Subject: SNAKE BAKED A HOECAKE
From: voyager
Date: 06 Feb 02 - 04:54 PM

Last weekend I bought a great JODY STECHER CD

"Going Up on the Mountain" - (from CAMSCO)

because it had the great Bluegrass Tune -
SNAKE BAKED A HOECAKE (Tab Requested)

Last night I went to see the O Brother roadshow
DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN tour.

I don't get it. What's with the mountain thing?
Are we supposed to go up it or down?

This was a little funny rhyme one said to children (trotting them on the knee,or dancing them two-handed about the floor):

Snake baked a hoe-cake
Set a frog to mind it,
Frog got to noddin, and
A lizard come and stold it-
Spoken: BRING BACK MY HOE-CAKE, YOU LONG-TAILED NANNY-O!
Many years ago I did a residency in Fresno State College, and met and made music with the folk group there. Jody was one of them, and I'm pretty sure he must have learned that little poem from me- has he made it into a song?

As to your puzzlement about the Mountain, I guess it would depend upon your starting point whether you go up or down. I believe Ralph Stanley's getting sort of Godly feeling these days- the Bible talks about Moses on the Mount, and then coming down from The Mount, after meeting with God and getting the commandments. Think so?

It appears as a song in Ruth Crawford Seeger's "Animal Folk Songs for Children," and is sung by Neill and Calum MacColl on the (extended) Seeger family recordings of the same name. Ruth Seeger credited Jacob A. Evanson in "American Folksong and the Total Culture," published by the Music Publishers Journal, July-Aug., Sept.-Oct. 1944. She's got it marked as originating in Pennsylvania.

The words differ slightly from Jean's version, and I can't say it's particularly bluegrassy, it is just a short little ditty:

F C F C The snake baked a hoecake,

F Bb C and set a frog to watch it.

F C F C The frog fell a-dozing,

F Bb C and the lizard came and took it.

F C F C7 Bring back my hoecake, you long-tailed nanny-o.

Thanks to kytrade/Desert Dancer for tracing the roots of
this catchy BANJO TUNE (bluegrass comment for my mistake)
Re: JODY STECHER recording, his first album
Jody Stecher & Friends: Snake Baked A Hoecake (Bay 203; 1974) LP
corresponds with when I heard this tune
It has always been one of those 'stuck in my mind' kind of songs

Re: Mountains (up and down), my comments were somewhat tongue in cheek and kytrad was correct in her OT references

Finally, this kind of dialog is why I LOVE THE MUDCAT
Only 53 more days before I can request a note from kytrad to accompany my auction bid on the 1962 Newport FF Songbook

regards
voyager

Wow. My sister used to say Bring back that hoecake, you long-tailed nanny-O, and to this day I have never known where that came from... THANKS, MUDCAT! I always thought she just made it up. She makes things up, you know.

Kytrad, in the notes to both the original LP and the CD reissue, Jody says he learned the song from his mother.

My younger brother brought home a book from the school library, I think, that had tales of Lazy Liza Lizard. The lizard stole a hoe-cake, and part of the snake's revenge was to fake a ghost, or some such, chanting Snake baked a hoe cake. In that version it ended with some further verse saying "Lazy Liza Lizard, I'm gonna cut out your gizard, and throw it in the lake..." (cause you took something that belonged to Mr. Snake--I don't remember the exact wording here). I never knew it as a song, although the 3 of us brothers used to put on dramas for our parents and other little brother, and we once did Lazy Liza Lizard, Mr. Frog and Mr. Snake.

COTCH, for caught. A Negro vulgarism.
    Snake baked a hoe-cake,
    Left a frog to watch it;
    Frog went to sleep,
    Lizard come and cotch it. — Virginia Negro Song.
--Dictionary of Americanisms by John Russell Bartlett (Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1860)

*
Snake baked a hoe cake, asked de frog to mind it.
De frog he fell asleep, and de lizard came and stol'd it.

CHORUS: Ruberree, ceder bree, heigho Juba!

De snake began to beat de lizard. De lizard he denied it,
And de frog said ye did, for I seed ye when ye stol'd it.

CHORUS: Ruberree, ceder bree, heigho Juba!

Alligator in de swamp catching de old gander....

--A Gallop among American Scenery by Augustus Ely Silliman (New York: A. S. Barnes & Co., 1881)

I kinda think that I recorded this several years ago- can't recall which record. Maybe the first 10" children's-song album I did for Folkways. If so, Smithsonian would have it. Anyway, there wasn't much of a tune; it was just a chant. I used it as part of Mom' churning song, in my old book, Singing Family of the Cumberlands (still in print after 53 years!).

