When I listened to "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" I began to hyperventilate--I am over it now, but am still lightheaded--the antiphonal choir is a particularly devastating effect--as are the saxes--definitely more fun than Charlotte Church!

I had never heard of the POrtsmouth Sinfonia before but NOW I will add my name to those wishing to get their albums released on CD. Desdemona, thank you, thank you, thank you... I discovered Eilart Pilaum III (to give him his full title) in Sweden some years back, and brought a cassette home with me, but lost it - and nobody ever believes me when I tell them about him.

It takes a very rare talent to sing and get the timing so wrong...

I know it; I didn't know "All Shook Up" could SOUND like that....and I'll bet neither did Elvis, no matter HOW many drugs he'd taken. On the other hand, maybe he got hold of a copy and THAT'S what killed him!

I especially like the tortured "uuuuuhhhhhhh" sounds so cunningly substituted for the "uh huh huh"s of the original!

Definitely one of those musical treats that must be experienced to be believed....imagine having the chance to see him in concert---sigh.

"My Bathroom" is a classic. And Yoko Ono isn't as bad as people decribe her, simply because there aren't words in the English language to decribe how bad she is.

I'm with Sophocleese as a new fan of the Portsmouth Sinfonia - yes, it's a difficult choice, but I agree - Also Sprach Zarathustra just has to be their very best offering, a talent of musical timing only just exceeded by the Swinging Swede. A word of caution to any Alan Rickman fans: *on no account* listen to his rendering "Intelligence" on this website. Come to think of it, remembering him singing "The sun ain't gonna shine any more" with Juliet Stevenson in "Truly, Madly, Deeply" should have been prior warning. BUT ... in case you missed them: do listen to "The Singing Sisters of Syracuse" performing "Chloe". Thanks again, Desdemona - you've made my evening! And my daughter is going to introduce her music teacher to the Portsmouth virtuosos tomorrow !

I must say that (so far), if forced to choose a favourite Eilert number, it would be "In The Ghetto"....there are just no words adequate to describe the way it makes me feel.....at least not in English; maybe the Swedes have a word for it?

remember back in the late 70's - 80's there was a spate of "Hooked on Classics" (and Jive Bunny)megamix recordings... lots of tunes/ songs joined by hand clapping

wellllllllllll....... the Portsmouth sinfonia did their own version.... needless to say the key and tempo changes were appalling and the hand clapping was out of time.... it was WONDERFULLY bad!!

if anyone has a recording of that, I'd love to hear it again...

Gawd, Bill D, yer right! Patsy's voice sounds great, as usual, but the arrangement really sucks--especially those back-up singers! Some songs seem to sound great no matter what musical style and tempo they're done in. I guess "Mountain Railroad" isn't one of them.

And over here in the UK, John Peel played every track from Eilerts last studio album on consecutive shows..!
Not sure what that did for the ratings
His live album was slightly disapointing, IMHO, as the band tried to follow Eilert.....Noooooo!!
