And I liked the way in the Sunday session in the Bull all the different types of music hung in together (even if the bar was so crowded that most of the Mudcat singers slipped off for an extra session down the road.) |

I promised Morticia the final verse to "The Old Dun Cow". As far as I know it was written by Pete Twitchett who used to run the Croydon Folk Club, in days of yore, when it was at "The Waddon". I might as well post it so that anyone else who wants it (Vectis ?) can pick it up. I'll also PM it to Dick Greenhaus to see if he can add it to the DT version. Then all of a sudden, in the firemen rushed, And they saved us one by one. But when they came to save the booze, they found it had all gone. And when the fire was reported, in the papers the next day. They said they found no booze at all - It must have all boiled away ! The fire really did happen many years ago at "The Dun Cow" in The Old Kent Road. It was feared that several drinkers had perished in the fire, until they were found floating in the cellar, which was Half full of water, all in advance states of intoxication. PS. Linda (she'll be using the handle "Smudge" by the way) wants to know how much it's going to cost her to keep the photos out of the "Sunday Sport" etc. - and was Micca really taking a movie ? |

You have to imagine a fanfare of kazoos between each one..... 35 70 228 267 277 and I think 177. I say I think, because I'm convinced the owner of this came forward, and chose a prize there and then..... if not, then it's a good job Eric wasn't there to collect his present, it will go in the prize pool. Prizes are: a bottle of bubbly, a bottle of beer, another bottle of beer, a Bert Hansell CD, a tin of Hawick balls and something else. Thanks to everyone who took part, either donating a prize, buying a ticket or being very patient whilst I called out 30 numbers with kazoo accompaniment!! It raised over £100, all profit for Mudcat. The kazoo workshop did actually happen, just not all in the same room at the same time.... they were a major part of the raffle as you've heard, participated in several of the tunes and songs and even shut Micca up! It was good to meet so many Mudcatters in person again, and to hear so much enjoyable music, singing, and storytelling (welcome aboard the Mudcat Adrian O). I invited some friends and family to some of the sessions, and they were impressed by the quality of the musical talents, and the friendliness of the people they met. A lot of thanks to; Dai - for organising the event, and for cooking the chili. Bob Adams - for letting us use York House, and for his hard work of preparation. Gareth - for getting Friends of Mudcat off the ground. John Routledge - who first suggested a Gathering for early 2002. Steve and Lindy at the Crown - for being such welcoming hosts. People at the Sunday Vaults session - for letting us join in. And finally - everyone who came and joined in (even the kazoo players!) The donors of raffle prizes were very generous, and I have special cause to thank Giok for the bottles of Founder's Reserve Arran - it tastes wonderful! |

Perhaps 12 across should be "One of the Mudcatters who came from Harlow" - Linda (Essex Girl) originally comes from Harlow as well - although she keeps quiet about the fact as anybody, except Kevin McGrath, would. I don't have the particular book containing that one, but obviously someone there did- was it Ms Liz? It was a lovely weekend, and I feel i have met some new friends, as has happened at every Mudcat gathering I have been to. An interesting selection of music and a lot of talent, wonderful singing and playing in a variety of styles, recitations (good man yerself Adrian!) and appalachian dancing from Kay. One of the highlights for me was in the Crown on Sunday lunchtime when Kay wanted to dance but we had no instrumentalists available: Kay suggested she could dance to South Australia (no she didn't really go that far) so long as it was fast enough...
