I also had a variation of this sang to me as a child.
Though the variation I remember had the song singing to "Mr. Moon Man" not mister moon.

Mr. Moon Man, Moon Man, pretty silver Moon man,
Please shine down on me.
Oh, Mr. Moon Man, Moon Man shine your light on me.

There was a bit in the middle that I can't exactly recall, but isn't one of the variations here and then ended with:

Mr Moon Man, Moon Man pretty silver Moon Man,
Please shine down on,
Won't you shine on,
Shine your silvery light on.... me....

Between 1940 and 1945 in Oakland, CA, mother sang the following song to my little sister and me at bedtime. It was scary and mysterious. Her other songs were more soothing.

When I was a student at Stratford College in Danville, VA 1950-52 we had sing-a-longs in the halls at night with a girl named Myrt Halley playing Mr. Moon on her guitar. This what we sang:

I've been wondering about it for years. My grandmother (who's 95 now) used to sing it to all the grandkids. We are strongly in the possum camp, except in our version it's a tiger. That's why I was curious about the song - seems like no one else uses a tiger.

My sister who was 13 years older than me and was the oldest in the family, used to sing this to me to put me to sleep also. She passed away a few years ago and we would talk about this song and she couldn't remember the lyrics. I always remembered her singing Mr. Moon Moon, Silvery, Silvery moon, which I guess is a little off, but I always knew that something was hiding behind a tree, and she always said that it seemed like she wouldn't sing something like that to me if I was little, but I knew she had. I wish so much I'd thought to research this a few years back and print these lyrics and go the hospital and sing them with her. She had a beautiful, Doris Day type voice. Thanks for sharing all these stories.

I was delighted to see that so many had grandparents who sang this song to them. I did a search and wanted to find out more about the history. Seems everyone has their own words. Mine is almost the same I'll give you what I learned:

My father used to sing 'Goodnight Mr Moon'as referred to by Jezmondo on June 16th 09 -01.20pm. He said it was sung to Him as a child before WW1. I would love to find more lyrics especially verses. I have found a clip on You Tube of a two year old using the tune my father sang to me and I now sing to my grandson. Does anyone know how to get hold of the complete version with the tune?

I am also looking for information on another pre- WW1 song called 'Hush here comes the Dream man' (or possibly Sandman)translated by the troops on the front into 'Hush here comes a Whizzbang'.

This is the kind of confusion that inevitably happens when people try to discuss more than one song in one thread, and they use expressions like "this song" without clearly explaining which song they are referring to.

I also now see that you tried to address your question to one specific person who perhaps would have known which song you meant. Maybe you assumed everyone else would ignore you. As you can see, that's not what happens, and it's usually a good thing. Your answer might come from an unexpected quarter.

thank you for the response, as i have been searching for a long time for any information about this song. my name is Jojo, and i would really like to know more about the other words for verses / bridge section... can Jezmondo please post the other lyrics (as per 16 june 2009) - that would be really appreciated. you have also acknowledged that this was an actual song. it was handed down from my grant mother (born in 1914) and my mother and i still sing it regularly.

Any information about this song would be really appreciated, as we know nothing more about this song other than the lyrics and that it was probably written in the 1930's.

i have not checked the site for some time, as i had given up hope of anyone else knowing anything about this song.

This is how my mom sung this song to my sister and I in the late 70's, early 80's. She learned it in her music class in school as a girl in northern New Jersey.

One interesting note is that she always sung this song to us as a coda to the song that begins... "Some folks say that a tramp won't steal... way down, way down, way down yonder in the cornfield." When that song ended, she always went right into Mr. Moon. When we asked her if this was part of the same song, she could only reply that she learned them together.
