I also had a variation of this sang to me as a child.
Though the variation I remember had the song singing to "Mr. Moon Man" not mister moon.

Mr. Moon Man, Moon Man, pretty silver Moon man,
Please shine down on me.
Oh, Mr. Moon Man, Moon Man shine your light on me.

There was a bit in the middle that I can't exactly recall, but isn't one of the variations here and then ended with:

Mr Moon Man, Moon Man pretty silver Moon Man,
Please shine down on,
Won't you shine on,
Shine your silvery light on.... me....

Lyrics song to kid born in 1952 by her parents who were born and raised in Butte, Montana:

Oh, Mister Moon, Moon, silver shining moon
Please shine down on me,
Oh, Mister Moon, Moon silver shining moon
Shining behind that tree,
Somebody's coming, I'se a gonna run,
Somebody's coming with a big shot gun,
Oh, Mister Moon, Moon, silver shining moon,
Please shine down on, talk about your shining
Won't you please shine down on me.

Consider me in the "big shot gun" camp. Also the camps of "knees are shaking," and "bright and shiny."

Between 1940 and 1945 in Oakland, CA, mother sang the following song to my little sister and me at bedtime. It was scary and mysterious. Her other songs were more soothing.

Moon, moon, great big silvery moon,
Won't you please shine down on me.
Moon, moon, great big silvery moon,
Won't you come from behind that tree.

Right over there stands a man with a gun,
Waiting for to shoot you if you dare to run,
So, moon, moon, great big silvery moon
Won't you please shine down on,
Talk about your shining,
Won't you please shine down on me.

My aunt sang it to us as:

Mr moon, moon, bright and shiny moon
Hiding behind that tree
Mr moon, moon bright and shiny moon
Please shine down on me

Oh how I'd love to watch you but I got to run
Cause there's a man behind me with a big shotgun

My aunt sang it to us as:
Mr moon, moon, bright and shiny moon
Hiding behind that tree
Mr moon, moon bright and shiny moon
Please shine down on me

When I was a kid, my mother used to sing it with these lyrics. She was born in 1926. I don't recall any other verses.

Oh, Mister Moon, Moon, Great big silver moon
Quit yer hiding behind that tree
Somebody's waiting with a Gatling gun
Somebody's waiting just to have a little fun.
Oh, Mister Moon, Moon, great big silver spoon
Won't you please shine down on me?

When I was a student at Stratford College in Danville, VA 1950-52 we had sing-a-longs in the halls at night with a girl named Myrt Halley playing Mr. Moon on her guitar. This what we sang:

Oh, Mr. Moon, Moon, bright and silv'ry moon
Won't you please shine down on me
Oh Mr Moon, Moon, bright and silv'ry moon
Won't you come from behind that tree
When your life's in danger and you're scared to run
There's a man behind you with a big shotgun
Oh, Mr. Moon, Moon, bright and silv'ry moon
Won't you please shine down on
Talk about you shine on
Please shine down on me-e-e.

Some folks say that a tramp won't steal, way down, way down, way down yonder in the cornfield.

If that ain't stealin' then I don't know, way down, way down, way down yonder in the cornfield.

One had a shovel and the other had a hoe, way down, way down, way down yonder in the cornfield.

If that ain't stealin' then I don't know, way down, way down, way down yonder in the cornfield.

Mr Moon is a separate song...I know that one too! Ah, the stuff we kids had to sing in school in the 50's..........

Thanks, Bob, for finding the origin of this!

I've been wondering about it for years. My grandmother (who's 95 now) used to sing it to all the grandkids. We are strongly in the possum camp, except in our version it's a tiger. That's why I was curious about the song - seems like no one else uses a tiger.

My sister who was 13 years older than me and was the oldest in the family, used to sing this to me to put me to sleep also. She passed away a few years ago and we would talk about this song and she couldn't remember the lyrics. I always remembered her singing Mr. Moon Moon, Silvery, Silvery moon, which I guess is a little off, but I always knew that something was hiding behind a tree, and she always said that it seemed like she wouldn't sing something like that to me if I was little, but I knew she had. I wish so much I'd thought to research this a few years back and print these lyrics and go the hospital and sing them with her. She had a beautiful, Doris Day type voice. Thanks for sharing all these stories.

