I've heard Mr. Suffet perform Sally Ann on the banjo, and whatever he lacks in subtlety and technique he more than makes up for enthusiasm and energy.

What neither Mr. Oestereich nor Ms. Dugan knows is that I first learned Sally Ann from that Pete Seeger LP.


I can't figure out how I messed it up twice, but here's that third verse. Don't bother looking for it on Pete's recording.

Mr. Suffet, it sounds like we both had the same experience: hear the Pete Seeger 10" Folkways recording many years ago & only later hear Ashley's version & realize where he got it. (it's been many years-- did Seeger credit Ashley or Rufus Crisp?) Most of the time when I play Sally Ann it is the Round Peak/Galax version in D, without words; as a local calls it, "the Surry County national anthem." Thanks for reminding me of the other! PETE

I do Sally Ann in C, using a combination of styles that Pete Seeger would call in his banjo book "whamming," "frailing," and "duble thumbing." Here are the chords I use in C tuning (gCGBD). Note that what I call Am is actually Am7 beause of the 5th string drone. I guess that means F is really F2, if the chord exists by that name.

Each chord is written immediately before syllable on which change occurs.

[C] Ever see a muskrat, [Am] Sally Ann,
[C] Draggin' his thick tail [Am] through the sand,
[C] Pickin' a banjo, [Am] kickin' up sand?
[G7] I'm gonna marry you, [C] Sally Ann.

[F] I'm gonna marry you, [C] Sal gal,
[G7]I'm gonna marry you, [C]Sally Ann.

For the fun of it try raising the B note up to C and have a DOUBLE C tuning.. It's alot of fun like that.. All the best ,Guy.
From the vidio of clarence it looks like he's using that tuning on " Free a little bird " Or " Blue ridge Mts." I cant remember now. Lots of frailing not a ton of left hand work
