Subject: RE: Lyr Req: That's How I Spell I-R-E-L-A-N-D From: RunrigFan Date: 02 Apr 15 - 04:45 PM Come all ye lads and lassies and sit you down with me, And I will tell the truth about a land that`s dear to me, You`ve read it in the papers and you`ve seen it on TV, But I will spell it out for you, what Ireland means to me. I is for internment of the innocent and free R is for resistance to the laws of tryany E is for the English who have torn our land apart L is for the love of freedom in every Irish heart A is for the answer we`re all searching for N is for one nation and an end to this long war D is for the dream of millions longing to be free. That`s how I spell Ireland, that`s what Ireland means to me. This land was once respected for it`s saints and scolars too But now the bomb and bullet that`s all that makes the news I know that it`s confusing and it`s hard to understand, But I will spell it out for you by spelling Ireland http://celtic-lyrics.com/lyrics/242.html |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: That's How I Spell I-R-E-L-A-N-D From: Jim Dixon Date: 05 Mar 15 - 01:33 AM There is a recording of THAT'S HOW I SPELL IRELAND sung by Dennis O'Neill on YouTube; it has this additional verse: 2. Closer, lad, and kiss your dad; go kiss your mother too, And whisper what I've told you, lad; you'll cheer her if you do, But never spell that grand old word the way you did, you hear, And always wear your thinkin' cap; you don't forget, my dear. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req:I-R-E-L-A-N-D From: GUEST Date: 30 Jan 09 - 01:28 PM Anyone know where I can find an actually audio clip of Maloney's leg. My Dad's cousin was a Maloney with a fake leg. He came across the lyrics and sheet music which I could learn to play but I'd like to hear it first as would he. If anyone knows where I can find it online or what album I might be able to find it on, I'd appreciate it. Cheers, S. Kelly |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req:I-R-E-L-A-N-D From: Alice Date: 21 Mar 98 - 09:30 PM I was sure I had another version of a song spelling out Ireland somewhere, but in my failed attempt to find it, I looked through a copy of an old songbook I was given called "The Irish Tavern Folio of Humor Songs". Some of the titles are common, like Cockles and Mussels, but I thought I would list some of the others, and if anyone wants the lyrics, let me know and I will post them. The Bowery Boys Columbus Was An Irishman Down Went McGinty Duffy's Blunders I Had Fifteen Dollars in My Inside Pocket The Irishman's Shanty The Irish Wedding ("Sure won't you hear what roarin cheer was spread at Paddy's wedding-O,") I've Worked Eight Hours This Day Jolly Irishman Maloney's Leg McSorley's Twins Mike Nolan, His Mule and His Cart The Mulligan Guard Paddy Upon the Canal Pat Malloy Patrick's Day Parade Since James Put On High Collars T'read on the Tail O' Me Coat Tuorelay Throw Him Down McCloskey The Widow Nolan's Goat Laughing Irish Eyes Phil The Fluter's Ball I have not looked in the database to see if any of these are already there. alice |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req:I-R-E-L-A-N-D From: Wolfgang Date: 20 Mar 98 - 05:58 AM Martin, I would have loved posting a song for you, for a change, but to my surprise I couldn't find it in my collection. Now I'm sitting here pondering what's to blame, my memory or my information retrieval system. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req:I-R-E-L-A-N-D From: Wolfgang Date: 18 Mar 98 - 05:41 AM Martin, when I saw your request I was sure that (a) I'd seen this on the web recently and could relocate it easily and (b) that it would be in my collection at home.
I was wrong with (a). If I'm right with (b) you'll see it here tomorrow. |
Subject: Lyr Req:I-R-E-L-A-N-D From: Martin Ryan Date: 18 Mar 98 - 05:10 AM Late last night (Paddy's Day), a friend of mine found himself singing an Irish-American song with a chorus based on having a word for each of the letters in the word I-R-E-L-A-N-D. When someone commented "I've never heard you singing that one before", the reply was "Sure I've haven't heard meself singing it for at least thirty years!" The problem is that he doesn't remember the "verse" - a long intro with a narrative thread, he thinks. Any suggestions? A quick look in the DT doesn't show anything. Regards p.s. No! I can't remember the words of the chorus - this was Patrick's day, for God's sake! |