Oh Mister Moon, Moon great big silvery moon
Won't you please come from behind that tree?
For I know a man with a big shotgun,
and he's go'na come 'n getchya if you dare to run.
So Moon, Moon, great big silvery moon
won't you please shine down on

Hi, regarding the lyrics for "Hush here comes the dream man", here is a site I found quite a few years ago which has a whole discussion and various peoples memories of the lyrics. My mother was born in 1919 and died in 2003. She used to sing it to me when I was little and her mother sang it to her and I sang it to my girls. Hope you enjoy it. http://www.mamalisa.com/blog/do-you-know-the-lyrics-to-the-sandmans-coming-in-his-train-of-cars/

Mr. Moon, Moon, pretty silver moon;
won't you please shine down on me?
Oh! Mr. Moon, Moon, pretty silver moon;
come out from behind that tree.
You're in danger you'd better run;
Here comes Johnny with his big-bad gun.

Tell me why the stars do shine
Tell me why the ivy twine
Tell me why the sky's so blue and I will tell you why I love you
Because God made the stars to shine
Because God made the ivy twine
Because God made the sky so blue and that's the reason why I love you..

Oh Mr. Moon, Moon, bright and silvery moon
Hiding behind that tree
Oh Mr. Moon, Moon, bright and silvery moon
Won't you please shine down on me?
I'm gonna shoot that possum with my big shotgun
Shoot that possum 'fore he starts to run
Oh Mr. Moon, Moon, bright and silvery moon

My father used to sing 'Goodnight Mr Moon'as referred to by Jezmondo on June 16th 09 -01.20pm. He said it was sung to Him as a child before WW1. I would love to find more lyrics especially verses. I have found a clip on You Tube of a two year old using the tune my father sang to me and I now sing to my grandson. Does anyone know how to get hold of the complete version with the tune?

I am also looking for information on another pre- WW1 song called 'Hush here comes the Dream man' (or possibly Sandman)translated by the troops on the front into 'Hush here comes a Whizzbang'.

Jojo: Please disregard my last remark. I now understand that you were probably referring to a different song that is probably unrelated to MISTER MOON: KINDLY COME OUT AND SHINE, which Bob Coltman posted.

This is the kind of confusion that inevitably happens when people try to discuss more than one song in one thread, and they use expressions like "this song" without clearly explaining which song they are referring to.

I also now see that you tried to address your question to one specific person who perhaps would have known which song you meant. Maybe you assumed everyone else would ignore you. As you can see, that's not what happens, and it's usually a good thing. Your answer might come from an unexpected quarter.

As a general rule, if you want to discuss a different song than the one the thread is mainly about, it's best to start a new thread. It helps avoid confusion.

Jojo: Look at Bob Coltman's message above, posted 28 Sep 07 - 07:29 AM.

It shows that we have a copy of the sheet music dated 1903—although the version that is popular now has evolved quite a bit since then.

hi...

thank you for the response, as i have been searching for a long time for any information about this song. my name is Jojo, and i would really like to know more about the other words for verses / bridge section... can Jezmondo please post the other lyrics (as per 16 june 2009) - that would be really appreciated. you have also acknowledged that this was an actual song. it was handed down from my grant mother (born in 1914) and my mother and i still sing it regularly.

Any information about this song would be really appreciated, as we know nothing more about this song other than the lyrics and that it was probably written in the 1930's.

i have not checked the site for some time, as i had given up hope of anyone else knowing anything about this song.

Thank you.

This one has only been around some 50+ years...I like it!

MISTER MOON
As recorded by: Carl Smith

Can I depend on your light, purty moon
While I'm holdin' her tight, silver moon
Will you be there above,
Helpin' me win my love
Can I depend on your light, Mr. Moon.

Ev'ry time you're shinin',
There's romance in the air
Please set her heart to pinin',
And tell her I'll be there

As I look in her eyes, purty moon
Will you look from the sky, silver moon
If I ask her to be - mine, will you stand by me
Will you help me tonight, Mr. Moon.

