I was always very fond of this one - and had no idea of its Irish connections. Must chase it up.

Thanks much, Reinhard. So far, I've been able to find a piano rendition (quite nice) by Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin called "Casadh Na Gráige" (The Turning of the Road) on his albums Templum and Between Worlds. I'm guessing that's a fuller title of the tune. The only other musical mention of it I've found is to an arrangement for brass band(!). Clearly isn't the usual suspect "Casadh an tSúgáin" (Twisting the Rope).

Casadh Na Gráige also appears to be a place or town in West Kerry, which complicates searching. There is a poem called "Aisling ag Casadh Na Gráige" (A Vision at CNG) by Michael Davitt—unrelated to the tune or song.

Anyone else know where Les and Mícheál may have found this tune?

Les Barker wrote this poem to the traditional Irish tune Casadh "that demanded words."

In the liner notes to Tabor's Against the Streams, the words to "The Turn of the Road" are credited to Les Barker, but the tune is listed as "traditional". What is the name of the tune, and what other lyrics, if any, did it carry?

Here, I hope, is the tune. Do I need to add the key in the text someplace, or is it already encoded? Barbara

Subject: ADD: The Turn of the Road (Les Barker)
From: Barbara
Date: 07 Apr 98 - 12:27 PM

Here's the words; I'm working on the tune; got the MIDI file, and downloaded program, so...soon...
Barb

THE TURN OF THE ROAD
(Les Barker)

Will you walk with me beyond the road's turning,
Where day takes the valley that leads into night?
Love, will you walk with me all through my journey,
Or only till the light?

Believe me, I need you. Don't think of leaving.
This evening, your love lights the way to the dawn.
Don't leave me here now. You've got me believing
Tomorrow I'll wake newborn.

If you love me as I love you,
Who cares how dark the night may appear?
If you love me as I love you,
I will know no fear.

The signs on the road are just there to mislead you.
At times I've misread them though I was so wise.
The turn of the road, my love, that's where I need you.
Tears always blind my eyes.

[Repeat first verse.]

Love, will you hold me through all my life's evenings?
Love, will you take the road right to the end?
I've never had someone I can believe in,
Forever, my lover, my friend.

Hi, Barb - it would be nice to see and hear that song. If you're able to generate a MIDI, you can post it here as both MIDI and ABC. Just follow this MIDITXT link and head to Australia to download a conversion program programmed just for Mudcat by our very own Professor Alan Foster, who programs computers by day and sings folk songs at night. It takes a bit to set up the program (i.e., you have to read the instructions), but it works like a charm.

It's on Against the Stream and is called 'The Turning of the Road' by Les Barker. It begins" Will you walk with me beyond the road's turning/Where day takes the valley that leads into night?/Will you walk with me all through my life's journey/Or only 'till the light?

If you would like the rest of the lyrics, say, and I will post them. Haven't, however, learned my ABC's yet. Maybe could generate a midi file. Dunno. Barb
