wonderful, LJC!...I have heard Ewan MacColl sing that (on record) for 25+ years...the internet/WWW has given me more 'feeling' for the music in the last 5 years than I had in 20 before that.

The OED gives, as the earliest meaning of "snot", "The snuff of a candle; the burnt part of a candle wick. Now _north. dial._" That sense plausibly extends the previous line: my candle is burnt so far down that the last bit of wick is giving out. A double double-entendre is, of course, still perfectly possible.

Just happened to be sitting here in Kirkcaldy listening to Joe Aitken singing the song when I saw the post. Bothy Ballads may not be known to many catters who don't have connections to the North East of Scotland, but if anyone wanted to hear pure traditional song, there can be no better example. The language used is the Doric language , a dialect, still commonly used by Aberdonians today. The Barnyards of Delgaty is a good example, but there is no better way to hear the songs than by the worthies who regularly compete at festivals all over the North East. They are truly authentic and sing from the heart.

I've heard the sond sung by Old Blind Dog and Gaelic Storm. I love the tune and the lyrics but I can't translate the refrain. Can someone help?

The refrain is made up of nonsense words (apart from the repeat of the title, of course, though that doesn't appear, so far as I remember, in older versions): meaningless, so there's nothing to "translate".

This is also the first track on the excellent 'Resident's Lounge' CD from the Bothy Folk Club which was released not so long ago, with a superb rendition of 'Barnyards...' being sung by the inimitable Clive Pownceby.

It's quite a treasure trove actually including a wonderful original piece called 'On Morecambe Bay' by Kevin Littlewood.

You can buy it on line from Abicat I think for £5. Well worth a listen - and no I'm not a resident, and not on commission, it's just good :-)
