Is it possible to get hold of a copy of the Mudcat/Banjo Logo ?

I can obviously store the mudsupport-a.gif file, but this is rather small, is it possible to get a larger one ?

Also what are the restrictions on using it ?

Hi Dave, Bill Sabels sells Mudcat badges, they are cheap (I think only 3 pound each), send him a PM.

I'd still like to see stickers for car bumpers or instrument cases. Might raise a buck (or quid) or two for the Cause.

OK, I'll fess up.

One day I got tired of writing down "www.mudcat.org" on little slips of paper to give to other musicians we run into. So (having had some marketing experience), I did up a brochure one could carry in the instrument case, adapted from the copy in Mudcat's main entry page on the front, and a sample thread list plus a couple of excerpts from the thread "Why We Sing" on the back. And the type size on the front was big enough to make for reasonable reading if posted on a bulletin board, say at a music store, venue, etc. (Multi-purpose, see?) It can be e-mailed as an attachment, too.

Max kindly supplied me a logo file and OK'd the concept-- then I dropped the ball. We talked about a few modifications and then I got busy on the spirituals permathread.

Anyway-- the idea was, it could be hung up here in the site as a downloadable item in Word-- to download and print as needed on your own printers. It was on US legal-size paper, 8-1/2 x 14. I just could not get it down to 8-1/2 x 11 and still properly represent all that Mudcat offers.

Shall I get back to it?

~Susan

Maybe it ended up as a PDF file, not Word-- this was after our fire and before the new computer. If I see more interest I'll dig it up. That part of last year is still a little.... scramyxed.

?Speekish dat "scramyxed"?

PS, I think it would be neat if anyone/everyone working on promotional goodies could work as a team-- not a committee (yyyyyyccccccch!).... but be loosely in communication with one another. Maybe it would be less crazymaking for Max too, to have ideas that integrate and that he can OK in an integrated fashion.

So my first question would be, what are the printing specs for paper size for places outside the US? Who would adapt mine, for instance, to create other versions printable from non-US printers? How many versions would we be wanting Max to put up?

Who else would want to look at what I did (when I can find it) and comment on other applications/versions to flow from it?

Dave, I refreshed the thread for you on embroidered Mudcat patches. I've worked as an artist in the screenprint/embroidered garment industry since the early 1980's. Screenprinting was replaced in popularity by embroidery when the baby-boom generation began aging. The embroidery is done by multiple high speed machines running computer tapes of the designs, and most American business was taken over by the cheaper production prices in Hong Kong. There are still many companies in the US that do embroidery production (none of this type of work is done by hand, in case anyone wonders). Here is a page of some examples of embroidery designs I have done for souvenir sportswear companies. Click Here Those designs were directly embroidered on garments, not patches (a hoop is placed on the fabric and a shirt put under each head of the multiple head machine, the thread colors in spools set up on each sewing head, then all heads run the same design, stitching multiple garments at one time.) An embroidered patch can be hot glued to just about anything. Here is a link to the thread on how to order a Mudcat patch.Click Here

Whizzy - the closest European paper format to 8 1/2x11" would be DIN A4. Word can make the conversion in the Print Setup window.

An Acrobat PDF would be useable for more people than a Word document. I can create a PDF for US standard size and for European size if someone wants to give me the text and graphics to lay it out.

Alice, what an offer!

Right now, it's all done in a trial format Max OK'd, with the logo file he supplied built into the page. As he supplied it, it was much clearer than what we can print off the image displayed here in the site. As the piece is now, it looks pretty much like Mudcat already looks-- so that people would see how Mudcat looks. I think what would make sense would be to refine the copy and go with it as is now set up, and then turn it over to you, if it takes off, for a redesign as only you can do it. And I know you would work with Max to OK the design-- after all this is his work we are trying to showcase, including his approach to design.

Now what we need- IMO-- is a PDF, downloadable item that can be printed by the home computer.... AS A STICKER, on standard Avery-type labels. They come pretty big.... as I recall Word, for example, has Avery label numbers keyed into its label-making wizards. Does Acrobat? Alice, can you check what would be possible?

Yeah!!!!! Let's do THAT! Print them as needed! (After Max OK's the idea of course!)

Would it be the Mudcat logo, or would it be a design by Alice?

With permission from Max, we made a few stickers and cheapo badges for 'catters who showed up at the Winfield (Kansas) Festival last September. Stickers were color inkjet printed on Avery label stock.

Unfortunately, even after a half dozen coats of good laquer, the Avery stuff is not very durable. I've still got one in pretty good shape on my fiddle case, but since I don't actually play the thing, it doesn't get out of the house much.

One that I stuck on the tailgate lasted about 3 months before I decided it wasn't good enough to reflect my opinion of mudcat. It does appear that the adhesive is more durable, and will be there indefinitely, barring the unprecedented step of actually washing the truck.

Indoor use only?

John

I've got a couple of stickers that are impervious to wear - they appear to have been made out of tin foil. Anyone have a clue about these types? They are most likely a bit more expensive but for a lifetime of use???