Snake Baked A Hoecake - can also be found on the 2005 edition of the DEADWOOD Soundtrack. I remember hearing it on the series but don't remember the circumstances of the screen action that merit'ed such a song.

It is the 'bring back my hoe cake"...when the strings
nearly collide...that keep me hearing the little song
in my head...for years now...and tho I play it...
I never quite find that strange tension...
like you all... I love this song. kendra

It is indeed played during S-1 E-11 "Jewel's Boots Were Made For Walking," the end trailing credits of "Deadwood."(2004)

Snake Baked A Hoe Cake
(uncredited)
Performed by Mike Seeger (1933-2007)
(Younger half-brother of Pete Seeger and older brother of Peggy Seeger, Brother-in-law of Ewan MacColl, created "The New Lost City Ramblers" in 1958).
(source IMDB)

I am watching "Deadwood" for the first time.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

My attention span for movies is about 20 minutes...but with perseverance I am getting through two episodes a week.

From an article "Folk Songs of the South" in The School Journal, Vol. 77, No. 8 (New York: A. S. Barnes & Co., April, 1910), page 322:

Snake baked a hoecake,
  Set ole frog to hol' it;
Frog got to noddin',
  Lizard came an' stole it.
Bring back mah hoecake,
  Yo' lizard, col' an' clammy.
Bring it back this minute,
  Or I'll go an' tell yo' mammy!
    (But he got away.)

Coon foun' a 'possum
  Hidin' in de cellar.
Coon had his whiskers
  Painted green and yeller.
Come, Mister 'Possum,
  I know yo' been a-stealin',
Spooks'll come an' ketch yo'
  An' they'll grab yo' troo de ceilin'.
    (And they did.)

When Miss Kitty Cheatham scored one of her successes by singing the above recently few of her audience knew that the song had any particular significance, says the New York Sun, that it was more than a pleasing combination of nonsense words and an air of a catching, tuneful type. This indeed the song may have been, but there was more to it. "It Sho' 'Nuff Happened," for such is its title, traces its ancestry away back to the earliest North Carolina days and the jingles thereof. It is really entitled to a coat-of-arms.

The North Carolina jingle is but one of the many that Harvey Worthington Loomis has been busy ferreting out of the rapidly disappearing debris of old Southern folklore....

From Hodgson's National Songster ... (London: Orlando Hodgson, 1832), page 78:

JIM CROW.

Come listen all ye gals and boys, I'm just come from Tuckie-o,
I'm goin' to sing a little song, my name him be Jim Crow.
I was born in Ole Virginny a long time ago,
Ven Unele Sam he made de inemy jump, Jim Crow;

Veel about and turn about and do jis so,
Eb'ry time I veel about, I jump Jim Crow.

Oh, I'm a roarer on de fiddle, an' down in Ole Virginny
Dey say I play de scientific, like Massa Paganini;
I went down to de riber, I didn't mean to stay,
But dere I saw so many gals, I couldn't get away.
Veel about, &c.

Oh, I met the pretty Miss Dinah, an' I gib her a buss,
She slapt me in de face, and made a mouty fuss;
And den I go to New Orleans, and feel so full of fight,
Dey put me in de calaboose, and keep me dere all night.
Veel about, &c.

When I got out I bit a man, his name I now forgot,
And dere nothing left, 'sept a little grease spot;
I whipt my weight in wild cats, I eat an alligator,
And tear up more ground den kifer fifty load of tater.
Veel about, &c.

I sit upon a hornet's nest, I dance upon my head,
I tie a wiper round my neck, and den I goes to bed;
I kneels to de buzzard, and I bows to de crow,
And ebery time I veel about, I jumps jis so.
Veel about, &c.

A ring-tailed monkey, an' a rib-nose baboon,
Went out de oder day to spend the arternoon;
On de vay dey bake de oat cake in Ole Virginny niber tire,
Dey put de doe upon de foot, and hole it to de fire.
Veel about, &c.

Snake baked a hoe cake, and set de frog to watch it,
De frog he fell asleep and de lizard come and cotch it.
Deres possum up de gum tree, and racoon in de hollow,
Wake snakes for June bugs, stole my half dollar.
Veel about, &c.

Den go abed white folks, don't be slow,
Hop ober double trebble, jump Jim Crow;
Old folks, young folks, please let me go,
I come anoder time, an' sing Jim Crow.
Veel about, &c.

Oh, white folks, white folks, I see up to snuff,
And I's afraid indeed, dat you neber get enough;
So neber mind de wedder, or how de wind do blow,
For in spite of wind and wedder, vill I jump, Jim Crow.
Veel about, &c.
