mike donnelly,i lived just around the corner from the welcome and remember they had an all day party when they got the news that it was'nt going to be demolished, i used to drink in the grey horse over the rd and that was pulled down! played football for the welcome in the 80s, great pub. when roy and brenda left about six years ago i dj'd at the party and there were lots of old faces there, it went on till seven o'clock in the morning! sadly the pub went downhill after this,mainly because of citys ground closing down and everyone moving away, great pub,lovely people and sadly missed.

7 years late but, yes she still plays it, amd I'm married to her!

Google just spat out another name I should remember, but dont, but then again surnames didnt seem so important then. Someone cale John Booth has a website http://members.netscapeonline.co.uk/johnboothagain/Performer.html where he says he was inspired and encouraged by the singarounds we had at the Welcome. Does anyone remember him?

I think it was home I upset once, though he was so placid it's difficult to imagine, but back at his place for offee, I found a chequebook and for a joke wrote myslef a chacque for 100,000 smackeroonies, he didnt think it was funny at first, mind you that might have been someone else for all I know! Dick, used to run the session, did a memorable version of Tom's Gone to Hiloh (I never knew he made guitars)

I always felt the place was never 'run' by anyone, but I suppose he was looked upon as a leader. Yes, he made guitars on his bedsit just up from me, in Clyde Rd. I bought his frst and gave it to my sister, who's taken it with her around the world. I played it in California once, and now its settled in the corner of her house in Hale, Cheshire (as the Locals insist on calling it!) Dick Hebden made more, and as i recall, was rather good. Last I heard, he was a Town planner for Liverpool City Council, but that was over 10 yrs ago. Being from Bristol way he was a natural with sea shanties. He often gave me a lift on tha back of his bike to the Welcome, or to domsci for the Full monty 'after 6.30 evening meal', double everything, fill the plate till there was no more, and half price.

From Nottingham, lived upstairs and yes he could sing, but made better ale, 'mulling it' with nutmeg and a hot poker whilst listening to his Radio, and sucking his pipe, till one day he got married and went away ....... Is it yourself?

Taff, with Rawtenstall Annual Fair and enough slack in his pants? ..but more pints in his hand than songs in his head I think.

Rowdy sang at the Song Carriers, which it was 'very' traditionalist, and occaisonally came to the Welcome. Tony Sullivan played a mean banjo, with others in a band calling themselves Mise Ceol I think, were also occasional visitors.

And there was Dido, Bendigo, Gentry he was there oh! Traveller, who never looked behind him. There was Countess, Rover, Bonny Lass and Jovial, these were the hounds that would find him....

Sure sign of creeping old age to reminisce like this, but it does feel good. I had a session about another later period in London, when I went to New York last October, to provide a listening ear for an old friend who witnessed the WTC attacks. He said, our two days of reminiscing, made him feel great, and made the visit so much easier for me.

I think you are A.J. FISH, but, I'm not that certain. Or am I afraid to admit I might be embarrased that I cant think of someone whom I should remember? Ah well, I'll have to blame the beer's effect on the brain cells!

My only connection with Manchester in the 60's was the MSG and also a club in Salford (was it in the Transport Workers club) which I think was run by the same guy who ran the MSG - I did a gig there - probably under the stage name which I used then (I don't know why) of Dave Snow.

This is a suitable forum, Taff. Nice to see you again (as it were). Like you, I've forgotten more names than I can remember, and for a while I'll leave you guessing as to my identity. I'd forgotten that you were spokesman for the "Save the Welcome Inn" campaign, though remember the campaign well enough.

Hiya, Taff. I was around the Manchester scene in the '60's and early '70's, though I didn't go to the Welcome Inn. MSG was my favourite place, and I ran clubs in Altrincham and Hale.

I'm answering because of your mention of Bryn. If it is Bryn Pugh, and you manage to make contact, I would love to get in touch again, as we are cousins, and lost touch years ago.

I came across some references to the Welcome Inn, in Rusholme, Manchester. In a thread dating back 18 months or more, so thaought I'd start a new, more specific thread on the subject. The Welcome's back room, used to host a magic little Tuesday night singaround, and I'm trying to trace some of those who went in there in the mid-late 70's. I was a student in Manchester from 1973/4 till around 1977/8 . I lived in Rusholme & W. Didsbury and I started out doing some unaccompanied singing at the Welcome Inn in Rusholme. Over those years it became a regular haunt, and only the other day, when sorting through some old tapes came across a recording of a news interview, in which I was 'spokesman' for the commitee which forced the city council to re-consider its demolishion order, folloeing a campaign by some locals and the singaround regulars when the place was going through 'social cleansing' or a 'programme of housing renewal'. I also remember the poet, Paul Conner, and was delighted to hear he was still around at the time of the previous thread's begining. I think I remember a Bryn, which the thread also mentioned as an occasional at the Welcome's Tuesday sessions. I also knew a fair few in the Manchester scene, including, the original song carriers club. But its, like 25 years, and I now I can't remember the names without prompting. I havent seen, nor been in touch with anyone since I left Manchester until recently that is, when I googled around with the few names and places I remembered. I'v since found this forum which is shows promise of relevance. I have managed to get in touch with someone else from my Manchester of the 70's , a Song Carrier & Welcome Inn regular, 'Rowdy' Yates. he ran the Lifeline drop in centre in town. Anyone else remember anyone else? If this forum is not suitable, then I apologise in advance. If I get lots of answers, interest, then I'll be happy to take it all elsewhere, maybe start a Yahoo Group or whatever. All ideas Welcome ... so to speak!
