Anyone know a tune called "Is there anyone here knows General jackson?" Its in William irwin's tunebook (19thc english lake district fiddler) but ive never seen or heard of it elsewhere. any american versions still knockingaround? from the title i suppose its probably american. its a 4-part tune with a little bit in the middle markd "voice" where you sing "is there anyone here knows general jackson, yes, i'm the man knows general jackson" ive been wondering about this tune for thirty years, maybe you Mudcatters will find another version for me cheers greg

thought i'd refresh this one, not having had a single reply. come on all you clever knowledgable people, someone somewhere must have heard of this tune, it's great. HUGE prize offered for information. take your collective minds off summer holidays, palindromic dates, farts and bob dylan and help me out of my misery cheers greg

Greg, I suggest that you start a new thread with the title "Search for fiddle tune." That might catch someone. There are some fiddle websites- I checked one with no luck- but there are others I don't know about. Also I'm no fiddler, there may be one out there who can help.
There were two well-known General Jacksons- Andrew, who became president, and "Stonewall," who fought for the South in the Civil War. Not that that matters to your search.

Found (Google! Arglebargle!) a just-plain-old "General Jackson", on "Down on the River" CD recorded 1989, John Hartford et al. I ain't familiar -- could that be it??

The clip starts with singing (enough to show that the "General Jackson" is a Miss. River showboat). Then a bit of banjo picking. The clip is from the cd "Down River."

Thought I would refresh this one: assiduous enquiries have still failed to find any reference to the tune our=tside of Gt langdale, Cumbria,England. And I'm sure it must be American.
