There's the possibility that I might have to chance of joining a band from Detroit in late summer... Now they come to WIndsor occasionally and gig, but they do it all under the table...

IF I join this band, I'll be the guy crossing the border most often...

What do I have to do to make it 'official'??

I have no idea even where to start...

Ideas???

;-)

I'd rather cut my own throat than live in America... Better I just ghost over on occasion and take work away from the occasional musician...

I kinda figured that Rick'd have something useful to add here...

Tedious though it may be. Get yer papers. Are you a member of the union? Personally I'm cowed by border guards who get to wear uniforms, pack heat, flaunt authority, and probably think musicians are commie low-lifes. If I'm crossing to actually work, I make sure I have my documents in order. And believe me I'm more polite at the border than in real life.

Rick

"And believe me I'm more polite at the border than in real life."

Oh abso-frigg'n-lootly mate!! LOL!! The prospect of a 'congugal' visit at the border scares me to my bones! LOL!!!!

Union? Nope... not I... not yet I guess... get my papers? I guess that's my question... where does one start there?

How does being in the union effect playing non-union gigs?

There are far more gray (or is that 'grey') areas now than ever before. Certainly it's easier to get work permits if yer a member of the union, but I'd just call up a (cheap) lawyer and they'll tell ya what to send for and what to sign. 'Specially after 9/11. You DON'T want to get on the computer. That means you can be hassled if yer only crossing the border to visit someone for an hour.

Fortunatley my father-out-law is a lawyer... I guess I'll ask him...

Does one have to get a work permit on a gig by gig basis? Or can a general say 6 month or 1 year "occasional" permit be had?

Ta Rick!

Hi, Clinton. . . good luck with all the "red tape"; hope all goes well with the band. However, if you play guitar, watch out for border guards who, when they stop you and make you open up your guitar case, pick up your guitar by the sound hole and shake it!

cheers,

Aux

Oh jeez, clinton would probably punch em in the head, and get shot for causing a ruckus!

Just make sure I get one of the Seagulls left to me in your will. Preferably the one without bullet holes. Thanks buddy!

Steve

Doesn't NAFTA provide the ability for you to work South of the border? If they give you any static, just sue the U.S. under NAFTA Chapter 11. Ought to be worth a couple of billion or so. <g>
