Subject: Searching for song: Leave me Lucille?
From: ra_enright@juno.com
Date: 19 Mar 98 - 12:00 PM

Hi...

I've been using the Digital Tradition for a while now to find some songs that I can only remember snatches of, that my dad used to sing when I was young. I've had success with almost all of them, but I still can't find one. I think it's called "Leave Me Lucille" but I'm not sure. All I remember is two lines of the chorus:

"You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille, Four hungry children and a crop in the field, You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille."

If anyone could help me find the full lyrics, I'd be very grateful...

Ra

Isn't that the song about the guy who was coming down the mountain road, bouncing over bumps with no brakes when he saw his wheel go careening off in front of him.... and he sang, " you picked afine time to leave me loose wheel."

Richard

How do you find it? The question is how can you avoid it. Well, it's not done quite so incessently as it used to be.

Subject: Lyr Add: LUCILLE (Roger Bowling, Hal Bynum)
From: Lorenzo
Date: 19 Mar 98 - 07:37 PM

Hello,

I sing with a bluegrass/country/folk group here in northern California and I get requests for this on occaision...here are the lyrics I sing:

LUCILLE
(Roger Bowling, Hal Bynum, 1977)

In a bar in Toledo, across from the depot
On a bar stool she takes off her ring
I thought I'd get closer, so I walked on over
I sat down and asked her her name
When the drinks finally hit her, she said I'm no quitter
But I've finally quit living on dreams
I'm hungry for laughter, and here ever after
I'm after what ever the other life brings

In the mirror I saw him, and I closely watched him
I thought how he looked out of place
He came to the woman, that sat there beside me
He had a strange look on his face
His big hands were caloused, he looked like a mountain
For a minute I thought I was dead
But he started shakin', his big heart was breakin'
He turned to the woman and said...

Chorus:
You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille
With four hungry children, and a crop in the field
I've had some bad times, lived through some sad times
But this time your hurtin' won't heal
You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille

After he left us, I ordered more whiskey
I thought how she'd made him look small
From the lights of the bar-room, to a rented hotel room
We walked without talkin' at all
She was a beauty, and when she came to me
I'll bet she thought I'd lost my mind
'cause I couldn't hold her, the words that he'd told her
Kept comin' back time after time..
Chorus:

I hope this helps...no guarantee of accuracy...

Regards,

Lorenzo

Whew! That was fast:) Thanks everyone, I appreciate the lyrics. Apparently it's my aversion to Kenny Rogers that kept me from finding it...I didn't know he sang it originally, I only ever heard it when my dad sang it(ninety percent of the folk/bluegrass I know comes from memories that are fifteen years old).

Anyhow, thanks again. Loose wheel....funny:D

Kenny Rogers, for God's sake? Who has done more damage, over the last 25 years, to the artistic image of country (I won't use the term "rural acoustic") music than Kenny Rogers? He is best thought of as a comedy act. Only an opinion.

I have written a Kenny Rogers song that I use when people request something by him. It is inherently ridiculous and rarely does anyone doubt that it's his.

Maybe I'm too sensitive on this, but if you've tried to present country music (from some contemporaries like Nancy Griffith, for example, back to too old to tell) with thoughtful integrity long enough, you get awfully tired of requests for Kenny Rogers and Jimmy Buffett (I wrote one for him, too, called "Coconuts for Brains". Even the dedicated Parrotheads rarely blink an eye).

Venting frustration, Chet W.

Subject: Lyr Add: WAITING FOR ME (from Kenny Rogers)
From: chet w
Date: 24 Mar 98 - 07:35 PM

For Tiger:

WAITING FOR ME
by Kenny Rogers (cw)

(Must be done with much sensitiveness)

I been working all day, you been sitting at home
Watching TV
I get excited thinking of you all alone
Waiting for me
When five o'clock rolls around
I'll make you the happiest woman in town
Just you and me, baby, just you and me

(Bridge) Frozen dinners in the microwave
Soon be ready to eat
I'll drink a couple of six-packs
And we'll make love till I fall asleep

Six o'clock in the morning I roll over and say
How 'bout one for the road
Then I jump in my truck and I drive it to work
You sit at home in our trailer
Watching them soap operas on TV
Waiting for me, baby, waiting for me

Audiences love it

See next message,
Chet W.

Subject: Lyr Add: COCONUTS FOR BRAINS (Jimmy Buffet)
From: chet w
Date: 24 Mar 98 - 07:44 PM

Tiger, here's the other one

COCONUTS FOR BRAINS
by Jimmy Buffet (cw)
(Bouncy Caribbean beat)

Out on the beach with the radio on
Digging my toes in the sand
Had to get out of the water again
Is this a shrimp in my hand?

(Chorus) Co, co, co, Coconuts
I got coconuts for brains
Don't know enough to come in out of the rain
I got coconuts for brains

Lemon and lime and a bottle of rum
Burning a hole in my head
If I don't take a hot shower tonight
I think this tuna is dead

(Repeat chorus)

Please add more verses as you see fit.

Chet W.

Exploiting this thread for my own venting: I will offer my soul (tainted as it is) to anyone that can detroy all copies of Celine Dion's Titanic song. This piece holds the record for being the quickest entry in the "Most Over-played Song" category. Say, about what, two days?