If we're wed in the middle of June
Will you shine bright for our honeymoon
When you shine you make love,
Seem to come from above
Will I see you tonight, Mr. Moon.

It seems your golden beauty
Just makes a perfect night
Somehow it seems my cutie
Looks cuter by your light.

There'll be just us three, purty moon
You and her, her and me, silver moon
For helpin' our romance,
I thank you in advance
And I'll see you tonight, Mr. Moon.

G

WOW! For many years I heard this song from my Grandma late at night, but never really knew or remembered the lyrics. It is so funny what a few words will make a person recall. Would like to know the whole song. Thanks

Oh Mister Moon, Moon
Bright and shiny moon
hiding behind that tree
when your life's in danger, you had better run
there's a man behind you with a great big gun
OH mister Moon, moon bright and shiny moon
hiding behind that tree...
oh won't you please shine down on, talkin' about your shinin'
won't you please shine down on me

It could just go on and on...

That's the way my parents would sing it to us in the car while we were driving on a trip. I was very young, 3 or so when I first heard it. I am 52 now and still remember us all singing it for many many years

This is how my grandma used to sing it to me. She would be 98 years old if she were still alive.

Oh mister moon, moon, bright and silvery moon
won't you please shine down on me.
Oh mister moon, moon, bright and silvery moon,
come out behind that tree
My life's in danger, I've got to run
Here comes a man with a big Gatling gun
Oh mister moon, moon, bright and silvery moon
won't you please shine down on me

GUEST 17 Sept. 2007 8:28am gave me the lyrics to the song my mother sang to me in the late 30's, early 40's. I think there are other verses but this is the one I remember most clearly.
Thanks- I have been looking for a long time.

This is how my mom sung this song to my sister and I in the late 70's, early 80's. She learned it in her music class in school as a girl in northern New Jersey.

One interesting note is that she always sung this song to us as a coda to the song that begins... "Some folks say that a tramp won't steal... way down, way down, way down yonder in the cornfield." When that song ended, she always went right into Mr. Moon. When we asked her if this was part of the same song, she could only reply that she learned them together.

Oh Mr. Moon, Moon, bright and silvery moon
Won't you please shine down on me?
Oh Mr. Moon, Moon, bright and silvery moon
Hiding behind that tree
I'm gonna shoot that possum with my big shotgun
Shoot that possum 'fore he starts to run
Oh Mr. Moon, Moon, bright and silvery moon
Won't you please shine down on
Aren't you gonna shine on
Puh-lease shine down on meeee!

Subject: Lyr Add: GOOD-NIGHT MR. MOON (Dawson, Von Tilzer)
From: Jim Dixon

Probably not the song you're looking for, but another in the same genre, from the sheet music at Indiana University:

GOOD-NIGHT MR. MOON.
Words, Eli Dawson. Music, Albert Von Tilzer.
New York: The York Music Co., 1911.

1. Honey dear, this nook is lonely. I have a fear
Someone is near. Let's move from here.
I would feel funny if someone were to hear
Sweet nothings that you whisper in my ear.
The moon is shining. folks can't help but know.
Bid him "Good-night" and then, perhaps he'll go.

CHORUS: Good-night, good-night, Mister Moon.
Hide your face so we can spoon.
We just can't make love in front of you.
(And why not?)
Don't you see that we are bashful too?
(I cannot.)
Good-night, good-night, Mister Moon.
Close your bright eyes!
Won't you go to sleep?
And don't you dare to peep!
Good-night (Good-night, good-night!), Mister Moon.

2. Honey dear, the winds are blowing. I have a fear
Raindrops are near. It's lightning, dear.
I can hear thunder. We must run home quick, dear,
'Cause mother doesn't worry when you're near.
The moon's so angry! Tears he has to shed.
He knew just what we meant when we both said: CHORUS

[You can hear GOOD NIGHT MR. MOON, sung by Albert Campbell & Irving Gillette, from an Edison Amberol cylinder recorded in 1912, at The Internet Archive.]
