Subject: Martin Carter and Graham Jones
From: GUEST,Barbara Neill-Bottle

Does anyone know what happened to Martin Carter and Graham Jones? They used to play folk clubs in the late 70s; they had a very distinctive style and Graham Jones used to play fretless bass.

I'd love to know if there are any recordings around.

Cheers

I played Piano, Vibes and Flute with the Lads from 1977 to 1979
in England and Holland. I also have been looking for the Carter Jones Duo.

I can be reached at mrcosmo@bellsouth.net

There was an album - can't remember the title. Graham Jones had a unique style on the intricately carved fretless bass, made for him by his brother. Despite it being an easily-identifiable one-off instrument, it was stolen from their car, and as far as I know was never reecovered. Graham Jones appeared at Fylde some years back in a Leeds-based band called Caravanserai, but I haven't heard or senn anything of him since.

Local (Fylde) musicians Band from the Wood still include the odd Carter/Jones song in their set.

Didnt Martin Carter move to Edinburgh?

Martin did indeed move to Scotland. he did venture down here a few times and played at the Bacca Pipes in Keighley at least once. I have a recording of that somewhere, must have been around 1984 or 5. I knew martin when he lived in Bingley with Liz. I also have 2 CDRs worth of material from the duo taken from the radio and also from recordings done in a friends front room.

I seem to have this recollection of them singing a song called Someplace In Japan.

It started: "Stomu Yamatushka lived someplace in Japan / Very easy-going, a gentle kind of man..."

And the chorus went "No more Nagasaki, the seagulls seem to say. / We've seen it once and that's enough - Do you know what we mean?"

I've googled it and can't find it. I've almost certainly spelled the Japanese man's name wrong. It's possible it wasn't Carter and Jones - it was a very long time ago. I might even have dreamed the whole thing!

But I do remember Graeme's fretless bass.

For anyone 'into' audio torrents who might be a member of Dimeadozen, there is a recently seeded selection of recordings of these two. Some from the radio, some in someone's room. I guess you may need to be a member to access the link but here's a try:

I saw them at least once in Blackpool - they were brilliant - my mate at the time recorded (he had a professional tape recorder) most or all of the songs, with Martin & Graham's permission - I have them now as MP3's and they still sound brilliant - good music goes on for ever!!

I can email them if anyone is interested or post them onto ??? a site for people to access?

Actually my son has set up a website, so that might a good place to put them> I'll investigate....Happy New Year all....

Hi, Steve
Carter and Jones were always great favourites at the old Blackpool Folk Club. I remember them playing the Raikes a couple of times, possibly even earlier at the King's Arms, Talbot Road.

I would much appreciate mp3s if you can get them to me. If you log in to Mudcat as a member (drop-down menu in the Quick Links box above) you can use the PM facility to send me your email details (safer than posting them in the Forum).

I'd also like to hear news of them. I saw them play at various places in the Lake District in the mid 70s and they stayed with me a short time while they were setting up in London around '78. I saw them play a Radio 2 folk session at that time, which someone, somewhere, might have recorded. Like Malcolm, also saw them in the cellar at the Star & Garter and also a pub in Putney where they had a drummer and other musicians; maybe Mr Cosmo was part of the outfit. Martin's songwriting and incredible guitar playing has never left me. I'd really like to hear those MP3s.

I'm amazed to find these threads. I've been trying to find out for years what happened to Martin Carter. His was such a talent that I couldn't believe that he'd sunk without trace. I even wrote to Mike Harding at Radio 2 to see whether he knew what had happened to him, but he didn't seem to have heard of him. I went to an awards ceremony in Leeds in the early 70s when Carter won a recording contract, with the DJM label (I think).

I remember two albums - a green one called 'The Ups and Downs' and another one, an earlier one I think, whose name I can't remember.

It seems to be impossible to buy his music. I was wondering what it might take to tempt you to burn this music you have, Jon. I'd be your best mate and all that. No, seriously, it's a blimmin' cheek, but what would it take to twist your arm? I would dearly love to hear and have that wonderful stuff again.

i've a couple of poorly recorded cassettes of gigs which at this point i can't digitise because i ain't got the equipment. but at some point i hope to be able to do that and am happy to pass the results on to anyone interested. as i say, the quality of the recordings is poor at best.

I am Liz's son Leigh. I too have been wondering and at times trying to find out what happened to Martin. He was such an inspiration to me musically as he lived with us for 10 years or so. I am a musician (mainly drums but also guitar, bass and a bit of piano) and it's all down to Martin and Grahams influence on me as a boy. I have changed my surname since then to Stothard. If anyone comes across him please tell him I am looking for him. Thanks.

I would love to have a copy of any mp3's of Martin Carter and Graham Jones.    Back in 1980, Colin Holt (now well-known in the north east) and I used to perform 'The Slow Lowlands of Holland' around the South Yorkshire folk club and Arts Centre Circuit.
If I could get hold of any recordings, I would also pass them on to Colin, as I know he would be pleased to hear them again too.

In the Eights I was in the String in Amsterdam with Dab Hand. On the wall were a few hundred Broken Guitar strings each one with a signiture of it's owner. Yes a Martin Carter string was on the wall as well and in the entrance was an advertisement selling an LP featuring both Martin and Graham. The LP The Hermit with the Mountain Ash Band can still be found on The Gemm website You will not belive the price. However it will send you pricing up you vinal colection.
I last contact I had with Martin was when the Bacca Pipes Folk Club tracked him down to Glasgow and he came down to Keighly to do a solo Booking.

