Subject: Some bawdy drinking song???
From: Clinton Hammond
Date: 04 Feb 02 - 01:42 PM

A "mate" of mine on another MB elsewhere posted these lyrics

I saw her snatch her suitcase from the window
I held her but a moment in the rain
I kissed as she started for the station
To see her brother Jack off on the train.

Anybody got the 4-1-1 on this song??

.-)

Word missing in the 3rd line? May be "I kissed her as ..." would fit the metre.

According to this site, it's a "Kenneth Threadgill Song-Austin TX He used to perform this in the 70's" and is quoted this way:

I saw her snatch...the suitcase from the window
I held her but(t)... a moment in the rain
I kissed her as(s)... she ran down to the station
To see her brother Jack off on the train

I didn't find any more lyrics.

I think it was Llewtrah who originally asked about this on the Bawdy list. And I posted back what my friend Allan Schwinn sings this as an intro to "The Ship Song" (which I can post the words to, but it's not bawdy, and is under copyright, but I don't know who wrote it).

What he sings is:

I saw her snatch.........her suitcase from the closet
I grabbed her butt.........time was growing short
I kissed her ass.............the taxi came to take her
To see her brother Jack.........off on the train

He says he got it years ago from some comedian.

kinda silly

Pffft....

Isn't that 98% of what get's called pub/celtic music???

I LIKE kinda silly!

Insulting to women? Well, it was a woman who made the original post on another MB (the 'he' above is a typeo) so I guess one cannot presume to speak for everyone...

I assume that Clinton is the other side of the ditch as the description "Celtic Music" has no such connotation over here in the UK. I'm not used to it being particularly linked to "Pub" music as a category either. There are bawdy songs in most genres, but I would have thought that unless we're talking about Celtic rugby supporters that Celtic music is no raunchier than any other.

I don't see it as insulting to women, Peg. Full of doubles entendres, sure (which I confess I completely missed in the first post; but then, "To the pure, all things are pure" **BG**). But insulting to women? How?

Oh good gods damn Bald Eagle... Don't go there man!

LOL!!

And Dave B... Ya... I'm a New Worlder... and ya this kind of crap is exactly what get's totted around by the mob as "Irish" or "Celtic" music...

But then again, so is crap like 7 Drunken Nights, and the Unicorn Song....

My usual response to the innane question "Do you play and Celtic music?" is, "Sorry, the Celts were extinct long before I had a chance to learn any of thier music."

This song was preformed by The Treniers, who were an R&B group during the 40's and are credited by some as the group that first started Rock & Roll. To the best of my knowledge the song title is "I Saw Her Snatch". Milt Trenier can still be seen singing this song in Chicago, though if you go to see him you might have to request it. I have only seen this done as duet. The following is my recollection of the song. I don't know how to best write this out and will be using an "..." to indicate a hold for two beats of the music.

1: I saw her snatch...

2: What are you singing you can't sing that!

1: What?

2: You can't sing a song like that in front of these fine people.

1: All I was going to say was; I saw her snatch... her suitcase from the window.

2: Oh, alright.

1: I saw her snatch… her suitcase from the window. I held her but...

2: Hold it, hold it. What are you doing?

1: What?

2: You just can't sing a song like this!

1: Why? I was just going to sing; I held her but... a moment in the rain.

2: That's it?

1: Yes

2: Ok

1: I saw her snatch... her suitcase from the window. I held her but... a moment in the rain. I kissed as...

2: That's it! Stop right there!

1: All I was singing was; I kissed her as... she departed for the station.

2: look, just do me a favor. Keep it closer together, and don't pause like that.

1: Keep it closer together?

2: Yes, please.

1: Alright.

2: Thank you.

1: I saw her snatchher suitcase from the window. I held her buta moment in the rain. I kissed her asshe departed for the station. To see her bother Jack off on the train.

A similar old tease (best for nonrhotic speakers):

A sol-, a sol-, a soldier I would be,

Two pis-, two pis-, two pistols on my knee,

For cu-, for cu-, for curiosity,

To fight for count-, to fight for count-, to fight for country.

I heard this song in Keswick Ontario at the Waterfront Bar and Grill. The band was Two 4 the Show. From what I remember most of the lyrics go like this.I saw her snatch;her suitcase from the window.I held her ass;she walked through the door.Oh she blew me;a kiss from the driveway. And she held my cock;er spaniel once more. She sold her coun;try farmhouse in London, and I ate her box;of raisins in the shade.

I learned this variation in 7th grade, nearly 50 years ago: I saw her snatch her satchel from the table / I held her but a moment in my arms / We went down to the station / To see her brother Jack off on the train. While I won't say one version is superior to the other, you've got to love that alliteration in the first line.

A lot of this sounds like it has its roots in an old Redd Foxx party record, circa 1956 or so.

Our friend Allan Schwinn sings this as an intro to another song
originally sent me those words instead of the intro.

A few years ago I asked him for his source and he replied --

"I heard a standup comedian do something like this
before dirt was invented. I changed the words a bit so
it would fit to music. I then added it to the
beginning of the ship song which is somewhat from
another comedian. The total final arrangement is mine.
No copyright existed then.....but it does
now. I guess the source is me [Allan Schwinn].

What he sings is:

I saw her snatch.........her suitcase from the closet
I grabbed her butt.........time was growing short
I kissed her ass.............the taxi came to take her
To see her brother Jack.........off on the train

Then he goes into "The Ship Song" (which is under
copyright, but he doesn't know who wrote it) --

Everytime we take a trip you always get my goat.
I like traveling on a plane....you like a ferry boat.
Well, the next time we go traveling,
Ships are out and I declare;
You go your way, I'll go mine;
I'll met you over there.

Go take a ship for yourself.
I'll go by plane or by myself.
If you can't fly in planes,
Ride in busses or in trains,
Then go take a ship for yourself.

Take a battleship, an excursion ship
Or a fishing ship will do.
If you can't take a big ship
Then take a small canoe.
Bon voyage to you my friend,
I'll meet you at the journey's end,
If you like briny seas, ocean waves and an ocean breeze
Then go take a ship for yourself.

And then, of course, there are the words to the version of 'She'll be Coming Round the Mountain' that they didn't teach us at school...

Oh she's got a lovely bottom set of teeth
Oh she's got a lovely naval uniform
Oh she's got a lovely country house in Spain

etc...

....but I think this may bo on an old thread somewhere..

A Trooper Watering His Nag first publish by Thomas d'Urfey in 1717. Though he quotes it as "an old song" then so mid 17th c is a likely age.

I sing it fairly regularly.

I know this is REALLY pedantic, but as the similarity between 'snatch' and 'satchel' is called 'assonance', not alliteration, I couldn't resist;)

First heard in 1957 as a college fraternity pledge class skit:

First time through it is Introduced as a song for learning simple guitar chords:

I saw her grab...her satchel from the doorway,
I held her just.... a moment in the rain.
I kissed her when ... we went down to the station
To see her brother Jack leave ...on the train.

But then I got a little flustered as I played it for the Faculty Wives' Club
And it came out like this:

I saw her snatch... her satchel from the doorway;
I held her butt ...a moment in the rain.
I kissed her ass... we went down to the station
To see her brother Jack off ... on the train.

I was never invited back by the Faculty Wives!

I saw her snatch, her suitcase from the window.
I held her ass, she walked out the door.
Well she blew me, a kiss from the driveway.
And she held my cock-erspaniel once more.
