Subject: generic name for Feb.19th-May 30th From: GUEST,Seth from China Date: 12 Feb 02 - 08:47 AM The period from 2/19 to 5/30 in the U.S., corresponding to "Spring", is the longest period in our national calandar without a holiday.(except Easter, but Easter doesn't get you any time off) If you work this can be a long stretch. Do you have a name for it? Seth |

I normally take vacation days here and there to get in a few three-day weekends. Too bad Martin Luther King, Jr. couldn't have been born in March or April. His birthday is too close to the other holidays. |
Subject: RE: BS: generic name for Feb.19th-May 30th From: katlaughing Date: 12 Feb 02 - 01:19 PM Seth! Nice to hear from you, again. So you folks went back over, eh? In some belief systems, the new year comes about the same time as Spring Equinox and there can be celebrations, but of course, in this country, those are not recognised as worthy of time off. I like this time of year, leading into Spring, and also beginning, sort of with Jan. 1st, so I think of it as Fresh Start! Welcome back adn I hope we get to hear some more of your great stories of China. kat |
Subject: RE: BS: generic name for Feb.19th-May 30th From: Barbara Shaw Date: 12 Feb 02 - 03:00 PM A lot of people get Good Friday off work, which is on March 29 this year. And many people get Memorial Day off, which is on May 27. |
Subject: RE: BS: generic name for Feb.19th-May 30th From: GUEST Date: 12 Feb 02 - 03:14 PM It depends on the nationality and religion, really. In Ireland we get Easter Monday off. In the US, even though it is no longer a legal holiday, some businesses and government offices manage to find a way to take Good Friday off, under the guise of "spring break" (for schools), or a "professional staff development day" or some such. The only word I know of that covers this "season" In Europe and the US is Lent, but again, it would only be meaningful to Christians. |
Subject: RE: BS: generic name for Feb.19th-May 30th From: SharonA Date: 12 Feb 02 - 05:35 PM Well, no, "Lent" is only from Ash Wednesday till Easter (this year, Feb. 13 to Mar. 31). Some of us who work in the US have an even longer period between day-off-from-work holidays. Where I work, we get New Year's Day, then nothing until Memorial Day (this year, Jan. 1 to May 27). What do we call that?.... several names, all of which consist of strings of four-letter words. |
Subject: RE: BS: generic name for Feb.19th-May 30th From: Ebbie Date: 12 Feb 02 - 05:58 PM In Alaska, many people take part of their annual vacation during the Alaska Folk Festival. Seven days of magic; this year April 8-15. Ebbie |
