Subject: How do 'shop' links get att'd to posts? From: technission Date: 17 Feb 02 - 02:51 PM Greetings, any and all, I noticed just now that two "Shop" links are attached to a prior post of mine. I have no objection, in theory, but I did not participate in producing the CDs they link too nor do I profit from them in any way. I am wondering if the links got there by accident, and somebody who can claim these on their resume is missing having these links correctly attached to postings of theirs? On the flip side, if there is music I particularly favor, and would like to promote, is it possible to stipulate that those links be attached to my posts even if I am not the musician, publisher, author etc.? Thanks for info Mudcatters! Michael |

From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 17 Feb 02 - 02:55 PM The Mudcat goes through your message posts, and if it detects a song or recording containing the word in your message, it goes into that line called Shop. This links to a reseller who sells that recording. It's a method of support for Mudcat if someone buys such a recording linked through Mudcat at this company, whose name escapes me right now. |

From: Jeri Date: 17 Feb 02 - 03:00 PM I believe what the 'Shop' thingie is intended to do is compare words in a post to song titles in the database of vendors who sell through Mudcat in case anyone might be interested in a recording. It just can't figure out if you're actually using a word as a song title or something else. |
Subject: RE: BS: How do 'shop' links get att'd to posts? From: Jeri Date: 17 Feb 02 - 03:14 PM Amazon, CDNow and CD Universe are companies which give Mudcat a small amount if you go to them through the link here. Click the fish-jumping-out-of-banjo-Help-Support-The-Mudcat logo at the top of the page for more companies. I believe the song title database may come from just Folk Legacy and Camsco, but I'm guessing. They donate a percentage of the price of an order, probably a bit more than the "LinkShare" folks on the support page. The people who own/run Folk Legacy (Sandy Paton) and Camsco (Dick Greenhaus) are also Mudcat members, so it's easy to ask about recordings in a thread or by PM. When Max first got the green "Shop" thingie working, some of us had a bit of silly fun seeing how many song titles we could get to come up by how we worded our posts. (Ok, maybe it was just me, but I'm easily amused.) |

Subject: RE: BS: How do 'shop' links get att'd to posts? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 19 Feb 02 - 01:18 AM Yes, this does sound like a source of mild amusement. Put enough key words in your discussion and see how many attach themselves. I've wondered about the links on my posts, but haven't been curious enough to track them down. I shop at Amazon quite a lot. If I link to Amazon through Mudcat, even though Amazon greets me by name and processes my order to do with literary criticism or environmental philosophy, it will still know to send something to Mudcat? Good deal! SRS |

From: JudeL Date: 19 Feb 02 - 05:51 AM Just to note for uk catters it doesn't link to amazon.co.uk, which is the British site, it links to the American based version which charges in dollars and has different postage and packaging costs as it bases it's shipping charges on the cost from America. I don't know if Max knows a way round this if so perhaps he can let us know as I often use the uk site and it would be good to be able to help support mudcat as do so. |
