Subject: Visiting the UK this summer From: Suffet Date: 17 Feb 02 - 10:21 PM It looks very likely that Marilyn and I will be visiting the UK this summer, probably for 10 to 14 days somewhere between July 20 and August 4, 2002. Suggestions, comments, etc., are welcome. We'll be passing through London on our way in and out, and we plan to visit Cecil Sharp House as we did in 1999. Is Tuesday the night Sharp's Folk Club meets downstairs? We also plan to visit my distant cousin Alisha Suffet, a singer of some note in her own right. The Sufits of England and the Suffets of America are branches of the same family. --- Steve |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: Chris Amos Date: 18 Feb 02 - 01:44 AM Hi Suffet, Tuesday is indeed still the night for Sharps, and you will just catch it before the August shut down. See you there. A lot of clubs are shut down at that time but there are a large number of festivals, both large and small going on around the place. A good site for info on these is Froots Magazine, they update their festival list in March. Chris |

Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: nutty Date: 18 Feb 02 - 12:41 PM Looks like you could well be around for Warwick Folk Festival ...... definitely not one to miss and the town is wonderful as well. Not sure of the date at present but its usually the end on July. |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: nutty Date: 18 Feb 02 - 12:45 PM I found the festival info WARWICK FOLK FESTIVAL |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: Raggytash Date: 18 Feb 02 - 01:36 PM Do you have a tour worked out, if so does it include the north, as Dave the Gnome has asked. There are numerous festivals during your visit and various clubs. If you can give some indication of your preferred locations we will all give you info. Cheers Raggytash (In West Yorkshire, which sits next to God's county, The County Palatine of Lancashire!) |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: JeZeBeL Date: 18 Feb 02 - 01:56 PM Excuse me Raggytash, but I do believe you are mistaken. Gods county is Yorkshire!! of course. I know this was probably some lancashire hacker hacking into your message and writing this nonsense. Everyone knows how good yorkshire is. lol |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: Mr Red Date: 18 Feb 02 - 06:21 PM If you see a red mist in Warwick at the FF it will be the webmeister of cresby.com which will guide around the greater area of Gloucestershire and attached bits. Folkwise that is. There is a lot of folk over here and it is a little more close together but a lot of it is cosey rather than commercial. |

Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: Les from Hull Date: 18 Feb 02 - 07:32 PM Warwick is an excellent festival - featuring the Johnson Girls last year. Maggie and I go every year and can recommend it. There'll be quite a few other 'catters around, too. Tone d'F - Any decent meteorologist will tell you that the prevailing wind blows from Lancashire to Yorkshire. And don't we suffer for it! |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: Suffet Date: 18 Feb 02 - 09:41 PM Thanks for the information and offers. I certainly will check out Warwick and I will also contact individuals once our plans are set. I am very familiar with the Johnson Girls. I serve with three of them (and with a dozen other people) on the board of directors of the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club, and one of those three has become a good personal friend. Marilyn and I will try to time our visit so we get to Sharps on a Tuesday evening in July. Back in '99 we had a really pleasant time, having sought the place out on the recommendation of a woman named Tara whom we met here in New York. If anyone knows her, please send her our regards. By the way, my cousin's name is Alisha Sufit, not Suffet. The two spellings are simply different transliterations of the same original name. Hannibal's father, Hamilcar Barca, held the title Suffet of Carthage, and Hannibal himself took that title late in his life. It meant a judge or civil ruler in Phoenician. My own name and Alisha's derive from the Hebrew title Shofit, which also means judge or civil ruler, as in the Book of Judges. More suggestions for the summer are certainly welcome. --- Steve |

Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: Chris Amos Date: 21 Feb 02 - 02:02 AM Suffet, I went to Sharps on Tuesday and there is some doubt if there will be a get together on the last Tuesday of July. 30th as it is too near the start of Sidmouth. The 23rd is happening. Regards Chris |

Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: Suffet Date: 19 Jun 06 - 07:59 AM Greetings: I am reviving this old thread because this summer I am actually visiting the UK for the first time since 1999. Although my wife and I have intended to make the trip since 2002, something always came up, mostly matters of health or finance. But now our flights, trains, and hotels are booked. Barring any last minute emergency, we will arrive in London on the evening of July 16, 2002. We will take the train to Cardiff on Thursday, July 20, return to London on Monday, July 24, and head home to the USA on Wednesday, July 26. Aside from the singers night and party at Sharps Folk Club on July 25, the evening before we leave the UK, we have no definite plans. We do have a copy of the June-July issue of Folk London, and we already know we'll be in Cardiff while Sharps is having its summer weekend folk festival. However, we have never been to Wales, so we are not changing our plans. Any suggestions would be welcome, particularly where to go and what to do in and around Cardiff. Thanks. --- Steve Suffet |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: GUEST,John Barden at work Date: 19 Jun 06 - 09:01 AM You could always try Llantrisant Folk Club:- http://www.folkwales.org.uk/folk.html. They run every Wednesday |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: Suffet Date: 19 Jun 06 - 09:29 AM ...we will arrive in London on the evening of July 16, 2002... Yipes! I am still fixated with the past. The truth be told, we plan to arrive in London on the evening of July 16, 2006, unless we get sucked into a rip in the time-space continuum. --- Steve |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: Anne Lister Date: 19 Jun 06 - 09:37 AM If you're in Wales on a Thursday night, try the Newport folk club at the Lyceum Tavern. Small but fun. Wednesday,as someone has already said, would be Llantrisant. As to what to do in Cardiff - you should get yourselves to St Fagans, the Welsh Folk Museum. Lots of fascinating buildings, lots of information on how things were. Then there's the medieval village experience of Cosmeston, out towards Penarth. And I have to recommend Llancaiach Fawr, where you step back into 1645 and meet the servants of Colonel Prichard in the middle of our Civil War. Then there are castles, hills, standing stones, churches, hill forts, beaches, forest walks, a mining museum, some good art galleries, the Millennium Stadium and the Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay ...how much time did you say you had? LOL Send me a private email for more details of any or all of these! Anne |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: GUEST,bbc at work Date: 19 Jun 06 - 11:19 AM Just horning in on this thread for any interested UK Mudcatters--My son davidmc24 (who created the Mudcat member pages) & I will be over this summer as well, visiting Bill Sables, from August 1-10, 2006. Perhaps we'll meet some of you? best, Barbara |

Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: stallion Date: 20 Jun 06 - 04:39 AM Hi Steve We are actually doing a gig at the York Folk club on the 20th of July (quite rare for home town performers) a good session Friday 21st , at the Tap & Spile. We would love to return the welcome given to us by Pinewoods last year. Good luck with your trip and enjoy. Peter (Ron & Martin) |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: sian, west wales Date: 20 Jun 06 - 05:50 AM Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau will be on the weekend of your Welsh visit - a long way from Cardiff but I'll be going (probably on the Saturday) and if you'd like to come I can get you there and back, and give you a bed as required. You'd see a good dollop of Wales in the process! Sesiwn's accoustic stage is worth the visit - the rest has gone WAY too 'pop' for my tastes. Pity you aren't in Cardiff for a Monday night. That's the Welsh session at the Mochyn Du. The above suggestions are also spot-on. And Tabster's right: you MUST do St Fagan's, currently officially called the Welsh History Museum, or some such. I think Sorcha and Leadfingers enjoyed Castell Coch just up the valley from St F's too; hunting lodge of the family who expanded Cardiff Castle to it's current ... OK: glory. If you're here in West Wales, do try to see some of the WELSH castles in the Towy Valley (around Llandeilo). Again, a bed can be made available... sian |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: Saro Date: 20 Jun 06 - 06:55 AM If you are still in London on July 22/23 Sharps is running a folk festival at C# house, with John Spiers and Jon Boden + Craig Morgan Robson and others on Saturday, and the Coppers + Devils Interval + others on Sunday. It hasn't been very widely advertised, but I am assured that it is happening! Sarah |

Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: Suffet Date: 20 Jun 06 - 07:24 PM Everybody, thank you for the information. I may be contacting some of you individually as the time approaches. Sian, it's very unlikely that my wife and I will get to Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau, but we certainly intend to go to St. Fagan's. We will likely take some day trips out of Cardiff as well. Peter, we've been to the Tap and Spile in Whitby. The first time we heard the name we thought it was the Tuppence Pile. It took us more than a day to get used to the accent. As you know, we have also been to the Black Swan and to Trafalgar Bay in York. We shall return some day, if for no other reason than I may record Turpin Hero on my next CD and I want to check out the places mentioned in the song. Sarah, we know about the festival at the Cecil Sharp House from the listing in Folk London. However, we will be in Cardiff that weekend. We do intend to be at Sharps for the singers' night and party on Tuesday, July 25. Anne, we said four days. There is no need to laugh! --- Steve |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: Suffet Date: 28 Jul 06 - 08:45 AM Greetings: We arrived home to New York City late Wednesday night, July 26, just after our area of Western Queens emerged from a nine day loss of electric power. The lights are back on for now, although we had to toss out all the food from our fridge. We wish to say a great big THANK YOU to all the wonderful people we met at the Herga Folk Club at the Harrow Arts Centre and at the Sharps Folk Club at Cecil Sharp House. You were so kind and gracious, and we had such a lovely time. We promise we shall return to London soon, although we don't know when. --- Steve & Marilyn Suffet |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: Micca Date: 28 Jul 06 - 09:00 AM Steve, it was a pleasure to meet with you and Marilyn at Sharps on Tuesday, (and your "Stealth" guitar) and to hear you sing, hope to meet up with you guys again on some future trip, Micca and CatsPHiddle |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: George Papavgeris Date: 28 Jul 06 - 11:49 AM Steve, Marilyn, you're welcome again, any time. |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: Suffet Date: 28 Jul 06 - 08:30 PM George, Micca, CatsPHiddle, and everyone else: thank you once again. Marilyn and I shall return, and we hope it won't be another seven years before we do so. For those who do not understand the reference, my Stealth Guitar is a Martin 00CXAE whose dull black body resembles that of a Stealth Bomber. It's made of some nearly indestructible synthetic material, and as such it is well suited for airplane travel. The tone is... well, let me just say it's something I have grown to accept, almost appreciate. --- Steve |
Subject: RE: Visiting the UK this summer From: bbc Date: 28 Jul 06 - 09:45 PM I'm glad to hear you had a good time, Steve. My son & I will be leaving this coming Tuesday & will be visiting Bill & Lorna Sables from August 1-10. I wonder if I will meet any of the British 'catters? bbc |

Subject: RE: Visiting the UK in the fall of 2008 From: Suffet Date: 10 Aug 07 - 10:46 PM Greetings: It looks like Marilyn and I will make our next hop over to the UK in the fall of 2008, possibly in September but more likely in October. We may be traveling with another couple from New York, Anne Price and her husband Wayne. Anne, as you may know, is a folk singer of considerable talent. Click here to visit Anne's website. We will probably start off in London, head up to York or thereabouts, and then go to either Glasgow or Edinburgh before turning back to go home. We figure to do this in about two weeks' time. If we get a chance to perform once in each of the three cities we visit we would be more than grateful. Is there any folk club who would like to put us on for an evening? Although we sing quite a few songs together, we are both essentially soloists, so whoever books us gets two featured performers for the price of one. If anyone is interested, or can point us in the right direction, please contact me by e-mail rather than PM. I check my e-mail at least once a day, but I sometimes do not go onto Mudcat for a week or more. Oh, if you give me your postal mailing address, I can send a press kit that contains a CD with recent live performances as well as studio tracks. In the meantime, if you go to my SoundClick music page, you can listen to Anne and me sing duet on A Shantyman's Life. You can also listen to me sing Don't Let Your Deal Go Down, with Anne joining in on the choruses. Even if we are not featured guest performers, we still intend to visit folk clubs, singing pubs, and other folk friendly venues. Please rest assured that neither of us needs to be coaxed to do a floor spot. Thanks. --- Steve Suffet |
