Subject: St Louis MO Music

I have been buried for the last two days, trying to find a Pub or similar venue in St Louis (or environs) that has a session or song session going next week/s. I'd like to meet some folks, find out about possible venues for playing later - but just have a good time playing for a night while I'm passing through.

Any ideas? Where should I be looking?

... by the way, I'm really open to any sort of acoustic music. I guess I've only been looking in the Pubs, but any folk-style jam would interest me. We have so many aroun Dallas, I just figured there must be some in St Louis too, and maybe there are - I just haven't been able to find 'em!

Jed:
Send an e-pistle to Paul Stamler, asking for St. Louis venues. He does the best folk radio show in the country, plays in a couple of different contradance bands and maybe one klezmer group. When we did a concert in St. Louis with Dave Para and Cathy Barton a few years back, Paul was our soundman, and a bloody good one, too. He's also the guy who programmed and mastered Art Thieme's live CD" The Older I Get, The Better I Was.

http://kdhx.org/calendar_events/arts_calendar.htm KDHX Events and Arts Calendar.

http://www.hypergravity.com/whuzzup/concerts.htm St. Louis Concert Calendar.

You might run into a few good leads by running through those two sites.

http://kdhx.org/schedule.htm Oh, and give a listen to KDHX while you are there. I used to call it the best radio station in the country. It is still among the best.

Jed, you might look up a pub called McGurks. I dont know if they have anything scheduled, but they'll know where to send you.

Check out Music Folk, a music store, the only one in St. Louis that I know of that specializes in acoustic string instruments. They should be able to tell you everything that's going on in the folk music genre. (They have an online events calendar, but I see it's out of date.)

The Focal Point is a venue that specializes in folk music. (But I see their schedule only goes up to December, 2001. What's going on here?)

KDHX is the local funky public radio station. Looks like they have a music calendar that is up to date (but it's not all folk).

The Riverfront Times is the local free weekly newspaper that also prints an events schedule, and has one online.

If blues is what you're into, check out News of the Blues.

FolkFire is an organization that promotes & publicizes folk music in the area.

John D. McGurk's is the local Irish bar. They have live music several nights per week. I don't know if they have sessions.

(I grew up in St. Louis, but haven't lived there for 30 years. I still have friends and relatives there that I visit occasionally. So my knowledge is kind of sketchy.)

I called McGurks - seems they have an Irish band booked on Wed night. I will probably go there if I can't find a session/jam. Some of the links I've checked already, but some are new. I'll check 'em out.

Thanks all, for the info. I'll let you know if I find anything worth following up.

Well, I wrote to Paul Stamler. The calendar links looked interesting, but none listed a jam or session on Wed night. The Music Folk have an out-of-date calendar, but they apparently had a Wed night session running on Wed nights. I'll call in the Am to check it out (I'm a music store junkie so I also printed out directions to the place. I'm SURE I'll stop in).

I grabbed a couple of other tel nos off the links to check out tomorrow - so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks all!

Jed, I had completely forgot about the Music Folk Store. Make sure you have your drool towel handy.
