Subject: can anyone tell me the name of this song

I am looking for the title of a song for a friend. The lyrics go something like : When the shot and shell were screaming across the battlefield, the boys in blue were marching their noble flag to shield, when came the crazy cry from a brave captain "Look boys the flag is down, who'll volunteer to save it from disgrace?" and the chorus is : Just break the news to mother she knows how dearly I love her........There is more but the lyrics escape me. Would be thankfull of any information that anyone can give.

Thanks for posting, Revel2k. Please come and visit again. If you post more requests for song lyrics, please put some of the lyrics in the thread title. The reason for this is that there's a feature here called a "Forum Search" that can search thread titles but not the content of the threads, so anyone else who is also looking for the same song is more likely to find your thread if the title has a part of the song in the title.

You can access this special search feature by clicking on the "Quick Links" pop-up box (located on the Forum page as well as at the top of this page) and scrolling down to "Forum Search". Then enter a key word or phrase of the song you want in the "Subject" field (in this case, "Mother" or "Break the News" would bring up, among others, the thread that Sorcha posted a link to). There's also the "DigiTrad" (Digital Tradition) search feature in the blue box to explore. Have fun at the 'Cat!

Arnold Keith Storm recorded this for us on his Folk-Legacy album titled Take the News to Mother, now available only as a cassette, I'm afraid, Keith was a mail carrier in Indianapolis, lives in Mooresville, Indiana, learned his songs from his father and uncles. Bloody fine singer, too!
