Subject: Chuck Jones - RIP
From: Fiolar

The greatest animator of the 20th century (in my humble opinion) and twice Academy Award winner Chuck Jones has passed away at the age of 89. He helped to create the timeless characters of Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Tweetie Pie, Sylvester, Speedy Gonazalez, Road Runner, Elmer Fudd, Wile E Coyote and those are the well known ones. More than any other person, he brought fun and laughter to generations of children and adults alike. I still watch the adventures of all the above characters and never grow tired of them. (Musn't forget Yosemite Sam and Pepe Le Pew). He was made an Honorary Life Member by the Directors' Guild of America in recognition of his services. Suffering sucotosh, it's a sad day but "that thats all folks."

But thanks to his craft....that's NOT all folks.....More generations to come can enjoy him too.

Absolutely missed. I would have no problems watching Saturday cartoons even now, if it was Bugs and family. And Chuck Jones was a major part of that. I am so sorry to hear.

He's still one of my heroes. And don't forget, he made music an integral part of his cartoons whenever he could, from opera to folk. Let's be honest, most of us learned "Hello Ma Baby" from "One Froggy Evening". He was wise enough to make cartoons that amused him and the other workers at the Termite Terrace, rather than talking down to any kids that might see it. If you haven't already, go find his two autobiographies, Chuck Amuck and Chuck Redeux. The origin of the (Oscar winning) bullfight cartoon is worth the trip.

How many learned the Valkyrie song from Bugs in drag? Oh geez, what an incredible talent. How wonderful that he did have a good and long life, though. Thanks Mr. Jones and boy! will you always be with us! RIP

"Oh Bwunhilde, you'we so wovewy!"

Boohoo, that IS bad news; sorry to hear it. I still get very regular laughs by just thinking about those cartoons, and so much of the vocabulary has become part of our regular speech: "Oh, my little pigeon, I love it when you play hard to get!" "There's somethin', I say there's somethin' kinda eeeewwww about a boy who's never played baseball" "Yeah, he's cute---cute like a stomach pump!" and on & on & on.....

If only for "What's Opera Doc?" and "The Bunny Of Seville" I will never forget Chuck Jones. No matter how depressed or low I've felt ( including when I was a vile teenager ) his cartoons always made it better.

...one of my favorite quotes from Chuck Amuck: "...it was entirely impossible for me to read a book without thinking, and reading the Bobbsey Twins, for instance, made me think about throwing up."
Only 89 (sigh). Well, that's one more proof that the good die young.

Wile E. Coyote, Pepe, Chuck. Heroes all. When I met him I was pleased to find him as funny, kind, and warm as I had imagined. If you could invent a grandfather, you would probably dream up someone like Chuck.

A writer, artist and director whose like will not be seen again.

Remember the motto of the Acme Company. "We make great Acmes."

Thanks, Chuck. Say hi to Mel, Friz, Carl, and Maurice.

Well, I don't find it sad at all. Chuck was 89, and he left a heck of a body of work behind him, and laughs to last several lifetimes.

AAAwwww.... The PBS series "Great Performances" did a wonderful tribute to him back in November of 2000. The website companion to the show can be found here. ...

I'm off to explore the site in memoriam...

(BTW, I'm imagining Chuck with little flapping angel wings, right now, with a harp in his hands, just like he used to draw ;-))

Time to sit back and watch some great shorts.

The best way to reminiss(?) about one of the greatest animators and directors of our time.

Any peer2peer program can find full episodes of looney tunes available. I own two laserdiscs of collections, between them all I probably have 30 episodes.

My personal Chuck favorite, probably would have to be Robin Hood Daffy.

So anyways, time to go watch:ZOINKS! AND AWAY!!!! *BAM*

Zoinks! And Away!..... *BAM*

There's a bunch of sound clips of Bugs on this page, including my favourite of the opera duet between him and Elmer, the whole 7:06 minutes of it!

And, if you back out of that page to this one and choose Multimedia, then animation, there are a bunch of other sites which have some, too.

What a great way to spend one's life and use one's talent. We'll miss you, Mr. Jones, and many thanks.

