Subject: Lyr Add: NIGHT FERRY (Fureys and Davey Arthur)
From:
Date: 21 Mar 98 - 02:04 PM

Thanks for the help with Leaving Nancy, folks. I can hardly wait to print and try it. However, I did have a bit of trouble with another song, and this time I have done a search of the forum...no matches for [night ferry]. So here goes... could somebody please check this?

The Night Ferry (as sung by The Fureys and Davey Arthur)

I came home across the sea to my homeland once again
And it was nice to see the town that I was born in
And the air it smelled so fresh and the wind held back my tears
As I slowly walked down the gangway

And the night ferry has taken me home again
Yes, the night ferry, she's taken me home again

As I walked through the city again, trying to remember everything
The people were there laughing with their friends
And the lights they were shining, they were shining down on me
They were making my heart feel free home again

And I walked through the park where my father once held me
Where I learned to love and hate with all my friends
Where I kissed my first girl, and my friends they laughed at me
And the gate there where we met constantly

Oh, the night ferry has taken me home again
Yes, the night ferry, she's taken me home again

I left home when I was sixteen, my people they didn't agree
SOMEBODY PLEASE CHECK NEXT LINE FOR ME
But it didn't bother me, over then
And I sailed across the sea, to seek a new country
To seek opportunity to better myself

I came home across the sea to my homeland once again
And it was nice to see the land that I was born in
And the air it smelled so fresh and the wind held back my tears
As I slowly walked down the gangway

Oh, the night ferry has taken me home again
Yes, the night ferry, she's taken me home again
Yes, the night ferry, she's taken me home again

In the Furey's song book it just says:
But it didn't bother me

And I sailed across the sea ......etc.
If you need ABC and or chords leave a note.

Iv'e just listened to the CD and there is a phrase after that line that sounds just as you say, but it's hard to hear.

I've figured out some chords and a brand new (to me) picking pattern that I like fine, but hey, yes, I'm very interested to know the the "ABC" chords.

I *must* do a search do find out exactly what ABC chords are...

And I have to admit, the crazy thing I thought the Furey's might be singing was: But it didn't bother me, oh, but her hair... (which just seems so nicely sentimetal that I *think* it, even if I don't sing it).

Thanks, BAZ!

I typed this in from the Furey's songbook. It sounds a bit strange played on a piano sound but try it out with ABCMusic if you have a copy and switch the instruments to Accordian and it works quite well.

I'm going to name drop here which is not normally my style but last summer Finbar Furey came to our village to see a friend, heard us playing and invited us to bring our instruments along to the local golf club and jam with him. I tell you he is an extremely talented and one of the nicest guys I have ever met. I was learning to play the low D whistle at the time and just about to throw it away in frustration, after 10 mins tuition I felt like I'd been playing it all my life. Finbar had just had a low A whistle made and even he was struggling, It was just like trying to play the tubes on a vacuum cleaner!

now here's the wanted line from Jake Walton, "Keltische Folksongs", (this book doesn't seem to have an English language original, though all the lyrics are in English):

"but it didn't bother me, oh it hurt them"

I think it should be added that the original version of this song was written by Wizz Jones for his wife Sandy and has quite different lyrics. Finbar Furey has taken Jones' song (with credit, to the best of my knowledge) and has adapted the lyrics to such an extent that you may say it's a new song sharing only tune, structure and chorus.

I'll post the origibal lyrics later

Wolfgang

here's Wizz Jones' original version:

Night Ferry
(Wizz Jones)

I came home across the channel
To England once again
And I tried to get my mind
A-thinking clear
And I stood and watched
The shore-lights
Disappearing in the night
And then I went below
To get myself a beer.

O the night ferry
Is bringing me home again
Yes the night ferry
Is bringing me home again.

Laughing truck drivers
Sitting down to a midnight meal
And students on the road
Talking to me

But I was just dreaming
That she was by my side
And together we were coming home
Like it used to be.

But in the cold grey light of morning
I know she won't be there
And on my radio I know
It's just bad news.

O the night ferry
Is bringing me home again
Yes the night ferry
Is bringing me home again.

Thanks for all the help. Amazing how helpful the group is. :-) Now I'm going to do a search for ABC music...

Also thanks for the name dropping. I hadn't realized that Furey was a surname. Kinda neat to think of a family called the Fureys.

There was a discussion on this song a few weeks back and I seem to think that the missing words were found. But if I remember rightly The song was attributed to Whizz Jones and adapted by the Fureys.
