Subject: Naemanson's Going To Norfolk, VA
From: Naemanson

Hi Gang,

I'm on the road again. This time I am on my way to Norfolk, Virginia, for a conference. I will be there on the nights of the 26th and 27th of February. Is there anything musical happening down there or am I going to be forced to spend my evenings with a bunch of dry dusty bureaucrats?

Brett

I do not know if Ramblin' Conrad's is still in business or not as it has been many years since I lived in that area, but you might check. It was operated once by Bob Zentz, and may still be for that matter. You might check for a web site for Bob. If you could catch him performing somewhere you would have a memorable evening. He would also be one to know what was happening in Tidewater Virginia. Ramblin' Conrads was/is a music store and which also held concerts.

Bob Zentz still lives in Norfolk, VA, but Ramblin' Conrad's closed several years ago. On Wednesday nights, an informal group gathers to play some tunes at The Whitehorse Pub inside Pembroke Mall in Virginia Beach. For a better idea of what is going on, go to www.tffm.org This is the website for Tidewater Friends of Folk Music. There should be some info on concerts, etc. Hope this helps...

Bob Clark

Brett, do follow up Bob Clark's suggestion. Connecting with Bob Zentz could be immensely satisfying. I don't believe Rambling Conrad still exists as a storefront.

Bob's pretty busy, gigging hither and yon these days, so it would be wise to try to reach him ahead of time. Have a go at ZENTZFOLK@aol.com.

Too bad about Ramblin' Conrad's. It was a great place to perform and a fine place to shop.

Sandy

Hey Brett. Ever been to the Mariners Museum in Newport News? Sounds like you might not have time, but I'd like to find out more about my great uncle Fred who was the curator there in his second, more respectable career.

Have a great trip.

Bill

Hi guys,

I've been away on a trip to the Frozen North to drop off my cat. The White Cat has gone to live on the family farm. I think she'll be much happier there.

Thanks for the info. I will follow up on the links and see who I can find. Anything has to be better than going to a sports bar with a bunch of bureacrats.

Still, I do have to make some connections in my effort to get transferred to Sicily.

Brett

Just to report, I have contacted Bob and we will probably get together for the tune gathering at the White Horse Tavern.

By the way, Willie-o, I have been to that museum but not recently. I visited it while in the Navy some 30 years ago. I'd love to get back to see how it's changed.

Well, I went to Norfolk. I will gloss over the reason for being there for nobody is interested in that. However, on Wednesday Bob Zentz picked me up at the hotel and took me to the White Horse Tavern at the Pembroke Mall. I had never sung at a mall before. It seemed a little surreal but that was overcome by the great group who gathered to raise their voices. We had a great time. The format was straight song circle. There were upwards of 2 dozen people there and I heard some lovely stuff.

Thank you, Bob, for a lovely evening. If any of you from Norfolk read this, thanks to you too.

And if any of the rest of you get a chance to buy a Bob Zentz album, take it. He is very knowledgable, has a great voice, plays multiple instruments and is an all 'round nice guy. Thanks for giving me the info to contact him.

If the only thing Bob ever did was to write Beaucatcher's Farewell that would be legacy enough, but he has been a true blessing to Tidewater Virginia with his involvement in a coffee house, which I can no longer remember the name of, the Ramblin' Conrad store and concerts, the Old Dominion Folk Festival, and the untold number of performances. He certainly made ten years in Portsmouth a lot brighter.

I used to go to Ramblin Conrad's in the early 70's. Cool music store. Never new the history.
