TREES by Joyce Kilmer I tjink that I shall never see A poem as lovely as a tree A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed Against the Earths sweet flowing breast A tree that may in summer wear A tree that looks at God all day And lifts its leafy arms to pray A nest of robins in her hair Upon whose bosom snow has lain Who intimately lives with rain Poems are made by fools like me But only God can make a tree

Ella, we must a similar set of mind as that was the first poem I learned!

The first song I learnt because I liked it so much I had to sing it was 'Vincent' by Don McLean ( I was 9 ),closely followed by most of the Carpenters catalogue. Strange how I spent most of my teenage years listening to Prog. Rock and heavy metal...........

Finnegan's Wake. The novel. Nonono. Me sainted mother Gawd rest 'er always *claimed* that at age 3 or somesuch, I recited "The Cremation of Sam McGee" in its entirety, on demand. Not entirety sure about that; she somuch wanted me to be wunna themthere ChildeHarolde Progydees. Dunno. Progeny, yes. Still like the poym though. Highbrow stuff. But as to *real* prodigies: my son (brag brag), now 20, as a babby always had "Wild Mountain Thyme" as his bedtime song. Celtic Indoctrination, y'know. So one night the wife and I are singin' it to this 21-month-old kiddo---and bedam but doesn't he start recitin' the chorus letter-perfectly verbatim along with us as we're singin' it! Ha! I'd mention it's still his bedtime song too but he'd kill me so I won't. :) Wife reports her first (poem, I mean) was:

Once there was an elephant
Who tried to use the telephant.
No, no, I mean an elephone
Who tried to use the telephone.
Dear me! I am not certain quite
That even now I've got it right.
Howe'er it was, he got his trunk
Entangled in the telephunk.
The more he tried to get it free,
The louder buzzed the telephee.
I fear I'd better drop this song
Of elephop and telephong.

for Jon Freeman: the song was from the television program "Robin Hood" I was extrememly young -before I was in school--& as I recall:

Wobin Hood, Wobin Hood, widing fwough the gwen. Wobin Hood, Wobin Hood, wif his band of men, feared by the wrich, woved by the good, Wobin Hood, Wobin Hood, Wobin Hood.

but this was not my first song! My mother forced me to learn "Fairest Lord Jesus" which I had to sing before the whole church, while standing on a chair so that they could see me. And we weren't even Lutheran!

Dani - Fer my money (Euros? Shoals of Dollars? Nyaah, better Punt) your "Up the Long Ladder" is da Best herein. But surely your Mum also taught you the closely-related & similarly-Clancified Carrick-on-Suir children's ditty
(THREAD DRIFT ADVISORY IS UPGRADED TO THREAD DRIFT WATCH)
Ahem! Ahem! My mother has gone to church!
She told me not to play with you because you're in the dirt!
It isn't because you're dirty, it isn't because you're clean,
It's because you've got the whoopin' cough and eat mar-gerine!

Well. (As the Right Honourable George "Eff" Will, my Hero to be sure, likes to farrightly write.)

Here's my private family inside update.
(THREAD DRIFT WARNING) But first the explanatory Preface.

Lady P...

I grew up listening to stories told by my dad, that were mostly nonsense. And a hotch potch of all the fairy stories and folk tales, and nursery rhymes.

He'd make them up - and to me they sounded fine, so I used to be surprised that Cinderella didn't have 7 short men, and she didn't eat baby bears porridge.

I now listen to him telling my neices the same stories. They listen as intently as I used to too.

So, I guess you can see, where the ning nang nong poem came in handy.

Ella
