...which is a distinct possibility, say in July, where should he go, what should he see?

I sure like the looks of the Hebridean Celtic Festival, in Lewis July 17-20, but the thread I started on that a few days back went no where. Has no one been to this event? Where are Scottish Catters?

I really want to spend some time exploring some of the islands, and I only have two maybe three weeks. Primary objective is Scotland but England is surely a possibility or likelihood depending on travel logistics.

What's goin' on over there that would be fun?

Willie-O

10th Isle of Bute Folk Festival is on 19th-22nd July.

see www.butefolkweekend.co.uk

Good festival - Bute is in the Firth of Clyde, so it's very handy for Glasgow and the Central Belt in general.

Regular ferry service from the mainland

I'll root around and see what else is going on..

Cheers

Steven

Willie-O

Have a look at the Albafolk list. Unfortunately I have never made it to any of these festivals but I have heard very good reports about Newcastleton and Stonehaven.

I really hope you find something you fancy. And there is always stuff going on here in Edinburgh.

Hi Willie-O.

My niece used to work at Balnain House in Inverness, which might be a good source of information and Scottish-music-related things to attend.

I also vaguely remember her telling me that Dougie McLean's house is a visitable place - maybe sessions or concerts there?

She lives back in Ottawa now, so I could put you in contact with her if you want more info. Now that I think of it, I think she had some kind of connection with the Celtic Connections festival too.

So how's that workshop coming along? You'll have my cello ready before you leave, I trust?

Dougie Maclean's Taybank Hotel in Dunkeld is worth a visit. If he's around, he's happy to sit in on the sessions.. nice guy.

If you get to Glasgow - there's always stuff going on - there's literally at least one session going on every night of the week.

My current personal faves are : Wednesday night at Cafe Source, St Andrew's In The Square, Thursday at the Uisge Beatha in Woodlands Road, and Sunday at the Uisge Beatha, but there's also stuff at the Ben Nevis, the Park Bar, The Scotia, The Clutha Vaults, Babbity Bowster, and the Lismore

And then there's the folk clubs - The Star, etc...

Cheers

Steven

Workshop is still half built and half roofed.

Cello? Hello? Oh, I get it--that's a Joke!

And I certainly want to kick around Glasgow a bit, it's my late Dad's hometown.

Thanks Steven, you will be hearing from me as my plans develop.

Of course I am not very subtly trolling for just that kind of offer!

I'm unlikely to be heading to Lewis for that festival, but if your travels bring you over to the East of Scotland then I'm just outside Dunfermline and would be happy to put you up for a few days.

I note from the other thread that you're feeling overlooked. Forget Scots being argumentative (I strongly disagree with Murray about that). Your itinerary looks good to me. THe islands are a great idea. Don't know if you've been before, but there are festivals on Arran, Bute, Skye (I think) and the Hebridies. I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure you can travel to Harris for the Hebridean FF from Skye which is worth visiting as its beautiful.

Glasgow, definitely warmest people in the world, I'm sure they'll make you welcome. (There is a flip-side to that that people dwell on in an attempt to be humorous, but no more of a problem than any other big city)

If you're in Glasgow make sure you nip through to Edinburgh, its only 45mins by train, see the castle, Holyrood Palace etc I've pointed out elsewhere it has the biggest arts festival in the world. I have been corrected that this no longer has a folk music section. This is in August so I don't think it will coincide with your trip. Its worth a visit anyway as Edinburgh is usually buzzing

While Edinburgh no longer has a folk festival, you will find many folk acts on as part of the Fringe Festival (which is in August).

Scotland plans are on hold. I'm going to use that July vacation time to go down east for 10 days or so, then be back to play Stewart Park Fest in Perth. (I think).

Perth Ontario, that is.

The land of me father's forebears will have to wait a bit longer, but I'll be over there. Got the money stashed in a stocking...I will be going...
