Subject: Three Cheers/Hoo-ray For The Red White.. From: GUEST,jeff@opa.wwh.utexas.edu Date: 19 Feb 02 - 01:22 PM I'm trying to find the song that contains--or is named-- either "Three Cheers For The Red White And Blue" or "Hoo-ray For The Red...etc. I think the melody for this is taken from the march "Under The Double Eagle." I am now scoring an old small orchestra version of this march for contemporary concert band and I'd like to have the bandsing the lyrics for one chorus of the Trio. But, I can't find the lyrics anywhere. HELP!!! Best wishes, Jeff |

Subject: Lyr Add: COLUMBIA THE GEM OF THE OCEAN From: GUEST,Gene Date: 19 Feb 02 - 02:24 PM Found this www.google.com search for [three cheers for the red white and blue] O, Columbia! the gem of the ocean, The home of the brave and the free, The shrine if each patriot's devotion, A world offers homage to thee. Thy mandates make heroes assemble When Liberty's form stands in view; Thy banners make tyranny tremble When borne by the Red, White and Blue! When borne by the Red, White and Blue! When borne by the Red, White and Blue! Thy banners make tyranny tremble When borne by the Red, White and Blue! The wine cup, the wine cup bring hither, And fill you it true to the brim! May the wreaths they have won never wither, Nor the star of their glory grow dim! May the service united ne'er sever, But they to their colors prove true! The Army and Navy forever, Three cheers for the red, white and blue, Three cheers for the red, white and blue, Three cheers for the red, white and blue, The Army and Navy forever, Three cheers for the red, white and blue.

"Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean was copyrighted in the United States on April 24, 1843, by George Willig, 171 Chesnut [sic] St., Philadelphia, under the title Columbia the Land of the Brave. This edition probably contains the first printing of the melody: p. [1] has a drawing of an American flag with 26 stars and 25 [sic] stripes. 'Written & Composed by David T. Shaw ... Arranged by T.A. Beckett.' Sung by W.G. Plumer and D.T. Shaw. m. on pp. [1]-[3]. p. [4] blank. Engraved. [...] Interestingly, the words, 'Columbia, the Land of the Brave,' do not appear in the song. The title was changed to the present American title in 1844 in the edition published by Osbourn.... Thomas à Beckett, an English musician and actor, who had long been a resident of Philadelphia, later claimed to be the sole author of the song, but no early edition so states." (James J. Fuld, The Book of World-Famous Music, 4th ed., Dover, 1995, p. 177) ~Masato |
