Subject: SNAKE BAKED A HOECAKE From: voyager Date: 06 Feb 02 - 04:54 PM Last weekend I bought a great JODY STECHER CD "Going Up on the Mountain" - (from CAMSCO) because it had the great Bluegrass Tune - SNAKE BAKED A HOECAKE (Tab Requested) Last night I went to see the O Brother roadshow DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN tour. I don't get it. What's with the mountain thing? Are we supposed to go up it or down? voyager FSGW Ghetto |

Snake baked a hoe-cake As to your puzzlement about the Mountain, I guess it would depend upon your starting point whether you go up or down. I believe Ralph Stanley's getting sort of Godly feeling these days- the Bible talks about Moses on the Mount, and then coming down from The Mount, after meeting with God and getting the commandments. Think so?

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: SNAKE BAKED A HOECAKE From: Desert Dancer Date: 07 Feb 02 - 12:42 AM It appears as a song in Ruth Crawford Seeger's "Animal Folk Songs for Children," and is sung by Neill and Calum MacColl on the (extended) Seeger family recordings of the same name. Ruth Seeger credited Jacob A. Evanson in "American Folksong and the Total Culture," published by the Music Publishers Journal, July-Aug., Sept.-Oct. 1944. She's got it marked as originating in Pennsylvania. The words differ slightly from Jean's version, and I can't say it's particularly bluegrassy, it is just a short little ditty: F C F C The snake baked a hoecake, F Bb C and set a frog to watch it. F C F C The frog fell a-dozing, F Bb C and the lizard came and took it. F C F C7 Bring back my hoecake, you long-tailed nanny-o. ~ Becky in Tucson |

The lizard stole a hoe-cake, and part of the snake's revenge was to fake a ghost, or some such, chanting Snake baked a hoe cake. In that version it ended with some further verse saying "Lazy Liza Lizard, I'm gonna cut out your gizard, and throw it in the lake..." (cause you took something that belonged to Mr. Snake--I don't remember the exact wording here). I never knew it as a song, although the 3 of us brothers used to put on dramas for our parents and other little brother, and we once did Lazy Liza Lizard, Mr. Frog and Mr. Snake. |

Maybe the first 10" children's-song album I did for Folkways. If so, Smithsonian would have it. Anyway, there wasn't much of a tune; it was just a chant. I used it as part of Mom' churning song, in my old book, Singing Family of the Cumberlands (still in print after 53 years!). |

When Miss Kitty Cheatham scored one of her successes by singing the above recently few of her audience knew that the song had any particular significance, says the New York Sun, that it was more than a pleasing combination of nonsense words and an air of a catching, tuneful type. "It Sho' 'Nuff Happened," for such is its title, traces its ancestry away back to the earliest North Carolina days and the jingles thereof. It is really entitled to a coat-of-arms. The North Carolina jingle is but one of the many that Harvey Worthington Loomis has been busy ferreting out of the rapidly disappearing debris of old Southern folklore.... |
