Subject: Very Strange CD Question... From: GUEST,Paulie Date: 17 Feb 02 - 03:32 PM Can anyone explain why saliva can 'stain' a CD? Have you ever blown dust of a CD and accidentally wet it with some saliva? After you wipe the saliva off, there's a mark left on the CD? These things are made of plastic, aren't they? WHAT is causing the mark? They don't wipe off. Is this harmful to the CD? This is not a joke post, by the way... On a related topic -- What are better CD cleaners, dry cloths or those 'wet' systems? Thanks! |

From: ddw Date: 17 Feb 02 - 04:40 PM Paulie, Don't know if this will speak directly to your question, but I started a thread with a similar question awhile back. Help: What makes CDs go hinky; Can it be fixed to see if anything help with your problem. cheers, david

Copy and past this: Help: What makes CDs go hinky; Can it be fixe into the search function and it should pull up the thread. If that fails, I can refresh it for you. cheers, david |

Subject: RE: BS: Very Strange CD Question... From: Gary T Date: 17 Feb 02 - 05:11 PM I'd be curious to see if plain water would cause a similar mark. I'm guessing that some of the liquid has seeped into tiny grooves and is very difficult to wipe/dry effectively. I'd at least rinse the saliva off thoroughly with water and reinspect it after it's fully dry. |
Subject: RE: BS: Very Strange CD Question... From: GUEST,Paulie Date: 17 Feb 02 - 05:38 PM It might be worth going over the spot with water, then wipe it with a lint-free cloth. I just don't get why saliva would produce a film. I tried rubbing the CD repeatedly with a special CD wiper, but it still remains faintly. Doesn't affect the sound, as far as I can tell, but it's an odd thing... I may get one of those 'wet' cleaning gizmos. I mean, it IS an Ennio Morricone CD, after all... Thanks for the input! |
Subject: RE: BS: Very Strange CD Question... From: Gary T Date: 17 Feb 02 - 05:54 PM My thought, Paulie, was not that it left a film but that the liquid sticking in the tiny grooves changed their refractive index. That would certainly affect the appearance. Just a guess, though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Very Strange CD Question... From: rangeroger Date: 17 Feb 02 - 07:24 PM Saliva contains digestive enzymes.I don't think they would harm the plastic on the CD, but spit ain't just water. rr |
Subject: RE: BS: Very Strange CD Question... From: Snuffy Date: 17 Feb 02 - 08:33 PM I've heard that sticking a CD in the dishwasher will clean it up real good, but I've never been brave enough to try it! |
Subject: RE: BS: Very Strange CD Question... From: GUEST,Paulie Date: 18 Feb 02 - 10:26 AM I tried dabbing a very little bit of tap water on the CD spot that looked filmy, then rubbed it gently with a cloth. Whatever was there is now gone...looks as good as new! Go figure...! |
