Subject: Redundant From: John MacKenzie Date: 22 Feb 02 - 05:55 PM Well guys, nothing to do with folk music, only a moan from a sad old folkie. To-day I got made redundant, not a total surprise, but unpleasant none the less. I've been offered another job, but it means a wage drop of £6000 p.a. Still at my age you've got to take what's on offer, and it's better than being unemployed. Sorry about the non musical content. Failte.....Giok |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: Rick Fielding Date: 22 Feb 02 - 06:03 PM Really sorry to hear that Giok. Hang in there guy. Rick |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: Gareth Date: 22 Feb 02 - 06:19 PM Sorry to hear Jock - unfortunately myself has been there, received it, and got the T Shirt. Better take a Job - whatever it pays - it can't be worse than being on the stones. Youv'e a better chance to get back into well payed work if you are working than if your not. Meantime practise your CV writing skills, and keep those applications going out. If you want to PM me for detail and help - feel free ! Gareth |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: catspaw49 Date: 22 Feb 02 - 06:23 PM Bummer Jock.... Spaw |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: Bobert Date: 22 Feb 02 - 06:32 PM Sorry to hear about this rather large setback, Giok. Hang in there, stay positive, stay determined and a year from now you'll be in a better situation than the one you've just had snatched from you. One door closes but another opens. Your past employer's loss... |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: C-flat Date: 22 Feb 02 - 06:35 PM I know the feeling well! Sometimes things happen for a reason and while it's shitty now your probably about to turn a corner! GOOD LUCK |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: Sandy Paton Date: 22 Feb 02 - 09:09 PM My wife's dear father, who passed away at 96 a few days ago, was one of the sweetest men I've ever known. When many people were being let go this fall, due to this Bushleague recession, he observed: "You're lucky you have your own business -- no one can lay you off!" Have faith, Giok, and you'll soon be up there again. Sandy |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: Ian Darby Date: 22 Feb 02 - 09:45 PM Good always comes out of bad, whatever you do don't go self-employed. (I've got my own business and you've never got your hand out of your pocket.) Try and get a regular income, no matter how small, then do something else on the side that you enjoy. One door closes, another opens and slams shut in your face. Kick it open again and keep goin' with your head down... Good luck. |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: Teribus Date: 23 Feb 02 - 07:06 AM Sorry to hear your news, from the advice given above and from your own posting, take the job and keep your ears open, you stand a far better chance of hearing about work if you're still in the loop than out of it - I know my involuntary 'holiday' lasted nearly 15 months. Good luck and best wishes. Bill. PS: Just a thought - Don't know what line your in - PM and you never know I may hear of something that could help. |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: gnu Date: 23 Feb 02 - 07:54 AM I've got a couple of those t-shirts. Definitely take the job. Chin up. |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: gnomad Date: 23 Feb 02 - 08:14 AM Been there too. I was surprised to find how much I had hated what I was doing, and what a relief it was when I stopped. I took a lower-pay position, elsewhere, and find I am much happier. I hope you will have as positive an outcome. |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: Trevor Date: 23 Feb 02 - 08:38 AM Hard luck Giok. Like the others, been there myself. I work for one of those outfits that tries to help people to get jobs. P-mail me if there's anything I can do. Cheers. |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: Hollowfox Date: 23 Feb 02 - 09:42 AM My good thoughts go out to you, and I'm glad you're not out of a job entirely.I think the line was in "Hello Dolly": "There's not much difference between having a little money and a lot of money, but there's a big world of difference between having a little money and no money at all". Best of luck, Mary |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: Susan of DT Date: 23 Feb 02 - 03:31 PM (dick greenhaus here) Sandy- What you say about running your own business is clearly true. But what about the idiot you have to work for? |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: kendall Date: 23 Feb 02 - 03:40 PM Dont you dare call Caroline an idiot!!LOL That's a hell of a word; Redundant. Cant they just dump you without insulting you too? |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: Bat Goddess Date: 23 