Subject: RE: BS: Y'all are gonna hate me, but..... From: Desdemona Date: 04 Mar 02 - 12:24 PM And what about Leonard Nimoy singing "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins"? Or the immortal recording of Linda McCartney's stoned &/or nauseous back-up vocals on "Hey Jude"? My ears are bleeding..... |

Or the Dead, but honestly, just about anything Jerry Garcia ever sang, speaking of bleeding ears...great great player, true feeling in everything he did, but still.... |

Subject: RE: BS: Y'all are gonna hate me, but..... From: MMario Date: 04 Mar 02 - 12:43 PM hey! Nimoy at least got one "not bad" rating. You'll note that Shatner's rating is red-lined! |
Subject: RE: BS: Y'all are gonna hate me, but..... From: Melani Date: 04 Mar 02 - 12:50 PM Wow, Des, thank you so much for that very educational link. I never realized Leonard Nimoy could sing! (By the way, who WROTE that? There should be a special Grammy for this category!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Y'all are gonna hate me, but..... From: M.Ted Date: 04 Mar 02 - 01:17 PM When I listened to "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" I began to hyperventilate--I am over it now, but am still lightheaded--the antiphonal choir is a particularly devastating effect--as are the saxes--definitely more fun than Charlotte Church! |
Subject: RE: BS: Y'all are gonna hate me, but..... From: Lonesome EJ Date: 04 Mar 02 - 01:33 PM Glenn Yarborough singing anything. Anthony Newley singing anything else. It's something about all that sincerity and all that vibrato. |
Subject: RE: BS: Y'all are gonna hate me, but..... From: sophocleese Date: 04 Mar 02 - 01:39 PM Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Des. The Portsmouth Sinfonia's performance of Also Sprach Zarathustra moved me to tears. I had never heard of the POrtsmouth Sinfonia before but NOW I will add my name to those wishing to get their albums released on CD. Anybody else who is interested can check out this for more information. |

Subject: RE: BS: Y'all are gonna hate me, but..... From: Cappuccino Date: 04 Mar 02 - 03:45 PM Desdemona, thank you, thank you, thank you... I discovered Eilart Pilaum III (to give him his full title) in Sweden some years back, and brought a cassette home with me, but lost it - and nobody ever believes me when I tell them about him. It takes a very rare talent to sing and get the timing so wrong... Thanks again. - Ian B |
Subject: RE: BS: Y'all are gonna hate me, but..... From: Desdemona Date: 04 Mar 02 - 03:59 PM I know it; I didn't know "All Shook Up" could SOUND like that....and I'll bet neither did Elvis, no matter HOW many drugs he'd taken. On the other hand, maybe he got hold of a copy and THAT'S what killed him! I especially like the tortured "uuuuuhhhhhhh" sounds so cunningly substituted for the "uh huh huh"s of the original! Definitely one of those musical treats that must be experienced to be believed....imagine having the chance to see him in concert---sigh. |

Subject: RE: BS: Y'all are gonna hate me, but..... From: RangerSteve Date: 04 Mar 02 - 07:08 PM "My Bathroom" is a classic. And Yoko Ono isn't as bad as people decribe her, simply because there aren't words in the English language to decribe how bad she is. While you're at Miserable Music, go to their links, then click on Incorrect Music. Its a web page of a radio show. They have all their past broadcasts on file. All the stuff at Miserable music and more. They are to bad songs what The Secret Museum of the Air is to great ethnic music. |

Subject: RE: BS: Y'all are gonna hate me, but..... From: Jeanie Date: 04 Mar 02 - 07:20 PM Thanks Desdemona ! I'm with Sophocleese as a new fan of the Portsmouth Sinfonia - yes, it's a difficult choice, but I agree - Also Sprach Zarathustra just has to be their very best offering, a talent of musical timing only just exceeded by the Swinging Swede. A word of caution to any Alan Rickman fans: *on no account* listen to his rendering "Intelligence" on this website. Come to think of it, remembering him singing "The sun ain't gonna shine any more" with Juliet Stevenson in "Truly, Madly, Deeply" should have been prior warning. BUT ... in case you missed them: do listen to "The Singing Sisters of Syracuse" performing "Chloe". Thanks again, Desdemona - you've made my evening! And my daughter is going to introduce her music teacher to the Portsmouth virtuosos tomorrow ! - Jeanie |

Subject: RE: BS: Y'all are gonna hate me, but..... From: Desdemona Date: 04 Mar 02 - 08:12 PM I live to serve! I must say that (so far), if forced to choose a favourite Eilert number, it would be "In The Ghetto"....there are just no words adequate to describe the way it makes me feel.....at least not in English; maybe the Swedes have a word for it? |

Subject: RE: BS: Y'all are gonna hate me, but..... From: alison Date: 05 Mar 02 - 01:34 AM remember back in the late 70's - 80's there was a spate of "Hooked on Classics" (and Jive Bunny)megamix recordings... lots of tunes/ songs joined by hand clapping wellllllllllll....... the Portsmouth sinfonia did their own version.... needless to say the key and tempo changes were appalling and the hand clapping was out of time.... it was WONDERFULLY bad!! if anyone has a recording of that, I'd love to hear it again... slainte alison |
Subject: RE: BS: Y'all are gonna hate me, but..... From: Genie Date: 05 Mar 02 - 01:47 AM Gawd, Bill D, yer right! Patsy's voice sounds great, as usual, but the arrangement really sucks--especially those back-up singers! Some songs seem to sound great no matter what musical style and tempo they're done in. I guess "Mountain Railroad" isn't one of them. Genie |

Subject: RE: BS: Y'all are gonna hate me, but..... From: Cappuccino Date: 05 Mar 02 - 05:05 PM I've just had this appalling vision of a 'hooked on Eilart Pilaum' maxi-single medley. Another brandy, quick....! - Ian B |
Subject: RE: BS: Y'all are gonna hate me, but..... From: Tony in Sweden Date: 05 Mar 02 - 05:19 PM Ian if you drop me a line I'm sure I could fix you up with a new cassette. Eilart's big here in Sverige, and he sells out his gigs believe it or not. We've even taken to playing songs at work just to put a smile back on our faces! To think, the guy actually believd he was Elvis. |
Subject: RE: BS: Y'all are gonna hate me, but..... From: Ralphie Date: 06 Mar 02 - 02:51 AM And over here in the UK, John Peel played every track from Eilerts last studio album on consecutive shows..! Not sure what that did for the ratings His live album was slightly disapointing, IMHO, as the band tried to follow Eilert.....Noooooo!! Great site though..Regards Ralphie |