Hi, I knew Martin & Graham back in the mid to late seventies, I lived in Amsterdam and we had the same agent Anikke Zwetsloot, was there when they got all their gear nicked outside the Adam & Eve
youth hotel the second night after arriving.

The last I heard of Martin he'd definitely moved to Glasgow, I did a gig in King Tuts Wha Wha around 1995 with Steve Gibbons and left one of our CDs on their Juke Box, couple of months later we were playing at the Grove in Leeds and a guy came up to me and said Martin had heard the CD in King Tut's and said hello, like you all I've tried many searches but got nowhere, one possibility mentioned to me was that he may have changed his name to "Spider" or "Spyder" have tried Googling that to no avail.

Had many pretty wild nights with them in Amsterdam one being jamming in a club called the Kikaboo near the Vondel Park untill 10.00 in the morning then having to pay to get out of the place along with Cosmo aka Perry Tillman, if anyone has any more info I'd be very grateful, must admit to being a bit fearful for him.

Cheers Jon

I have wondered for many years what became of Martin Carter and hope eventually to find out. I first saw him perform at the George folk club in Cleckheaton and went to many of his concerts both before and after he teamed up with Graham. They eventually became known as the Carter Jones Band.

Martin had a weekly 30 minute folk music show on Radio Leeds and appeared with Graham on Radio 1 Folk 78. I recorded those performances on cassette and being taken off the radio the quality is good. I also recorded a special broadcast by radio Leeds of Morley Folk festival featuring Martin and Graham plus Vin Garbutt, although I don't have   the recording of Vin Garbutt. I have since transferred all these recordings to CD's along with some recordings I made on a portable cassette recorder at Martin's folk club performances in West Yorkshire, the quality of these is poor but precious.

I have the original Vinyl LP "Ups and Downs". I would very much like to get a copy of Martin's first album, which was a limited issue.

Martin appeared with other folk musicians as the Mountain Ash Band and and made one album. A copy of which was recently sold on ebay for over £300!

I can't add anything to the 'where are they now?' thread, but remember, as a music prod and folk show presenter at BBC Radio Leeds, recording a set from Martin. I had the honour to record many excellent musicians in the early 80s at the BBC on Woodhouse Lane, but Martin stands out in my mind... he just sat down and rattled off song after song, faultlessly. All were excellent spine-tingling self-penned songs, including No More Nagasaki mentioned above. Beautiful music from a talented and genuinely nice bloke.

Hello, I was a good friend of Martin Carter in the late 70's as he lived next door but one to me in Bingley for a year or two. When he appeared on radio 2 Folk 78 with Jonnie Silver I recorded it on cassette and still have the recording. Martin was an excellent musician and worked really hard to get himself some decent exposure nationally and in Holland where he often went for a short tour. He taught me guitar techniques, helped me write soem songs and we had a lot of fun together. At one time he had a full band and recorded a number of demo tracks for a manager, but then the money ran out and the project died down. He moved out of his partner Liz's home and then simply disappeared as far as I knew around 1980. It was good to read Leigh Stoddart's contribution above as I knew leigh as well and used to "babysit" for him and his sister Fiona if mum and martin were at a gig. I knew Leigh had become a musician (and a cook!) but had not realised how much of an inspiration Martin had been on him, but considering how much he influenced me, its not surprising. At the time I also knew Jon Sesions and Graham Jones and in fact I sold them a wonderful old Wolseley car around 1978! Now what happened to that?

Hi There
I know where Martin Carter is, he was living in Glasgow for many years before he moved to Mallorca in the early 90's, still writing and performing. You can hear some of his later songs and possibly ones he played in the folk clubs on
www.cdbaby.com/spida1
He moved to mainland Spain and travelled and performed in India and then moved onto Portugal where he now performs as part of a duo "Neo's Dream" he's got new songs on
www.myspace.com/neosdream
If you want to get in touch with him you can email him om
martincartermusic@yahoo.com
The reason I know so much about what he's been up to is because we've been together for the past decade, and it was really interesting to hear stories from people who knew him from before.
Peace, love and good things

I grew up in Ilkley and saw them play in, I think, the Rose and Crown, late 70's. Loved the bass & catchy songs. Only have vauge memories of them now, a song about Bristol maybe. Buried in my reel to reel tapes I think I may have a recording of a Radio Leeds broadcast..    be amazing if we could get some recordings online.....

I saw these lads perform in the seventies in an Amsterdam folkmusicpub the Folk Fairport. They were quite good musicians; I still remember the names!

Bumped into Martin and his lady - Emer in Portugal at a bar called the Pickle and Pie ( or could be called the Pie and Pickle )an upstairs bar by the Marina at Lagos , Portugal.
As I write, it is the intention that they do a gig here every Sunday , but times change very quickly !!!
Their gig lasted from 6.00 pm until 9.30pm with a 15 mins break - how about THAT in the UK ????
Martin was in great form and ably accompanied by Emer.
Lots of good time music (no Matty Groves etc. ) as you would expect at a holiday location.
He's in good nick - not an ounce of fat on him and still has brown short hair.
He calls himself "Spyda" these days - that's entirely up to him Eh ?
I asked about Graham and and he told me that over the years he had tried to contact him - to no avail.
If anyone is in that part of the world the bar I mentioned is no more than 200 metres from Lagos railway station so it might be a day out from another location on the Algarve.
The duo is called Neo's dream and can be seen at -
WWW.myspace.com / neos dream.
Should you be close to Martin / Spyda you can contact him via his lady Emer .........
emer.ge@hotmail.com
Delight to see him again.