Feb 02 - 04:03 PM It'll all work out -- take the other job and consider it temporary. It's easier to find work when you already have something. When I got laid off a year ago in Sept., it was one of the owners of the small business I worked for who took my job. But they gave me (out of guilt or because he didn't want to have to do it) a couple clients so I was pretty much forced into freelance. I also, thanks to some former co-workers, immediately found a part-time gig that paid $5 more an hour than the full time job (though, of course, without health insurance or anything like that). It's been an interesting year. I hope you can find an interesting, satisfying, well-paying and more or less SECURE job in the near future. Best of luck to you! Linn |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: Sandy Paton Date: 23 Feb 02 - 04:05 PM Thanks for defending my boss, Kendall! She may be a tyrant, but she's no idiot (as Susan really knows). Sandy (happily enslaved) |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: Maryrrf Date: 23 Feb 02 - 09:49 PM Giok, I hope the new position, even if it pays less, will be a good move for you. And I agree with Kendall, why do they have to invent terms like being made "redundant". Is that supposed to somehow make being laid off more acceptable??? It's like adding insult to injury. |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: John MacKenzie Date: 24 Feb 02 - 04:07 AM Well thank you all very much for the friendly, and sympathetic messages. Yes I've decided to take the job offered, in spite of the decrease in salary. I've known the guy who's offered me the work for a few years, and also know that if he had to, he'd give me the push without a second thought. So even before starting, I regard it as temporary work, but what the hell, I hit the big 60 this year and can't afford misplaced dignity. It's now 09:00 hrs in snowy Scotland, and I'm not even bathed or clothed yet, so better go frighten the drains. Thanks again for the support guys, it's one of the great things about being a Mudcatter. Slainthe.......Giok |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: Jock Morris Date: 24 Feb 02 - 06:02 AM You have my sympathy and empathy in this Giok, as I too have just been made redundant. The software industry in Scotland is in a very depressed state at the moment, so I could be looking at a few months of unemployment before I find another position. On a lighter note Giok, are you going to be at the Rosehall Ceilidh Weekend on the 15th to 17th of March? Scott |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: kendall Date: 24 Feb 02 - 07:27 AM Sandy, you could do worse. I did! |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: Celtic Soul Date: 24 Feb 02 - 08:51 AM Dunno how 6000 pounds translates to US dollars. In my case, I dropped about 6 thou in the latter. Mine, however, was voluntary. I can tell you it's survivable, however. It takes some adjustment to be sure. Good luck to you, and I sincerely hope that you enjoy your next job so much more than the last that the income drop will not be as noticable. |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: Morticia Date: 24 Feb 02 - 09:07 AM {{{{hugs}}}} hope things work out for you,Jock. |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: John MacKenzie Date: 24 Feb 02 - 09:19 AM Celtic Soul, it translates to 8,400 USD at todays exchange rate, and as you say it should be survivable. Mortie, thanks for the hugs, I'll collect them in person next time we meet, Gomez permitting of course!!. Jock, yes I shall be at the Rosehall ceilidh,I only live 5 miles away, which reminds me I must phone Dave Goulder. Once again thanks a zillion for the kind words. "With friends and neighbours; oh the world is a happier place." .....Failte.....Giok |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: kendall Date: 24 Feb 02 - 02:34 PM Tell Dave hello from me.He was in the audience when Gordon Bok and I screwed up his song, "OVER The Ground" |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: dick greenhaus Date: 24 Feb 02 - 05:48 PM Sandy (and Kendall et al) I was NOT referring to any particular situation, much less Folk-Legacy--I'm self-employed, and my boss is an idiot. I don't have to tell Sandy that he's very lucky. |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: kendall Date: 25 Feb 02 - 04:55 AM Dick...A little humor! |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: GUEST,KB@work Date: 25 Feb 02 - 05:18 AM Best of luck in the new job Giok. Kris |
Subject: RE: Redundant From: Mr Red Date: 25 Feb 02 - 04:40 PM Been "not there" several times. If it helps I am fatalistic now. The last time I got dumped it was not done with any grace but the unexplained headaches virtually went over night! Only the alcohol induce ones left - but that another thread. |
