Subject: Origin of Marching Through Georgia tune? From: Jon W. Date: 27 Feb 02 - 08:07 PM I've been learning this tune recently on banjo, and want to know if it was a previously known tune that was adapted for "Marching Through Georgia" or was it composed specifically for that song? The reason I want to know, is that the tune was also used for a Mormon folksong "All are talking of Utah" which refers to incidents (or at least a general climate of negative publicity) that would have taken place around 1857--several years before Sherman's march to the sea. Of course the Mormon song could have been composed years after the fact. Anyone know? |