He was a great, he is now a late great. He is still, and always will be, a Great. Given the time in which he was invented, I can forgive him Pepe le Pew... but I do wish the reruns could be avoided. More Bugs instead! More little kittens and big bulldogs' skin! *sigh* (Even if, once again, I was more surprised to hear he'd been still alive the day before yesterday than I was to hear he'd died yesterday...)

We saw the PBS program last year; it was just around Thanksgiving, as I recall. We stumbled upon it, loved it, and in referring to it over the next few days found that practically everyone we knew had seen it as well...thus ensued several days of unbridled Chuck Jones allusions; the man was a genius, what fun he left behind!

I got to interview him about ten years ago when he opened a gallery in Santa Fe, N.M. We talked for about two hours. He was absolutely delightful. Said I was the second best interviewer he'd ever had -- and he married the first one. He drew me a little sketch of Pepe le Pew on a piece of notebook paper that said, "J'taime, K.C. Amor, Pepe" which I still have in my "to be framed" folder in my file drawer. he was just as great and funny and ordinary and kind and outrageous as you'd imagine. Truly, truly an original human being. And a joyous one, which is even rarer.

Pepe was a date rapist, but Chuck Jones was a genius. Whyowoman, you have a great treasure.

Read a superb obit in The Washington Post, describing him as "at the Acme of his career" which I thought was pretty funny... and it mentioned a meeting between Chuck Jones and Herblock, which must have been a total HOOT! Read if you can...

Back in the very late seventies, when the late Peter Gzowski had his brief and much-maligned late night TV show, he had Chuck Jones on as a guest several times. At least once Chuck made his stage entrance swinging in Tarzan-style on a rope with a huge ALLEY-OOOOP battle cry.

Guess he was only about seventy then...what a hilarious character.

Mrrzy --

Correction: Pepe was a sexual harrasser -- still, not the kind of man [skunk] you'd actually want to meet, but since he never actually succeeded in completing the sex act, I'm not sure it's accurate to call him a "rapist".

(And, as I recall, he always got his cummupence in the end)

He was a genius, all right. I don't think he had a piece of work I didn't love.

His 'operas' and one-off pieces--Michigan J. Frog, Sam the Sheepdog--tickled me more, maybe, than some of the others.

Does anyone remember the one about little daydreaming boy? (The bit ended with him becoming, in his own mind, MacArthur--'I shall return!') I could really relate to that little guy!

Well, Jenny T, I believe the short you refer to is called From A to Z-Z-Z-Z-Z

Its the first of two starring the character of Ralph Phillips. The second was called Boyhood Daze

Hope it helps.

Just an idea to see how important, and range that Chuck Jones had, go to the Internet Movie Database and see the information on Chuck Jones

290 Directorial credits alone. That doesn't include the writer, producer and various other credits.

By golly, those were the ones, Devilmaster!

I'd run them together in my head, I guess.

The scene, whichever short it appeared in, in which he's sent to the blackboard to solve a math problem--the numbers come to life and stage a revolution, and Ralphie valiantly battles them ... Surreal! Priceless!

The likes of that kind of genius come along only rarely.

Obviously greatly missed by all.

Many "filkers" will feel the loss of his inspiration. (search "filk" for details.) For those who remember the "Bubble Car song" 1960s, but I don't know who wrote or performed ...

Beep! Beep! (a song from the viewpoint of a character who never gets the whole picture)

While running down a country road, so much to my surprise,

I Saw a heap of birdseed, of quite a gen'rous size.

I thought I'd stop and eat my fill, 'cos eating is my thing.

A giant rock fell past my head, and landed on a spring.

"Beep Beep, Beep Beep", I just went "Beep Beep Beep"

The next day on the roadway then I spied a railroad track.

It issued from a tunnel I remembered as a crack.

While waiting for the crossing bells, I just admired the view,

Then came a mighty gust of wind, a train came roaring through.

"Beep, Beep. etc.,"

One day upon a mountain pass, a rocket followed me.

I thought I'd best protect my ass, and ran away with glee.

The rocket followed on so fast, I didn't dare to stop.

I dodged it round a sudden bend, avoiding quite a drop.

"Bep beep etc.,..."

Tom Smith (U.S.) does a great song from the viewpoint of Wylie Coyote. If you can find/hear it then enjoy.

Anyone wants to use the above then fine, I'm not worried about copyright, but Warner Bros. may be...
