Subject: RE: bowed psaltry From: Mike Byers Date: 26 Feb 02 - 09:15 AM Thanks! I'm not a luthier by any means, but I make cabinets, doors, furniture, etc. and am set for tools. It looked to me like the Musicmakers kit might be a good deal, and I think I'll give one a try if only to save the time I'd otherwise spend hunting for materials other than structural wood. I'll let you know how it works against the 'coons. |
Subject: RE: bowed psaltry From: catspaw49 Date: 26 Feb 02 - 08:37 AM Hi Mike........The Musicmaker Kits are pretty decent, actually quite good. If you're not long on tools or woodworking ability they really do produce good instruments pretty easily and inexpensively. I've seen a lot of them here and there as you probably have and with a little time and patience, you can do it yourself and have a good time and a good instrument. Here is a very basic plan that you can modify as you like if you have a little more experience and tools. I've built several scaled up a bit and modified some from this plan. Good luck with the 'coons!!! Spaw |

Subject: bowed psaltery From: Mike Byers Date: 26 Feb 02 - 08:16 AM I heard a bowed psaltery last weekend at the Dayton Dulcimer Society's "Dulcimer Doin's" and rather than being the vermin-repelling, dog-torturing instrument I had heard before, what I heard last weekend was quite beautiful. Has anyone built the Musicmaker's Kits version? Or are there other recommended sources for bowed psalterys and construction plans? At the least, I imagine learning to play one of these would help keep our racoon hordes at bay. |
