but also accompanied some of the most authentic, including Kentuckians Buell Kazee and fiddler Jilson Setters -- J.W. "Blind Bill" Day in real life. Robison's fingerprints are all over old time music, mostly in the direction of professionalizing it, but he was a sensitive musician and very versatile, and contributed to the growth of the C&W industry in dozens of ways -- a sort of early version of Chet Atkins, perhaps. He deserves to be better known. Bob |
