Subject: Searching for song: Leave me Lucille? From: ra_enright@juno.com Date: 19 Mar 98 - 12:00 PM Hi... I've been using the Digital Tradition for a while now to find some songs that I can only remember snatches of, that my dad used to sing when I was young. I've had success with almost all of them, but I still can't find one. I think it's called "Leave Me Lucille" but I'm not sure. All I remember is two lines of the chorus:
"You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille, Four hungry children and a crop in the field,
If anyone could help me find the full lyrics, I'd be very grateful...

Subject: Lyr Add: LUCILLE (Roger Bowling, Hal Bynum) From: Lorenzo Date: 19 Mar 98 - 07:37 PM Hello, I sing with a bluegrass/country/folk group here in northern California and I get requests for this on occaision...here are the lyrics I sing: LUCILLE (Roger Bowling, Hal Bynum, 1977) In a bar in Toledo, across from the depot On a bar stool she takes off her ring I thought I'd get closer, so I walked on over I sat down and asked her her name When the drinks finally hit her, she said I'm no quitter But I've finally quit living on dreams I'm hungry for laughter, and here ever after I'm after what ever the other life brings
In the mirror I saw him, and I closely watched him |

Subject: RE: Searching for song: Leave me Lucille? From: Ra Date: 20 Mar 98 - 10:37 AM Whew! That was fast:) Thanks everyone, I appreciate the lyrics. Apparently it's my aversion to Kenny Rogers that kept me from finding it...I didn't know he sang it originally, I only ever heard it when my dad sang it(ninety percent of the folk/bluegrass I know comes from memories that are fifteen years old). |
Subject: RE: Searching for song: Leave me Lucille? From: chet w Date: 21 Mar 98 - 12:26 PM Kenny Rogers, for God's sake? Who has done more damage, over the last 25 years, to the artistic image of country (I won't use the term "rural acoustic") music than Kenny Rogers? He is best thought of as a comedy act. Only an opinion. I have written a Kenny Rogers song that I use when people request something by him. It is inherently ridiculous and rarely does anyone doubt that it's his. Maybe I'm too sensitive on this, but if you've tried to present country music (from some contemporaries like Nancy Griffith, for example, back to too old to tell) with thoughtful integrity long enough, you get awfully tired of requests for Kenny Rogers and Jimmy Buffett (I wrote one for him, too, called "Coconuts for Brains". Even the dedicated Parrotheads rarely blink an eye). Venting frustration, Chet W. |

From: Sheye Date: 25 Mar 98 - 10:21 AM Exploiting this thread for my own venting: I will offer my soul (tainted as it is) to anyone that can detroy all copies of Celine Dion's Titanic song. This piece holds the record for being the quickest entry in the "Most Over-played Song" category. Say, about what, two days? |