For the last year I have been working part time for a local printer, Lokken Printing, doing graphic design and pre-press preparation. Here are two posters that I designed that were printed at Lokken Printing. The owner, Sumner Lokken, is a mandolin player in our session. We print alot of the concert posters for our area. Anyway, I could relate nightmares about jobs people bring in that have been created in programs such as Word - even Corel is problematic. Word is ok to print off your desktop printer, but never create a brochure in Word if you ever want it professionally printed or to easily share it with other computers. If it is a simple one page, two sided piece, I would use Adobe Illustrator, and save a copy of each side as a PDF. Dimensions can then be offered in A4 size and in 8.5"x11" letter size for the US. I was responding to your idea of a three panel brochure on paper.

A durable weather-resistant label is not something you can print at home. It would be better to set up something like Cafepress, where people who want them can order them one at a time. Cafepress says they plan to offer bumperstickers, but the product isn't available yet. Here is what I recently received from Cafepress as an update on what they offer for custom sale- "You overwhelmingly asked for lower cost, up-sell items, so keep an eye out for new products like bumper stickers, window decals, coasters and other products coming to your store soon!".

Thanks Alice.

The item I created in Word, I think Max resaved as a PDF. (Haven't found it yet.) One reason for doing that, also, would be that once Max OKs text, people ought not to change it, and in document form of course they could.

As it is now it is not a 3-panel brochure in landscape view, it's more like a mailer or flier-- foldable down to business envelope size. 8-1/2 x 14, portrait.

I've just had a quick look through the graphics I can find here - believe it or not, they are in http://www.mudcat.org/graphics/. The best one I have found is http://www.mudcat.org/graphics/mudlogo.gif. I've just had a play with it using Photoshop, cropping the image and increasing the size to 600 pixels wide and it still looks reasonable. Wouldn't this image be good enough for most purposes?

Aha. Legally, the copyright is owned by the guy who drew the logo for Max. Assuming he donated the rights to Max to use it on the internet, any other use should be negotiated with the copyright owner (the guy who drew it).

Alice, what I mean is that I cut the text out and resized it to fit an A4 piece of paper and printed it off on glossy paper. It looks quite good although the black lines could be sharper. I can't imagine anyone wanting to go bigger and reducing an image is very easy...

I was just thinking that if anyone wanted to use the Mudcat logo (with permission of course), they might as well just adapt that gif rather than worrying about Acrobat or Word documents. Maybe I'm wrong.

Jon

Jon, the Acrobat PDF discussion was about a brochure that Susan had already created, including text. The low resolution gif would still not be right for reproduction using film output to make a press plate. The resolution for that should be about 300 dpi, sized to the final product size, and a tiff or eps format. It all depends on what you would be using to reproduce the image - what would the end-use be, not just printing off the computer screen to a desktop printer.

I have a very high res version of the logos. Anyone who contacts via email, I'll send a copy.

The kid who drew the Mudcat was our neighbor. We gave him free access to the courses we were offering at the time, a $700 value. He gave me the design, and all rights to it. He drew the line drawing, I believe black ink on white paper. I digitized it, moved the fish a bit, and colored it.

Norton1, your question about foil labels - there are various kinds of weatherproof labels that can be printed. It is a specialty type of printing. Lokken Printing, where I work, is a dealer for www.discountlabels.com. These should be ordered in large quantities, not something you would get just a few of. Labels can be white, foil colors.... many choices.

Norton1, regarding labels, I also have an account with Discount Labels for my graphic design and illustration freelancing. Labels are handy for putting on CD cases if you are selling CDs and want to customize a message added to the packaging - but again, it is a quantity game, like all printing. The more printed, the lower the unit price. There are minimum quantities - once the press is set up, it prints volume at high speed. I can post prices and label descriptions next week if anyone is interested. I still think getting a sticker on demand instead of ordering a press run is a better way to go.

(dick greenhaus here) The problem we've encountered is that of money. I have several hundred dollars tied up in patches and several hundred more in Tee-shirts. I'm hesitant to tie up still more in stickers or labels.

My experience with self-printed ones isn't too good: paper labels don't last, and mylar ones (the ones you stick to the inside of car windows) do, but the ink is impermanent.

There are several ways to make an Inkjet printed object last longer.

The easiest is to spray it with several coats of clear fixative which is basically a flexible clear varnish.

The second is to cover it with a clear adhesive film - the stuff for covering books is ideal.

The third is to print it "Flipped" (reversed) on Inkjet Film so that the image is on the inside - as you do for iron-on transfers (I suppose transfers are a fourth way.)

Unfortunately Inkjet Ink bleaches out when exposed to too much direct sunlight - over here in the UK, that doesn't happen so much !

RE the label subject, I suggest buying patches from Dick and using contact cement or hot glue. It's best to get that inventory consumed than creating new items with the logo - not very visible on a car bumper, but you could always tape a patch on the inside of the rear window.
